Given his knowledge of Skills and such, Cardinal Georgios was likely linked to the Empire. The fact that the effects of his death still lingered to this day is proof that he had considerable influence in the heart of the kingdom.
“If you don’t want land, I’ll have to offer a different reward,” the king said, “but the difficult part is that I don’t know what you want. I’m sure you can earn all the money you want on your own, and if there’s something you need, you’ll probably just figure it out yourself.”
“Well, I can’t do that with everything. I can manage to get monster materials, but not equipment. I can’t do any blacksmithing work.”
In BBO, while there were players like me who specialized in combat, there were also workers who specialized in production-type Skills. They crafted gear for us. But in this world, that’s impossible. People in Count Meigis’ place are developing their skills, but it will take a long time for their crafting abilities to be of use.
The staff I am using now was sold to me by Maxia Trading. It’s excellent for what is available in this world right now, and it’s far superior to anything that can be made in our domain. I’ve asked Myna to show me staffs that caught her eye, but to be honest, I haven’t found anything stronger than what I have currently.
But that may change with the national treasury. After all, treasuries usually contain items that are highly valuable. I might not be able to ask for one, but if they could at least lend me some item, it should greatly increase our power.
What I’m particularly looking forward to is equipment such as armor and ornaments. I already have a decent staff, but I don’t even have any armor or ornaments on me at the moment. Items on the market are so awful that I would rather not equip them because of the increased weight.
However, the fact that I only have mediocre equipment means that I have a lot of room to grow. Awakened Skills are excellent, but there are many pieces of equipment with equally broken capabilities. If I can just get a hold of one of them, there’s a good chance that I can overwhelm those with Awakened skills just by brute force.
On the other hand, if I don’t get powerful gear while the enemy gets one, I’ll be at a huge disadvantage in terms of magic and Skill capabilities. I can probably overcome the disadvantage with strategy, but there might be a time where that’s not even possible. Until now, I’ve been able to turn the tides to my favor—overcoming differences in numbers—by taking advantage of the weaknesses in my opponent’s strategy. But there’s no guarantee that all my future opponents will be people with low combat skills.
In order to avoid such problems, it’s best for us to arm ourselves first. It’s difficult to guess the enemy’s strength, but it’s never a problem to increase your own strength.
“Equipment, huh? The treasury has a lot of curious items in it, but to be honest, there’s probably not much you could use. Useful and powerful equipment is used in the army, not stored in the treasury. If there’s something you want, we can give you what the army uses, but is there anything in particular that you want?”
“No, not really. It’s hard to say what I want without seeing what’s available.”
To be honest, there are plenty of items I want. But if I mentioned the BBO item names, no one would probably have any idea.
And I don’t even know if they’re called by the same name in this world. Most of them may not even exist here.
After all, most powerful items are created with a large amount of materials and complex processes; they’re not something that you just happen upon randomly. Looking at the level of equipment available in this world, it’s safe to say that there are almost no people with the Skills to create such items.
If there’s no one who can make it, there’s no way it can exist. Well, unless they used to have the technology to make them, but somehow the technique became obsolete over time, and now only a few can craft the items. That would be a different story. The staff I’m using now seems to be of that sort.
As for items that can be obtained directly from monsters, such as the Wisdom Stone, there’s a possibility that they can be obtained in this world as well. What I’d rather have are things like that—things that are left unused in this world because people don’t know how to use them. I’m sure I can find some unexpected bargains on equipment as well.
“I see,” the king said. “I’m not sure if there’s anything you would want, but do you want to go check the treasury anyway?”
“Is that okay?”
“Yeah. Most of the items inside are rare and useless, but maybe you can find some use for them that we don’t know about.”
Rare items that have no use… That sounds promising.
It’s often the case that something that is seemingly useless is more powerful than something that is just obviously strong. Like how the Sage staff I use is worse than some cheap staff in the hands of this world’s average Mage.
On the other hand, a look at the strength of the Royal Army says I can’t expect much from something that they’re using. If they were really strong by BBO standards, they wouldn’t be outmatched by three Sages who could only use Sandstorm.
What’s more, this royal palace has been occupied by the enemy once. If there was an obvious super-powerful item, the enemy would have taken it already. I can only hope that there’s some obscure yet powerful item that the enemy failed to notice.
“Let me see them,” I said.
“All right. I’ll show you right away.”
“You personally?”
“Negotiation for the reward will be much easier that way.” The king got up from his seat.
Let’s see what curiosities the kingdom has accumulated so far, shall we?
