Return of the Fallen Volume 11 Chapter 76

Three weeks later, Kazuki and Marty caught a glimpse of a city in the distance.

Samuel came out from his cabin and looked at the two of them.

“We’re nearly there, are you two ready?”

Marty pointed at herself with her thumb.

“Me, I was born ready. I don’t know about old young Jentson here, hehe”

Kazuki nodded.

“As long as they’re not a God, we should be able to deal with whatever threat that springs up.”

Samuel felt reassured and smiled.

“Good. Gauldriss is just up ahead. Remember, although this city has its own rules and laws, there are always those who will seek darkness and will bring unnecessary trouble. Seeing me, a wealthy type, and only one guard that is a demigod, people will try and cause trouble just to test the waters. In order to sift out most of the rouges with ill thoughts toward me, it will be necessary to make a statement of sorts.”

Marty raised a brow.

“A statement?”

Kazuki understood what the boy meant and closed a fist and showed it to Marty.

“This kind of statement.”

“Oh, I knew that hehe. Let someone try and test us. They’ll be in for a terrifying truth.”

“Just remember that you aren’t allowed to kill anyone within the city, that is unless they have attempted to kill you or if you are fighting them officially inside the arena. Outside of that, killing will get you thrown into one of the prison worlds or worse.”

“Worse than a prison world?”

Samuel nodded.

“Sir Jentson. If one commits something truly horrendous and you are caught, the leaders of the factions can decide whether or not to send you to one of the Hell Realms. From what father says, any of the Hell Realms is eternal torture. Where pain is only just the beginning. It is a place from which there is absolutely no return. One is better off simply killing themselves and scattering their own soul rather than being thrown into one of the Hell Realms. Just stick to the plan and we won’t have to worry about such things. As far as I know, sending someone to one of the 7 Hell Realms is incredibly rare.”

Kazuki smiled.

“No need to worry. I’ll deal with the enemies without killing.”

Marty punched Kazuki in the arm.

“We’ll deal with the enemies.”

After a few moments, with a thought, Samuel began to slow his ship down until they arrived a few miles outside of the city. Even from several miles, the size of this city was enormous. Walls of silver and white stretched up for miles. Kazuki did not know why a city full of Gods would need walls so high but this question was answered almost instantly.

As soon as their ship stopped a flock of weird birds zoomed past them. These birds were the size of hills and they had scales coating their flesh with red and yellow feathers. This flock of giant lizard-like birds raced across the sky at a speed nearly as fast as Kazuki which surprised him.

These birds arrived at the wall seemingly instantly. All at once, they opened their large ugly beaks, and pillars of white flames came flying out with a roar.

All of the crew on deck fell to their knees and held their ears in pain. Before it affected Samuel though, Kazuki and Marty had already protected him with their auras which was overkill. After half a second, they also protected the crew, and the crew was relieved of their pain and were thankful.

“What type of beast are they?”

“Those are Speczans. They are very quick and have high attack power. Their defense though is quite weak.”

The beasts fired their white flames at the city walls and the walls took no damage whatsoever. This did make them seem weak but Kazuki could sense the power behind the attack from here and knew they could easily kill a 6th stage being.

All of these flames that had crashed into the wall vanished and half a second later, lighting shot out of the city wall from hundreds of seemingly random spots. The Speczans roared as they dodged. All of them moved away quickly except one. It was hit by the lightning and its scales seemed to amplify the lightning causing it even greater harm.

The moment it was zapped, it turned black all over before falling out of the sky and crashing onto the ground below. It was dad just like that. Kazuki was a little surprised because the power of the lightning that came from the wall was no stronger than something a 5th stage being would display.

“Was that it? That lightning was so…weak.”

Samuel shook his head.

“That was all that was needed. I told you those creatures have weak defenses, especially against lightning. These walls though have only shown a fraction of what they can do. There are many beasts and monsters in the Higher Realms, plenty are equal to Gods in both power and strength. Walls like these can withstand several attacks from such beings and can even counter for a short time. These walls are powered by several Gods within the city and can handle most things. These walls are incredibly tough believe me.”

Kazuki was about to send out his aura and inspect the wall. After all, a tool that could channel not one but several God’s powers was something of interest to him. However the moment he was about to check it out Arc called out to him in a hurry.

(STOP! Don’t even try it Kazuki.)

(What!? What is it!?)

(Those walls are monitored by Gods. The moment you try and take a peek they will know and look into you. I cannot currently block a God’s power, let alone several of them at the same time. You dot hat and everyone will know your identity in an instant.)

(What, How am I supposed to walk around in a city of Gods and not have my soul looked at? Won’t they all know the moment they get curious about me?)

(No, this and that are different. That uses multiple Gods as a source of power so it would draw multiple attention to you all at once. As long as just one takes a curious glance, I can deal with it but if they look for too long, they will see through you. So long as you don’t do too much to stand out, a God would have no interest in a 7th stager’s soul like yours. Just don’t go around poking your nose into places it clearly doesn’t belong.)

Kazuki nodded.

(Good to know.)

Kazuki hadn’t even taken a single step into the city and he had already made a fatal mistake. The pressure was on.

Samuel landed the ship on the ground and there was a line of people coming and going. People that left the city would wait until they reached a certain distance before they opened their rings and put their Vajra ships into the sky. At the same time, Kazuki noticed no ships flying in the sky near the city.

“We can’t fly our ships in the city?”

Marty nodded.

“Yep. Those in power do not wish for anything unexpected. I heard once that someone flew a rare Vajra ship into a certain city. It broke past the defenses of that city and killed a few Gods before it was finally stopped. After that, a rule was made in every city whether they be big or small. No ships are allowed to fly in or over a city or near a city. If we came close in Samuel’s ship, the walls would have attacked and most likely with full force.”

“Lady Marty is correct. The only reason to fly anywhere near a city is that you wish to die instantly. If you actually managed to somehow survive, that would be one of those extreme cases where you would without question be unanimously sent to one of the 7 Hell Realms.”

The ships were one thing but the line leading into the city was also different from the line of people leaving. Those that left moved across the ground with a quickness. It looked like a haze on a hot day. The line entering though was full of people simply walking into the city. The difference in speed was funny in a way.

“Why are they all walking in one end and running out the other.”

“Not just out here but inside most don’t move around too fast when it comes to crowds. There are simply too many people that vary in strength. If you run into someone that is far weaker than you. Running into them could easily crush and kill them. In this way, many slaves were getting killed randomly and for no reason simply because they were in the wrong spot at the wrong time. Many slaves are cheap but having to get a new one every few days becomes a bother and then it becomes an annoyance. I don’t have to tell you how temperamental the strong can be. Because of this, another rule was implemented. Killing anyone is already a rule but if you kill someone’s slave it’s considered damaging someone’s property and it is taken as a slight against them. If you harm or kill someone’s property, you will be jailed and be forced to pay a large fine.”

“What if ya can’t pay? We ourselves are still pretty broke.”

“If you can’t pay you are forced to fight in the arena. After you won a certain number of fights your debt will be considered repaid and the one whose property you damaged will get the winnings you would have received if you were a free fighter.”

“Jeez, that’s a real rule. The problem must have been quite bad if they came up with something like that.”
