 6. Succubus, Alv and the Beast Lord

「Thank you for accompanying me today. I will be in your care, Lilu, Betty.」

「Just leave everything to me.」

As Mio was lowering her head to express her gratitude, Betty, one of Ellen’s men, gave her a thumbs up.

「You’re way too serious, Mio.」

It became a sort of a routine thing. Together with Lilu and someone else, typically one of Ellen’s subordinates, Mio was making her way to the upper layers of the labyrinth to care for her demonic beasts. It happened once or twice every month.

「Not at all. I’m sorry for making you go all this way with me.」

「And I’m telling you that you don’t have to worry about it as patrolling the labyrinth is also a part of my job.」

Such interactions were practically a norm now.

「Well then, let us go, my cute babies need me!」

Mio got fired up and raised her fist into the air, while Lilu and Betty followed after her.

Currently Aur’s labyrinth was divided into four floors. The lower ones were occupied by Aur himself, while the upper ones were kept as a space for the upbringing of various demonic beasts.

They were heading towards the second floor. It was a wide, open space where monsters roamed freely and adventurers often came to hunt them. It was a dangerous place for Mio to go alone, that’s why she always travelled there with an escort.

Lilu was not that strong, but her magic was enough to keep the monsters that tried to approach them at bay. Yes, some of the beasts that prioritized survival tried to attack them. After all, a hungry beasts is a hundred times more dangerous than a beast with its belly full of prey.

It was roughly the same with the adventurers who came here to hunt. Usually they were not a threat, and when someone strong happened to be among them, Ellen or her men were more than enough to dispatch them quickly. Poor souls could run, or resist. Try and take a wild guess at who had bigger chances of survival.

「IT’S THE BEAST LORD!!!!!!!」

「RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!!!!」

The adventurers who came into the dungeon today began to run away as soon as they saw Mio’s face. For one reason or another (she wouldn’t tell what reason) she seemed to have a bit of a… notoriety among adventurers.
They even came with that {Beast Lord} nickname. By the way, before she was known as {Deadly Golden Braids}.

「Hey, that was mean and uncalled for!」

「Really? I think it suits you just fine. And it sounds so cool, Beast Lord. I want a cool nickname like that.」

Betty laughed at Mio who dropped her shoulder with a dejected sigh.

「Stop fooling around, you two. We’re almost there.」

Lilu interrupted their laid-back mood. She was always accompanying Mio not only because she was a demon, but also because she knew the directions better than anyone else. She was the only one beside Aur who knew every layer of the dungeon like the back of their hand.

「Heads up, we’re here.」

It was an area with a giant hole in the ground. Upon closer inspection, it was actually a steep slope, which was used by monsters born on the lower levels of the labyrinth to climb up to the upper levels.

And around that hole were demonic beasts who leisurely were eating the grass growing from the ground rich in minerals.

「Wow, they’re bigger than I thought.」

A voice slipped out of Betty’s mouth.

Demonic beasts here were similar to animals, cows, to be exact.
Two sharp horns were growing out of their heads on thick necks, and a sturdy-looking hooved legs supported their bulky bodies. They were, however, much bigger than bulls, and probably way heavier. And their skin was as hard as steel.

「If I recall correctly, they were called gorgons… Mio for the love of f*ck where do you think you’re going?!」

「To do my best, of course!」

She furrowed her eyebrows and nodded.

When she approached one of the beasts, she was only reaching as high as its knees.

「Hello there, Mr. Beastie! Would you have a moment to talk about…」

When Mio called out to the gorgon, it slowly turned its head towards her. Looking at it from up close, it was intimidating like a mountain.

「Eh, no way, what the…」

Betty rushed to Mio’s side and pulled her back as she entered a staring contest with the beast. Seeing them run, it roared loudly and rushed straight at them.

「He doesn’t seem to be the talkative type.」

Betty tossed Mio to the side, took out her bow and prepared herself to dodge.」

「Please wait!」

The arrow was released at the Gorgon faster than Mio could scream.

「Ugh, so hard!」

Betty was surprised. She had no idea that there were creatures, beside Aur of course, that could survive being shot by an arrow released from her bow.

「How do we even run away from it?!」

Lilu asked while she floated in the air thanks to her wings.

「We won’t! I’ll persuade it to stop chasing us!」

Mio left Betty’s side and approached the Gorgon with open arms, while the beast in question was threateningly scratching the ground with its hoove.

「It’s all right.」

Mio got so close to it that she could clearly see the grey breath escaping from Gorgon’s mouth as it breathed.
When she reached her hand towards it, one of her fingertips started to turn into stone with an ominous cracking sound.

「Mio….」

「It’s fine.」

Betty tried to come to her aid, but was stopped by Mio’s words.

Her voice was quiet, and void of any ill intentions, charming even.

「It’s alright, we don’t want to hurt you.」

More and more of Mio’s body turned into stone as she stared right into Gorgon’s eyes.

「I just want to be friends with you.」

The Gordon also looked her in the eyes. And as it did, the grey breath disappeared completely as it got closer to Mio and licked her face with its long, purple tongue.

「Um, is it…. Safe now?」

Betty asked, perplexed by the bizarre sight in front of her.

「Oh yeah, it’s fine now. This girl here was just scared of us, that’s all.」

「Scared, huh?」

So it chased after them, survived an arrow to the head and wanted to turn them all to stone just because it was scared? Damn nature, you scary.

Lilu was amazed, but slowly descended next to Mio.

「So, how long are you going to be stone cold, Mio?」

「Yeah… about that…」

As a result of this whole situation, everything but Mio’s head was turned into stone.

「Apparently, he can turn things into stone, but doesn’t know how to change them back.」

Lilu sighted greatly. In other words, Mio was in serious trouble.

「We can’t be having our monster tamer being all stony like that. Betty, cure her.」

「Huh? Why don’t you do it? You’re better at magic anyway.」

「Well duh, demons can’t use holy magic, remember?」

Lilu and Betty stared at each other in silence.

「If it’s such a problem, then maybe I should just stay that way? I think I could be a great talking statue.」

「No no, there’s no need for that. Although I kind of want to see that.」

And then everyone laughed at the sheer absurdity of the situation.

Later, after the Gorgon situation and Mio unpetrified, all three of them were given an earful by Aur, but that is a story for another time.
