CHAPTER 280: THE QUESTIONABLE QUESTIONS
“There are still ten tests to pass. I am representing Hamil, the god of skies. Have you ever badmouthed the Sacred Gods of the Church, or undermined them in any other way?”
Shoot, I can’t answer this carelessly. I am not so innocent in this regard. After all, we are not in good relations, and haven’t been this way since the very beginning.
“I only spoke about some subordinates. I only told the truth about the gods.”
The fact that those subordinates are their sacred gods should be kept secret. I won’t explain my answer further. The fact that the sword hasn’t punished me says that I am being truthful.
“The goddess Sylv is just and protects fire; have you, believer of a pagan god, committed the taboo of mixing with other races that worship heretic gods.”
What kind of bullcrap is this? I really feel pity towards all the believers of the Church. Their way of acting is akin to dictatorship and I should be thankful the Church doesn’t have authoritative rights. If they did, the already bad situation with other races would be that much worse.
“No, a race does not determine the value of the person, just as religion doesn’t shape their personality. There is no taboo in interacting with each other. So to answer your question, it is pointless from the beginning to the end and tells you nothing about whether or not I should be approved by you and your Church.”
“Are you preaching to the Church? Who gave you the right?”
“Yes I am, what are you going to do about it? Call me a heretic? I am not a part of your church? Hang me or burn me at the stake? I haven’t done anything wrong. So go ahead and try to condemn me.”
I knew that they could not offend the Royal family of Elicia, so they could only shut up, as long as I didn’t try to lie and hide something. At that time, they can use the excuse of the Sword of Light exerting divine punishment. What a good plan they had. But what is the attitude of the King, now that is a real question to me.
The following questions, coming from the Archbishops representing Adria, the goddess of wildlife and plants, Eva governing the seas and Doreena, goddess of time, were all meant to test if I committed any great sins against the twelve guardians, but with clever wording, I answered all of them.
I had to be extra careful when the Archbishop representing Teranino, the god of balance, asked me about the Necromancy and Undead magic. It is no big secret that I possess dark and spirit, so it is no wonder they asked me about this. I just said that nobody ever taught me how to do it.
When an Archbishop dressed in white clothes with golden sleeves approached, I could sense a different atmosphere. Unlike the indifference of the others, there is a feeling of disgust coming from him. I don’t know how I was able to offend him, but if he decides to make a move against me, I will let him suffer.
“I, as the representative of Rosa, goddess of light, ask you; do you have any titles that might bring misfortune? Either by accident or deliberately or even cause others to misunderstand and avoid you based on that.”
Shoot, why do I have to answer this? Even in court one cannot be forced to testify against oneself. Why is this fair? I have a bunch of these titles. I looked at Vitou, almost feeling apologetic. My next answer will definitely shatter some of my chances to pass the test, but there is no escaping this.
“Yeah, I have such titles.”
The reaction of the people watching was underwhelming. I must say, I was expecting them to at the very least show some disapproval or at anything, but there was only boredom with this whole matter.
“Tell me the titles, maybe they can be overridden by a blessing of a god if you join the Church.”
As if I would want to do that. But hey, since we’re here, let’s get this out of the way. The truth would come out sooner or later.
“Daughter of Death, Calamity of Crown Coliseum, Merciless, Deathgod, Object of Desire, Curse Magician, Dragon Bride, Dungeon Master. Any one of those could be used to condemn me with, but before you do that, think carefully about what wrong I did.”
“A heathen! You will never receive blessings from Rosa-sama. Only those of pure heart can achieve that. From the titles you hold, I can tell you are nothing like that.”
And? I only need three blessings. Having him approve of me makes little difference. But, why are they asking these questions? It seems they have no point regarding whether or not I get approved and just want to shame me. I looked up and saw the King frowning.
“Everyone, hold on a second. Naoko-chan, you just said you have the Dungeon Master title. Don’t you know that it is a crime to allow dungeons to exist? The ”
“Your Majesty, if you recall, I destroyed a dungeon here in the capital. Before doing so, I have to become its master. It is only normal that I have that title.”
“Is that really all? Why didn’t the title change or disappear?”
Why is the King doing this? He should be the one defending me the most. After all, this entire thing is started by him. How come he changed his mind?
“I am no longer teaching, but I still have the Teacher title.”
Could the titles even disappear? I never heard about titles being able to do that. I thought that once you get the title it is for eternity. I never lost a single one of them, so I never thought about that option.
“You have a point. Maybe there hasn’t been a long enough time for it to disappear. You can continue, I won’t interrupt anymore.”
I watched as the remaining three Archbishops glanced at the King before one of them stepped up. Let’s get things over with, only three more questions.
