CHAPTER 26: A REQUEST FROM THE HERO PART 1

「WHA!?」

I don’t know what he was going to ask of me to do, but……

I decided to cut him off before he could even begin to give me any details.

It seems that he wasn’t quite expecting me to turn him down on the spot like that, for Arios’s expression was completely stupefied.

But it also seemed that he somehow managed to keep his anger in check this time around.

With his temples twitching like crazy, he only managed to make some inaudible noises for a moment. But then……

「H…… Hey, hey! Aren’t you even going to listen to what I have to say to you!? How horrible is that!? We’re on the same side, aren’t we? Aren’t we friends!?」

「We used to be comrades. That’s right. But we no longer are.」

「Now, stop saying such harsh things. I already told you, didn’t I……? We might have had our fair share of misunderstandings and differences, but I…… No, we still think of you as a valued comrade, Rein.」

「I see. But sadly, that’s no longer the case for me.」

「……Huh?」

「This might sound rude and harsh to you, but I no longer care about you guys. Like, at all. Right now, to me you are like some random stones lying on the side of the road — hardly something that I need to concern myself with. In that same fashion, I couldn’t care less about where you are going to go from now on or what you are going to do. So, can I ask you to leave us alone already?」

「Gugihh…… Y-You…… You little……」

「Arios, please calm down. If we don’t manage to butter him up here to join us once more, we are as good as finished……」

Mina was trying to do her best to calm Arios down, but……

You do realize that we can hear you loud and clear, right?

Are they doing it on purpose, by any chance? Or is it by a complete accident?

I knew it, they really are looking to pick a fight, but they go about it in a horribly roundabout way.

Seeing them acting like that, there is no way that I could possibly take them seriously.

「Ghyiih…… I-I understand that you have every right to feel angry at us. After all, we ended up doing something horrible to you. That much is true. S-So for that…… I apologize. From the bottom of my heart. Just like this.」

Arios then bowed down his head with a sense of reluctance to his every single move.

「Okay, I see. So what?」

「Huh?」

「No matter what you say, my answer still remains the same. Now then, would you kindly get out of our way? We want to go back to town already.」

「Y-You bastard……! Even though I, being the great Hero that I am, had done so much for a nobody like you…… For a mere Beast Tamer to talk back to me in such a vulgar manner……!!」

Even though it was not my intention in the slightest, apparently my words only ended up agitating Arios further.

I’m not going to lie and say that I already thought of the entire Hero Party and them kicking me out business to be well behind me, but……

Maybe somewhere deep down inside of my heart, I was still holding some sort of resentment towards them. Yes, that had to be it.

It must have been all that pent up resentment and irritation that caused me to lash out so harshly at Arios and the others.

「…… Rein-san. I would like to implore you to help us as well. This is what we need to do in order to save the world.」

Mina’s sudden words stopped me in my tracks as we were about to walk away.

「What does that supposed to mean?」

「Would you mind lending us your strength once more so that we can conquer the Lost Forest?」

「…… For the time being, can you at least tell me what’s going on?」

If you say it’s for the sake of saving the world, it’s indeed something that is impossible for me to simply ignore.

For now, I decided to listen to Mina’s story.

「…… Hm, I see how it is now.」

So, apparently Arios and his group are really struggling with capturing the Lost Forest for a while now.

And it is because of that struggle of theirs that they wanted to enlist my help once more.

After listening to Mina’s story, I understood the general situation that they were in.

And then…….. I was honestly quite dumbfounded.

How could they even do this? First they kick me out of the Party for being useless, and then they want to take me back the first moment that they happen to come at the bump on their road?

Don’t these people know the meaning of the word ‘shame’? Or could it be that they had none to begin with?

I was honestly too stunned to even say anything here.

「….. That being said.」

Even though he might be like this, Arios is still a Hero, for better or worse.

His duty is to defeat the Demon Lord. And if he does not succeed in doing that, the entire world is going to be in trouble.

But be that as it may, even if the Demon Lord is not defeated and the world is overrun with various monsters and demons, I’m confident that I could still be able to at least do something about it.

It’s because I have two reliable comrades by my side, Kanade and Tanya, that I am able to say something like that with utmost confidence.

With the two of them at my side, I felt like I could do literally anything.

But what about the others?

What about the people in the cities? What about the people who live their normal lives?

The Demon Lord is a great threat to those who are powerless and ordinary.

As long as the Demon Lord is not defeated, they won’t be able to live their lives in peace.

It’s not a desirable thing for everyone that the journey to defeat the Demon Lord be interrupted or brought to a hold.

Maybe I really need to think about this entire thing from more than just my own personal feelings and perspective.

It’s really annoying and it really rubs me the wrong way, but……

If the journey of Arios and the others is stalled, then maybe it is just something that cannot be helped for me to just lend them my aid one last time.

It’s just like I thought to myself over and over again. I cannot allow for a tragedy like the one from my past to occur in this world again.

「…… Alright, I understand. I am going to help you guys out one more time.」

「Really? Are you sure? No, thank you very much.」

「Tch…… Acting all pompous as if you’re some hot shit or something like that…… Why is someone as great as myself relying on someone as useless as you……?」
