Return of the Fallen Volume 11 Chapter 47

The three traveled down the broken stairs and found themselves in the junk room. Now, however, the room was completely empty for miles upon miles. Marty looked around and was at a loss.

“Jentson, what happened to all of the relics and ancient tech!? Don’t tell me…it’s gone.”

“No need to be worried. I have all of it inside my storage ring. Arc can open it and take out and store whatever I need. I thought maybe I could figure something out about the soul mark inside but one thing happened after another and there wasn’t much time to inspect anything too closely.”

Marty was already surprised that Arc could access Kazuki’s ring but thinking about it further it made sense. Arc was an artifact and artifacts were beyond mysterious. At the same time, she became excited as Kazuki had just mentioned something she had never heard of.

“Soul mark…The tech has a soul mark inside of it!?”

“Yes. You mean you didn’t know?”

Marty shook her head.

“How would I?”

“I just thought you being a Demigod, your senses should be incredible right?”

“Just how great do ya think we Demigods are? First off, a being that can leave a soul mark should at least be a God. How would a Demigod be able to see through a God’s power? It simply ain’t happening. Ya mean to tell me you are actually capable of sensing a soul mark left behind by a God?”

Kazuki denied it.

“No, Arc told me about it.”

Kazuki found her words to be wrong. Back on Gordonia, it was not a God that left a soul mark on Glacious’s soul but a mere Titan instead. Not only that but Kazuki could see that soul mark back when he was much much weaker and did not have the soul reading ability.

(How could a Titan do something a God can?)

Arc sparked up a bit.

(Kazuki where do you think these abilities come from? They all have an origin somewhere. I’m not saying that particular Titan came up with that ability but it’s possible to learn things that others cannot and do things others simply can’t even imagine. At the same time, was that soul mark that amazing? In the end, it was easily destroyed by Glacious using the sword forms Kai himself created. A human technique was able to destroy a Titan technique. Sometimes it’s not about power rather it’s about understanding a fraction of the universe. Kai’s technique took into account a small part of the universe and he found a way to sever the connection of energies. Brilliant.)

Arc went quiet for a moment before he added.

(By the way, why lie to her about such a small thing? I told you exactly how to sense the soul mark inside. I thought you trusted this woman.)

(I do trust her but that does not mean everything needs to be out in the open. More like, the more I tell her, the worse position she may be put in if someone discovers what she knows. I’m not saying anything will happen to her but you never know what the future holds. It’s better to tell her as little as possible just in case the information is stolen. After all, she may be able to defend her soul from other Demigods but to resist a full-on God, no chance.)

(So you think a God is what, going to come down and from out of nowhere steal what’s in her soul? What are the odds of that, astronomical I would figure.)

(Doesn’t matter. With what she knows right now, she still remains in the dark for the most part. I’m not trying to risk either of our well beings even if the chances are slim. That’s why I didn’t tell her about my devouring ability. As far as I can tell, this ability is extremely rare and the only known source of such a power comes from the Vazuls and the one they worshipped, the fallen Ourodyess. Besides those beings, I and Orberus are the only others with such a power. Finding out such a thing could easily be disastrous. It’s only smart to not reveal too much.)

(Hmm, true enough.)

“Jentson, do ya think I could see some of that stuff? I would love to study it more closely.”

“I don’t mind, after all, it’s useless to me but for now we should continue heading deeper down. We need to get to the core and I don’t know what obstacles may delay us. Aka, we need to hurry.”

Marty tilted her head a bit.

“Do ya really think anything will block our path? Now that we are using ki to disguise our souls and you’ve thought of a way to get around the sandworms, what else can stop us? Even if something does get in our way, I can simply put the tech away, and once that problem is resolved I can take it back out and observe it along the way.”

Marty stared at Kazuki as if she was insane. Her eyes were wide and she kept asking him over and over. Kazuki shrugged. It didn’t matter that much and would not get in the way or slow them down.

(Arc, can you take out a random piece of crap for her? Otherwise, I can see a future headache coming along.)

Kazuki held out his hand and half a second later a triangle-shaped object appeared in his hand. The piece had round edges and a raised center. With a toss, Marty snatched it out of the sky, and with a bright smile, she hugged Kazuki. As soon as she hugged him she jumped back before punching him in his arm.

Kazuki gave her an odd look and she chuckled.

“What?”

Kazuki rubbed his arm.

“Nothing, I just don’t know if your a lady or a kid the way you act sometimes.”

*Heh*

“That’s a part of my charm. Sometimes I’m mature and elegant, other times I’m energetic and youthful.”

Kazuki raised a brow and sarcastically said.

“Sure. Let’s go with that.”

These words of his didn’t even register with her and went in one ear and out the other as she was already obsessing over the weird-shaped object. Marty stared at it in absolute silence as if she had discovered something and Kazuki became curious.

“Can you sense the soul mark by any chance?”

Kazuki thought maybe she figured out how. Since he could sense, he wondered if he could teach her how but he quickly gave that thought up.

(A major part of sensing it for me is my soul reading ability. It makes me hyper-sensitive to not only soul energy but energies in general.)

Marty snapped out of it.

“No. As I said, a Demigod such as myself can not even begin to sense a Gods power. Only if they purposefully allow their power to be felt or discovered would one be made aware of it. No the reason why I paused is because of this piece of ancient tech. It feels…familiar but I can’t place it.”

Kazuki was about to ask her more about that but before he could, the ground trembled and quaked. The shaking grew heavier and more chaotic as Arc called out.

“Kazuki, there’s a stampede coming!”

Kazuki and Marty exchanged a look before heading back for the stairs. Before they made it though, several Sandworms burst through the walls and collapsed the stairs completely. Their retreat was now impossible. The two came to a complete standstill as these worms began to move oddly. They ignored Kazuki and Marty and instead began to thrash around as if they had gone mad.

“Jentson, something’s wrong their not even bothering with us.”

Her words were true as even though she spoke and made noise, the sandworms continued to ignore them. At this time, the worms became even wilder and began whipping their tails and slamming their bodies all around. The ground cracked and exploded open here and there and the pair were nearly hit multiple times. Behind them, several more worms appeared from multiple tunnels.

Marty pointed up and shouted.

“THE PILLARS!”

The two rushed between the raging monsters, dodging and weaving before they jumped upward, and with strength in their hands, they gripped the pillars and began climbing up as high as possible. Some of these pillars went up for miles while some only went up several hundred feet. Just as they seemed at a safe distance, and things seemed as if they were going to calm down, Arc shouted once more.

“IT’S HERE! HANG ON TO SOMETHING!”

Arc’s words were barely finished when thousands of sandworms came rushing through. The ground trembled nonstop and these worms slammed and whipped one another, knocking and crawling over any and all in their path. Their bodies slammed heavily into many pillars and the pillars shattered. Kazuki and Marty recognized immediately that they may have made a mistake and as if to ring true, the pillars they held onto suddenly were hit with an explosive force.
