CHAPTER 215: B RANK PART 1

On a certain day, I was called to the Adventurers’ Guild by Natalie-san.

And since it would be boring to go there on my own, I decided to take Tanya with me for some company.

We walked through the city while going shoulder to shoulder……

「…… Say, Tanya?」

「What is it?」

「Aren’t you taking your distance from me today for some reason?」

Truth to be told, there was more than enough space in between Tanya and I to fit an additional person with even some space left to spare.

Normally, we would walk so close to one another that our shoulders would be bumping into each other……

「A-Are you sure that you are not imagining stuff?」

「No, I don’t really think so, but……」

「I-It’s not like I am suddenly feeling embarrassed to be walking side by side with you, or that I have become self-conscious about it, or anything like that! Y-Yeah, that’s definitely not what this is all about, okay!? So don’t get any weird ideas about it, okay!?」

There are times when I find it really hard to understand what exactly Tanya is saying.

For some reason, her cheeks were flushed red, and Tanya herself looked really agitated and flustered.

Her tail was also swaying restlessly from side to side.

Could it be that she was…… embarrassed, perhaps?

We spend time together all the time, so I have kind of come to understand Tanya’s emotions a little bit.

However, what I simply couldn’t figure out here was the exact reason as to why Tanya would feel embarrassed in this exact situation.

I didn’t do anything to cause her to be embarrassed, did I?

「H-Hey, Rein, what are you…… P-Please don’t stare at me like that!」
「Huh? You mean, I can’t look at you anymore?」

「W-Well, duh! I mean, it’s a sign of bad manners to stare! Not to mention staring at women so openly like that!」

I mean, when you put it like that, I guess that’s actually true.

「I’m sorry. It’s just that, you have been acting kind of strange today, Tanya, so I have become worried that you might not be feeling well.」

But judging from her reactions, there must have been nothing wrong with Tanya, so it was probably only my imagination.

Besides, if I worry about her more than necessary, she might get angry and annoyed with me.

「N-No, it’s just that…… Look, it’s okay. Just because I told you to stop staring at me, you don;t have to take your eyes off of me right away…… I-It’s not that I really care or anything like that, so if you want to look at me some more, you can do that……」

Since Tanya was mumbling something to herself right now, I decided to stop right beside her.

「N-Nothing! It’s nothing!」

「Oh, is that so? Well then, come on, let’s get going. At this pace, we will arrive at the Adventurers’ Guild around noon or even later.」

「G-Geez…… I really wish that you would stop worrying about things like that and be more aware of your own surroundings, Rein.」

「Hm? What do you mean by that?」

「How about you try to figure that one out on your own for a change, huh?」

And now, for some reason Tanya got angry at me……

Women’s behavior can be so unreasonable from time to time……

When I arrived at the Adventurers’ Guild, I was greeted by Natalie-san who congratulated me with a beaming smile on her lips.

And even though she just happened to congratulate me out of the blue, I had no idea what that could possibly be all about.

Or rather, I seem to remember that this exact situation already happened in the past? Was that becoming some sort of a pattern in my particular case?

「I am pleased to announce that with your recent accomplishments taken into account, your Adventurer’s Rank has been promoted to B Rank, Shroud-san!」

「Huh? B Rank?」

「Yes, that’s right. Shroud-san has solved a lot of big cases in recent weeks, all with magnificent results and in a quick succession.」

Natalie-san said, sounding really proud and happy about the matter.

「First of all, there was the case of the Devil that destroyed the Pagos village.」

「That was……」

I did not fulfill this request with the goal of beating Iris in my mind.

I just wanted to save her. So you could say that the “defeat” of the Devil was the unwanted result, something that happened because I lacked the strength to see things through to the end.

But I guess that other people did not see it that way.

And because of that it was decided that I played the greatest part in Iris’s defeat.

「But, I have come to antagonize all other Adventurers that were dispatched to defeat the Devil……」

「Hasn’t that matter already been properly explained and resolved? Shroud-san realized the trap set by the Devil. Deciding that there was no time to explain things to others, you stopped the others from going right into it, even if it meant having to fight them. I shudder to think what would have happened to the entirety of the Strike Team had they rushed head-first into those ruins……」

「Well, I guess that’s one way in which you can look at it, but……」

But in reality, it was something that I have decided on my own.

The circumstances at that time just so happened to mesh together exquisitely and it was something that I decided on the spot at the time.

「And then there was the case of the Dragon attack just the other day. Thanks to Shroud-san, we were able to solve the incident without causing any serious damage to the city and its people. Oh, of course, it’s also thanks to Tanya-san here. All of us in the Adventurers’ Guild would like to thank you for putting your lives on the line to save the city and its people.」

「I mean…… It was not that we did that so that the city could be indebted to us, right? So there’s no need for anyone to be grateful to us.」

Being praised so openly like that, Tanya was clearly feeling embarrassed.

「It goes without saying, but both of those achievements are something that you can be proud of. Therefore, we, the Adventurers’ Guild, have decided to promote Shroud-san to the B Rank effective immediately. Once again, congratulations!」

「Oh my, what’s this reaction? Shouldn’t you feel happy about that, Shroud-san. It’s the B Rank that we are talking about here, B Rank. Since you are now becoming a high-ranking Adventurer, you will be able to take on even more requests and receive various benefits from them. For example, you are now free from paying bridge tolls when you need to use them.」

「W-Well, now that you mention all that, it certainly DOES make me happy, but……」

Honestly, I had some mixed feelings about this entire situation.

Aside from the Dragon attack……

The Iris case didn’t get the result I wanted it to get.
