CHAPTER 240: THE FALSE ACCUSATION PART 1

「Whoa there!? Are you out of your freaking minds here!?」

「Yeah! This is stupid! There is no way in hell that Rein would ever do something like that!」

Tanya and Kanade were the first ones to refute Arios’s ridiculous accusations.

They were both really pissed off at being told something so unkind and outrageous, and were not shy to show some clear anger and open hostility towards Arios.

They looked like they were going to start throwing hands with him any moment now.

However, Arios did not seem to be the least bit intimidated by this show of hostility.

He continued to stand tall, looking so cocky and arrogant, as if he was sure that justice was on his side.

「After conducting a rigorous investigation just now, the answer that the investigators arrived at was that Rein is the only one who could have done it. Therefore, he is the culprit in this case.」

The rest of the examiners surrounded us at once, as if they were obeying Arios’s every single word.

They were already treating us like criminals and giving me the nastiest glares imaginable.

As for Cell and Axe, they did not join the siege with everyone else, and were just watching the situation in disbelief from the sides.

「Why would Rein want to kill some other Adventurers? He has no reason to do this, nothing to benefit from by doing this…… So why would someone with no motive be considered a culprit!?」

Sora said in a stern voice, sounding pretty much like a lawyer there.

However, Arios seems to have anticipated those questions to be asked even before they left Sora’s mouth, as he turned towards her to answer her almost right away without slurring and stagnating.

「The victims here happen to be the Adventurers who had a problem with Rein not so long ago, you know. So the assumption here is that Rein killed them in order to make up for his resentment towards them from that time. There is also another hypothesis here that they might have had a run-in with Rein in the ruins they met in the ruins and got into some sort of trouble once again. So he most probably lost his temper and then moved in for the kill……? Either way, there was most certainly a motive to be had here.」

「Sounds to me like there is a truly tantamount amount of assumptions that you are working with here?」

「Maybe so. But it is the truth that the other participants have no contact with the victims at all throughout the duration of the final test. The only person they had contact with was Rein.」

「Hmph! For you to treat Rein like a criminal based solely on assumptions and with a lack of concrete evidence…… Don’t make me laugh!」

「Of course, we did not decide that Rein was the culprit here based on that reason alone. That would be the epitome of foolishness. You there, show them the other evidence that we have.」

At Arios’ signal, one of the examiners brought forth the supposed materials serving as evidence.

That examiner started to distribute it to everyone else in the room, myself included.

「This document describes in great detail the type of wounds that the bodies of the victims had suffered prior to their deaths. I guess that you might as well call it an autopsy report.」

「Oaky, but what about it?」

「I would like you to have a look at the section titled “The Cause of Death”.」

「…… It says that the cause of death is most likely blood loss caused by knife or dagger-inflicted wounds. What about it?」

「Now I want you to take a closer look at that section. Doesn’t it say that those guys died from a stab wound caused by a dagger or a knife, not a sword……?」

「Muh……」

「It just so happens that no one else from the participants of the final test uses a knife or dagger but Rein. Rein utilizes a dagger as his main armament, while everyone else uses swords, spears, axes, and so on and so forth……

「And you’re saying that this is the basis of your accusation!?」

「I’m just stating the facts here. If you would like that, we can do a thorough physical examination of everyone else here.　I can assure you that no one other than Rein will come out with possession of a dagger or a knife, so we might as well not even bother with that.」

「Daggers are so compact and handy, it’s easy to dispose of one of those if need be! Like burying it in the ground or throwing it into the river…… That’s hardly any proof!」

Luna pointed her finger at Arios in an accusatory manner and shouted that the evidence presented here was not enough to formulate a sound accusation.

And Luna was right in doing that.

If they were to arrest me just on the basis of what Arios just said, that would be way too arrogant and way too selfish.

It would be something that could only be described as being completely ridiculous, and something that many people would find to be utterly unacceptable.

However, no matter what we were saying in my defense, Arios did not seem to lose his relaxed expression and his confidence.

He seems to be absolutely convinced that I was actually the one who did it.

「When and at what point in time Master Rein presumably did this?」

This time around it was Tina who came forth with her question.

「I have heard that you guys fell into one of the traps in the ruins and got separated as a result? And that as a result of that separation, Rein ended up being all on his own? So there is no one here who can actually guarantee Rein’s actions during the time that he was all alone. Which means that he could have committed the crime then, unsupervised by anyone.」

「T-This is……」

What did I do when I was separated from everyone else during the time of the final test?

Wasn’t that timeframe the best possible moment for me to actually commit that crime?

I couldn’t actually blame everyone else for suspecting me because of that, but at the same time……

If we were to assume me being guilty only on something so fickle as that, there would be no end to all kinds of speculations as to what could have happened.

Proving my innocence at that particular moment in time was going to be incredibly difficult, if not even nigh impossible to do.

「Umm…… Excuse me, but can I say something here?」

It was at this moment that Axe interrupted the conversation, as if he couldn’t bear to watch this show unfold any longer.

「After he was separated from his teammates, Rain was together with me for the majority of his time in the ruins.」

「Hmm, I see. Are you absolutely certain of that fact?」

「Yeah, I’m sure of it. So if you want to arrest Rein and he is willing to go to trial with this, I am willing to testify to prove his innocence.」
