CHAPTER 240: WOMAN’S STRONGEST WEAPON
“What is the meaning of this? You two seem to know something. Nao-chan, spill it! What did you do?”
Vitou was demanding an explanation and I was glaring at the Archduke. He was the one that put me in this situation. Seeing him unaffected by my deathly glare, I could only give up and remain silent. Vitou wasn’t happy with that, but I didn’t speak any further. The silent stand-off continued until Daisuke returned with Taichi.
“Your Highness, I overheard some guards saying that the stolen item was the Sword of Fire. However, nobody was able to figure out how it was stolen. According to them, there are no signs of forceful break-in aside from strange holes in walls and floors of the King’s bedroom, but they are too small to allow a human to get in.”
Daisuke was completely oblivious to the atmosphere inside the room. I wanted to curse everyone here for being too nosy. Vitou was furious, but didn’t start yelling at me, yet. I swore in my heart to firmly deny all accusations, no matter how much he interrogates me.
“Go on, what else did you hear?”
“Well, that’s for the normal rumors I heard. Aside from the Sword, nothing else seems to be missing. The strangest thing I overheard was the eyewitness that claimed he saw a sword flying in the air, but as you can expect, nobody believes it.”
I was not worried about eyewitnesses. Even if they saw everything, nobody would believe a word of what they were saying. After all, who would believe that a bird is able to carry away a sword? They would become the biggest joke once they say it.
“Good, the two of you should go and stand guard outside. Don’t let others inside.”
When the two of them left, Vitou turned his attention back to me with a questioning look. I guess he was trying to figure out whether or not I stole that sword and how I was able to pull it off. After all, I was unconscious all the time in the dining hall and he was with me after the banquet. I made sure to keep my poker face and act as if none of this is related to me.
The first one to break the silence was the Archduke
“I really don’t care that you caused all this mess, I am curious as to how you pulled it off. Even I wasn’t able to trace your movement. Also, since this made a dent in your wedding plans, I can’t stand aside and let you ruin my hard work.”
“Wait a second. Did she really steal the Sword of Fire? How is that possible? She was in the hall the entire time, and once we got back you were sure she didn’t leave us for more than a few minutes. Nao-chan, you really overstepped your boundaries this time around. Do you have any idea how serious this issue is? That sword is a national treasure and a symbol of peace between two countries!”
Screw you Archduke. Did you really have to say all that? I don’t care that you know it, but was telling Vitou really necessary? I looked at Vitou with my eyes showing blame and unwillingness. If he wants to blame me, I have no other choice.
I thought about how I was forced into this marriage, I thought about being pressured into ranking up, how I can’t live peacefully. I thought about all the grievances I suffered because of everyone in this room and all the feelings I kept bottled down came rushing out.
I felt my vision become blurry and a huge lump in my throat made it hard for me to breathe. I didn’t care about my appearance and started to wail on the spot. This was my last defense, if this doesn’t work, I’m afraid nothing will.
***VITOU’S POV***
This was truly unbelievable. I exerted my pressure on her and waited for her explanation. I was not going to let her off this time. This incident cannot be counted as a mere prank, her actions tonight could cause huge discord between the two kingdoms, maybe even war. There needs to be a limit to her waywardness.
As I looked at her full of blame, she looked unwilling to speak at all. It made me feel sick. She still didn’t want to behave, even when things have come to this point.
I was about to scold her when I saw tears starting to swell in her eyes. I had no idea what she was trying to pull off, pretending to be pitiful like this, but I soon gave up the idea of pressuring her further. I could see clearly the pain and grief behind those tears. She was by no means pretending to cry.
It didn’t take long before she began to wail. Seeing her like this, I was tongue-tied. It felt like something was crushing me when I heard those cries. I wanted to go forward, but my feet wouldn’t listen to me. This is the first time something like this happened to me.
“Nao-chan… I…”
I couldn’t say anything, she became like this because of me. I don’t know how I should comfort her. I never saw her looking weak like this. I never saw her showing emotions so clearly like this. She always put on a brave front and kept her proud attitude that I forget she was still a young girl.
I knew she was not pretending and she was really feeling wronged in this situation. I could feel here mana going wild causing pressure in the room and the emotions she was feeling also affected me. I gathered all my will and moved forward. No matter what, I must comfort her. When I approached her wanting to touch her, she slapped my hand away and yelled out with her hoarse voice.
“Get out! All of you get out! Leave me alone!”
“Nao-chan, listen to me…”
Sadly, before I could finish my sentence, I felt a pulling sensation and the next moment I found myself in the ruined dining hall alongside Archduke, Fulgur and the two heroes that seemed confused. Fulgur shot me a piercing glare before changing into a dragon and flying away. It really hurt knowing I was the one that made Nao-chan sad.
“Your Highness, what are you doing outside? We were on our way to inform you that our search was successful and a thief was caught. We brought an apology gift as well. Please forgive us for disturbing you and your friends tonight.”
The guards passing by delivered the last punch to me. I really messed up this time around. I wanted to blame the Archduke for misleading me, but he seemed just as surprised to hear the news. It seems that even he thought Nao-chan was the culprit. I really owe her an apology.
