CHAPTER 163: FAREWELL PART 1

Just like that, we were granted an exception from the Strike Team by Stella, and we could continue our activities as the Investigation Team for a little while longer.

But that doesn’t mean that the Strike Team will wait for us to finish our business. No, they were dead set on bringing Iris down as soon as possible.

They were armed to the teeth and ready to go, so I’m afraid that when Iris finally shows up in here again……

…… When Iris shows up again, they will be waiting for her and they will rush her without a moment’s hesitation.

And no no matter just how powerful Iris really is, it would be extremely difficult for even someone like her to take on such a large number of both Adventurers and Knights all at once.

Now, although Iris certainly has the power equal to a one-man army, it is also true that both her stamina and magical power are limited.

After the meeting was officially over, we left the Strike Team’s Headquarters tent right away……

We were about to go back to the inn where everyone was waiting for our return and further instructions, when Ax called out to me and stopped us in our tracks.

Well, I mean…… It was only a given that he wouldn’t just leave things like that without saying something. That’s just how Ax was. He would never let this go.

I hadn’t told Ax and Cell anything about Iris’s past, as a matter of course.

I just stopped and turned around to face both Ax and Cell.

「What was that just now? Did you really mean what you said in the meeting just now?」

「You mean, about finding a way to seal Iris away for good?」

「Yeah, that’s it. Are you really serious about that?」

「Yes, I’m serious.」

「But why?」

Ax gave me a really grim and confused look.

「She the Devil, you know!? She destroyed an entire village and killed a lot of people there, too! If she is allowed to live, a tragedy like that at the Pagos village is sure to happen again! The same kind of grief will be spread throughout the land indefinitely! Is that really what you want!? Answer me, Rein!」

I didn’t actually know that Ax might have had such serious thoughts on this matter.

And the way in which he was speaking right now was also really violent and emotional.

But it was then that Cell interrupted Ax in her usual fashion.

「Calm down, Ax.」

「But Cell!」

「Just try to calm yourself down for a moment, okay? Because unless you calm yourself down, there is just no way for us to be able to discuss this matter in a productive way. First of all, we need to hear what’s going on with Rein and the others, to hear their reasoning behind their actions…… Wouldn’t you agree?」

「…… Alright, I understand.」

Ax then finally calmed down a little bit, but there was still a look of reluctance visible on his face at the current moment.

So instead of letting him do the talking, Cell turned her calm and composed eyes towards me.

「First of all, let me say this: I understand what you are thinking here, Rein. I might not be entirely convinced if it is the best thing to do in this situation…… But at the very least, I understand you.」

「I see, thanks.」

「But then again, why did you come up with an idea like that? and why now, of all times? The higher ups have made the decision that we should no longer think about sealing the Devil away, and that we need to defeat it instead. Besides, it’s perfectly normal to think that they can’t just let an entity like that roam free around the world and allow her to do whatever it is that pleases her, wouldn’t you agree? And yet, knowing all that fully well, you still push for us to actually try and seal her away for good. Why is that, Rein? Can’t you at least explain that part of your reasoning to us?」

「T-This is……」

「Could it be that there is some sort of reason as to why you can’t tell us what is going on?」

Up until now I managed to get by without actually telling those two anything that related to Iris, but……

I can see that being all secretive about it is only going to get me so far.

Now the real question is: just how are those two going to react?

I mean, their response is already kind of predictable to me, but still……

I steeled myself and decided to tell them everything that Iris told me last night.

「Actually, you see……」

So I told them about Iris’s past.

I told them about the source of Iris’s hatred.

I have told them all of that……

And then I told them my own, personal thoughts on that matter.

I told them that I don’t want to kill Iris, but at the same time that she cannot be allowed to roam free and do whatever she wants.

I told them that we were going to stop Iris, and for that end we would try to research the matter of sealing her away one last time.

I also told them that in this way, it would be my own unique way of saving Iris from herself.

I told them everything that we knew and everything that I have thought on that matter, and then even some more, without hiding anything or holding anything back.

「Hmm, I see.」

Cell was able to calmly listen to what I had to say and accept everything after analyzing it inside of her head for a few moments.

But Ax, on the other hand……

「You bastard…… Are you actually feeling for for her!? She’s our enemy, for crying out loud!」

He took it really badly, and looked to be extremely angry.

Ax was angry at me for being touched by Iris’s emotions and being tinted with their colors. But to him, it surely must have looked as if Iris managed to get inside of my head and catch me in her grasp.

I have never seen him make such an angry and furious face before.

I could tell that he was seriously pissed off by my story just now. And he was not going to have it with any of our potential explanations and excuses.

「It’s the Devil that we are talking about here! She is the monster that killed a bunch of people! She destroyed the entire village! Do you really think that it;s okay for someone, for anyone to do that!? Just because they happened to be through a lot in the past!? Just because a whole lot of shitty things happened to them!?」
