There’s No Enemy We Can’t Beat! – Part 03
“Can we even beat this thing?”
I locked eyes with the colossal Bluey as it hovered calmly. Its altitude dropped slowly, drifting toward the hospital rooftop. Just as it neared, another ripple flared—much stronger than the ones before—and held it in place.
I looked and saw Haruna on the hospital roof. Her hands glowed ruby-red as she thrust them toward Bluey like she alone was holding it back. Well… she actually was.
“Hurry up and transform already! I told you I can only hold it four times!”
No, she didn’t. Thanks for telling me now. Really helpful timing there.
Wait. She’d already used it three times. The first was when it fell sideways. Then when the fin smashed through. And now this descent.
Which means I’ve only got one shot left, huh.
Man… guess there was no way around it. I really didn’t want to transform.
I walked over to Haruna, picked up the chainsaw lying on the ground, and chanted the spell with the same weariness you’d have when forced to read aloud in class.
“Htaed fo regnibrah a tub gnimrahc dna ylevol.”
A brilliant light enveloped me. My clothes tore away. And then… the skirt. Tears welled in my eyes. Fighting sure was hell.
As a full-fledged Magiclad Girl, I soared into the air just by willing it. I drove the chainsaw straight into the whale’s belly and carved it open. Magiclad Girls were way too overpowered.
It looked easy at first, but of course, it wasn’t. The wound I’d just carved started closing, sealing itself faster than my own regenerative abilities.
What the hell was I supposed to do? Did it have a weak spot or something?
Bluey finally made a big move. What’s the one thing whales are known for?
Correct.
Like a volcanic eruption, it blasted a thick misty spout straight from its head. An insane amount of water came pouring down from the sky like a waterfall.
I scrambled away from the torrent and watched it from a safe distance.
The sky turned pale white, like it had fogged over. It looked like a mega-fountain gone berserk. If this kept up, my entire town would be underwater. That’s how much water was pouring out. And it just kept going.
I looked down at the town and braced myself for the flood… but nothing happened. Everything stayed completely normal.
Ah, right. Haruna was blocking it. I gave her a mental standing ovation and rushed back toward the hospital rooftop.
“Ayumu! What are you doing?!” she shouted as soon as she saw my face. “Hurry up and kill it already, ‘kay?! I can’t hold on much longer!”
Yeah, I’d kill it if I could.
“How do you kill this thing?”
“Ugh. Cut off its head and it dies! So just do it!”
Right. Cut off the head. Sure. Except the thing’s neck was just as massive as everything else. If only there were one more person as strong as me who could fly.
Oh, wait. There was.
“I came because Miss Hellscythe told me to… but this town sure is full of strange things.”
As if on cue, a beautiful woman in a black cloak descended onto the hospital rooftop, fluttering down alongside fresh green leaves.
“Seriously, perfect timing.”
“Ayumu, that outfit is revolting. That outfit is revolting.”
Why say it twice? Sera was giving off strong stay away, I don’t want people thinking we know each other vibes.
“I apologize. But I can’t fly unless I look like this.”
I felt her sharp glare on my skirt. Did this outfit offend her that badly? I’m so sorry.
“What is that thing?” she asked.
It seemed like she’d either come to terms with it or stopped caring, because she finally turned her attention to Bluey.
“Whatever it is, it doesn’t exactly look like a friend, does it?”
“No, it doesn’t. It’s a foe, then?” Sera gazed at Bluey with her regal crimson eyes.
This was the fourth use of the barrier. If that thing resumed its descent now, the houses would be crushed to smithereens. We had to hurry.
“You’ll do it?”
“Understood. I’m going.”
Sera flew, her green wings beating at the air. She looked stunning and reassuring.
I took off right after her, flashing my underwear for all to see. It was at that moment I truly understood how girls must feel when they want to cover up their panties.
I told her we had to cut the head off. To sever it faster than it could regenerate, we flew in from both sides to flank Bluey.
I drove my chainsaw into the collar area of its school uniform, flying along the surface of its skin. Sera was probably heading in the opposite direction.
“Ayumu! I can’t hold it anymore!”
Faster. Faster. Faster. My mind was in a rush.
There! That had to be Sera’s starting point. The wound was healing rapidly, but I was flying faster than it could close.
Almost there… hurry, hurry, hurry.
The path I’d carved finally connected with Sera’s starting point. We’d made a full circle. Since she was faster than me, there shouldn’t be any gaps. We’d done it.
Wait. Why wasn’t Bluey’s neck falling off? I’d made it.
That’s when I heard the sound, like a mirror shattering. Water surged over the town. The barrier that had held it back all this time had finally broken. Just like a dam giving way.
The roads between houses turned into rivers. Cars were swept away by the torrent. Water roared across the entire town.
To make matters worse, the wound I’d made on Bluey vanished. What the hell was going on?
Then I realized. I cursed my own stupidity.
Of course you couldn’t sever an arm just by circling it with a razor. There was no way this tiny chainsaw could slice off something that massive.
Sera returned, wings flapping. Her normally calm face was slightly shaken. Even she looked rattled as she took in the sight of the flooding town.
“This is bad,” she said. “The town’s being washed away.”
“I know.”
“Don’t you have a plan?!”
“I’m thinking.”
“We don’t have time for that!”
“Calm down, Sera. If we lose it now, things will only get worse.”
“Tch.”
Sera held a hand to her mouth, wearing a grim look.
Below, the floodwaters surged like a tsunami, slamming into homes. Were the people inside okay?
The water hadn’t reached the second floors yet, but still, it was deep enough to submerge cars. It could swallow people whole very easily.
Even without pain receptors, my chest ached. It was frustrating. I couldn’t protect them.
What was I supposed to do? Prioritize rescue, or take down the Megalo? Was human life the top priority here?
Sera, her fists clenched tight, didn’t seem to know either.
“Ayumu! Hurry up and take it down! We can’t stop this water unless we kill that thing!” Haruna shouted from the hospital rooftop, out of breath.
“So taking it down would stop the water?”
“Of course it would!” she snapped back.
Maybe lead with that next time.
“All right. Sera, can you do another half-circle? Preferably with a sword about five times longer than last time.”
“I can. What are you planning?”
“I’ll kick it with everything I’ve got. In this getup, I feel like I can push past any limit. If you cut the lower half with a longer sword and I kick the head with full force from below, it should tear clean off.”
“Understood. I trust your strength. You’re a pervert, but I trust your strength.”
Was the rephrasing really necessary?
Sera flew off right away. Bluey was spewing mist again, making it hard to approach, but leave it to a ninja. She weaved through it and latched on without a problem.
All right, then.
“Four hundred sixty percent.” I let my limbs go limp midair and closed my eyes, slowly building up energy. “Six hundred eighty. Gotta say, this Magiclad Girl thing is impressive. Still going strong.”
“Ayumu! Hurry up, ‘kay?!”
I could hear Haruna’s voice, chaotic and full of despair. Sorry, everyone. Just hang in there a little longer. I’ll end this soon.
“Eight hundred forty. Is this my limit? No, just a little more.”
I opened my eyes. Sera had just finished her half-circle. I looked down and saw that Bluey had descended dangerously close to the hospital rooftop.
Let’s do this. I had to move fast, or the wound would close.
“Graaaaahhh!”
I shot forward, ripping through the sound barrier. I slammed my full-powered kick right into Bluey’s ridiculously massive chin.
I expected it to crack apart like splitting a roasted sweet potato. Instead, Bluey’s head exploded. My kick blasted it to bits.
The shredded flesh evaporated before it hit the ground, and the water pulled back with a hiss, vanishing somewhere unseen. Its massive body disintegrated into white particles and faded into the clouds.
We did it.
After regrouping with Haruna, I got a refresher on how to alter memories, and we started repairing the town damaged by the flood.
Apparently, this time we had to rewrite memories across a much larger area. And of course, if Sera was in that radius, her memory would be affected too. Adjusting the area of effect was tricky. We could just erase her memory, but since we lived together, I kind of wanted her to remember. Honestly, the whole thing was a drag.
Still, this Magiclad Girl thing… it really could do anything, couldn’t it? Maybe Haruna was right.
