CHAPTER 31 – SETTING THE TRAP
I finished my story and only then did I realize that we were already in front of town. I didn’t know how much he could understand from my words since I did use some odd ones that shouldn’t be known in this place, but he didn’t interrupt me once while I talked. He carefully listened to my story and he didn’t judge me at all. Nobody knows about my background aside from my sister, and now this man. Even Hii-chan who remained my friend ever since I was in
kindergarten does not know about my family. And now I told it to this person. I was certain that I was made to tell all this by him, but I didn’t feel bad about telling him which was odd, especially since I didn’t want others to know.
“Evening Naoko, I see you are back, who is this lovely man next to you? Is he your loved one?”
I snapped back to reality. The guard at the gate commented my mysterious man and I blushed immediately. I murmured something intelligible and showed him my ID and immediately went for the guild building.
“Now that is a story that you do not hear every day. I have no idea how you can grow up like that, but to you it must have all been normal. I cannot imagine it at all. So does that mean that you never killed a man before that attack on your house?”
“Shh, don’t talk about it. And yeah, we can’t go out before we turn sixteen. Mother had forbidden it and I am glad she did. As weird and insane she might have been to others to me she was my mother and I loved her.”
I was hurrying down the street, but even so soon whispers began. I should have known this would happen. My mysterious man was attracting attention. He may have been clad in black from head to toe, but you couldn’t hide the presence he has. The one that tells all the girls ‘this man is handsome’.
I reached the guild and entered it. Usually my appearance at the guild is accompanied by countless whispers about my drunk self, but this time it was different. There were no murmurs. There was no gossip. In fact, as soon as the two of us entered the room, everyone was silent.
And I literally mean everyone. Nobody, not even the people at the counters were talking. Being the gentleman that he is my mystery man held the door open for me and as I entered he placed his hand on my shoulder and led me towards the free counter.
“Umm, what are you doing? Can’t you see that everyone is staring at us? There is no need to act like this; it will definitely make things more complicated.”
“I don’t mind it at all. And besides there are some hungry looks coming towards you, this may sound preposterous coming from me, but I do not like those looks being thrown at you. Think of it as keeping others at bay.”
I felt my heart skip a beat. I did not think he would be the petty type and the one that
would easily get jealous. I couldn’t help but smile at his action as I let him lead me. I accepted the reward for the request and decided to stay at the guild for a drink or two. After all, I needed to meet the Guild Master, that was currently away, and should be back soon.
“You know Nao-chan, I have a feeling that you are on the edge about this assailant of yours. Would you want me to help you directly? I can assure you that she will make a move if I act.”
“Would you really do that? I had you marked as the type that would not move unless it is
absolutely necessary to move. Otherwise, you would only watch and see how things turn out to be.”
“Think of it as payment. Your story is worth at least that much, I knew you wouldn’t be
simple, but I did not expect such background. Besides, I think something interesting will happen if I stick my nose here.”
I looked at him who had a mischievous smile as he looked around the room. I couldn’t read him at all. I had absolutely no idea what he was planning on doing, but somehow I got the feeling that I will regret it one way or another. But thinking about it, most likely I will be able to find out about what was happening to me and why.
He stood up and went over to order some drinks. I could see him attracting gazes of
everyone in the guild, including my own. This is only natural. He was an unfamiliar face in this place and not to mention he had an aura that was hard to ignore. That is something very powerful people have from my past experiences.
“Thank you for the drink, but I hope you know that I can’t handle alcohol well.”
“Don’t worry I got you some tea. Now by the time you finish that drink you will be ready to uncover your assailant, trust me.”
He sat down next to me and pulled his chair really close. I was hyper aware of him as he stood there. It was distracting and the whispers from other adventurers around me didn’t help me focus at all. I held my cup and took a big sip of tea and immediately I felt something was wrong.
“Oh I forgot to tell you, I had the bartender put some rum in it.”
I remember cursing him inwardly as I felt dizziness overcame me.
***NINO’S POV***
Millie-chan appeared at me door saying that uncle wanted to see me at the guild. She must have ran all the way here to deliver the message as she was completely out of breath.
Something must have happened as he called for me all of a sudden. I got ready in a hurry andnleft with Millie-chan.It seems that Naoko-san left a note for the Guild Master that explained all her suspicions and had asked for the help of someone that can see and track aura. It is no wonder uncle called for me.
Being able to sense aura was a rare inborn gift that I had. The note also had an explanation of aura she was looking out for and attached to it was a broken pot. But the most serious thing was the fact Anika-sama had that trace of aura. I could mean nothing, but the fact she came in contact with it is a serious thing.
Almost immediately the two of us began searching the town and sure enough we found countless traces of that aura and many were on potentially lethal objects that could kill others if they fell down. I could not believe that Naoko-san was able to avoid death so many times in the past week or so. I can’t tell if she is lucky or unlucky.
Unfortunately we couldn’t find a single person that matched with that aura. And just like she said, but Anika-sama did have traces of it, something I didn’t like seeing. That green toxic color was really unpleasant. As the sun had set down we decided to go back to the guild and talk to Naoko-san about further actions.
“Listen up you all, this Queen does not allow others to make light of her at all. That is why this Queen will never go down drinking!”
Naoko-san not again! She was standing on top of the table with twelve people around her passed out drunk. Just how did she knock out twelve people by sundown, that is way too much even for her? When four more people came, I realized just how reckless she was being.
Taking on four people at once and drinking more than them is not normal at all.
“Hou, this is quite interesting to see her acting so timid. She must be head over heels in love with that man.”
I finally took notice of another person sitting at her table. He was clad all in black and remained silent all the time as Naoko-san was drinking. But I couldn’t see any of the timidness that uncle mentioned. She seemed as ruthless as ever towards her challengers.
But then I noticed, almost every time she downed a drink she would look to him almost as if she was asking for a praise. And she would always smile whenever she looked at him. It was funny to see it as she was more of a kitty in front of him than a tigress. Truly as my uncle said it; she was completely smitten.
