With a twang of the bow, the arrow flew forward, chasing Lena from behind.
*Pshk*
The arrow tore through the backside of Lena’s neck and pierced through the front and was stuck poking halfway out of her throat.
Lena grabbed her neck and collapsed to the ground in front of someone. Blood spurted out violently from the wound and she struggled to breathe as she coughed and choked on her own blood. Her eyes went wide as she realized her fate but still, she struggled. Reaching out toward the feet of the person in front of her, she died right there and then.
From behind, Mac and the others caught up. They saw a hooded figure standing over Lena and hurriedly gave an explanation.
“Be careful, this woman is a fugitive and she could be faking her death. We were hunting her thorough the north when we saw her sneak into this town, thankfully we caught up to her in time and finished her before she could harm anyone.”
Mac smiled inwardly, thinking his acting was perfect.
It was only now though that he took notice of Jamie and his other companion’s expressions.
Mac whispered to Jamie.
“Oy, what’s the matter with you, why are you looking so pale?”
Jamie gulped hard before whispering back.
“Mac, the windows, look at the windows.”
Mac didn’t understand what he meant and took a peek at the nearby buildings. As soon as he looked at one window he found something quite ordinary.
He could see the figure of someone, though he couldn’t quite make out whether it was a man or a woman. He couldn’t see a face at all. Not only that, but there were also a few red spots of something on the window. Mac didn’t have the best eyes so he couldn’t tell what it was. He was about to tell Jamie off but the way Jamie looked told him something was wrong.
Mac then stole a side glance at another window a house away. Again there was a figure standing in the window, seemingly peering out at him. Once more, there were also those same red spots all over the window.
(That’s odd.)
Mac then took a peek out of his peripheral and spotted another house with another figure at a window and just a house down was the exact same. Looking around discretely, he began to grow alarmed as every window that he could see, had a figure standing in it watching them.
(Those red spots, its blood.)
The hairs began to stand up on the back of Mac’s neck one by one and his intuition was screaming at him to run away as fast as possible.
Mac whispered back to his group.
“This town isn’t abandoned, it’s been taken over.”
Jamie felt his heart sink hearing that and his hands gripped his staff more tightly.
“Mac, what in the 7 realms of hell do you mean taken over?”
“All the windows have people in them but no ones responded to us and they’re all watching. Not only that, but those windows also have blood all over them. My guess is this place was attacked by bandits not too long ago and it was a slaughter. The bandits have taken over entirely and left no one. That would explain why no official has responded with a communicator. Not only that, but they also stayed here to ambush anyone foolish enough to enter, this place is a death trap. They’re waiting for us to lower our guard and then they’ll attack us. We need to make a run for it and we need to do it as soon as possible.”
Everyone felt the severity of the situation but no one acted stupidly and they all remained calm. This wasn’t the first time they faced death. Jamie whispered softly.
“Boss, on your command.”
Mac gave a slight nod and turned his attention back to the person standing over Lena’s corpse. He tried to make small talk and pretend as if he wasn’t aware of the situation.
“Citizen, thank you for standing in this criminal’s way. I’m sure you will be rewarded for your courageous dee…”
In the middle of his sentence, the person standing over Lena’s dead body, slowly bent down and grabbed Lena’s arm, and lifted it.
Mac and the others couldn’t understand what this hooded person was doing.
“Um, miss, sir, what are you doing?”
The hooded figure opened its mouth and razor-sharp teeth lined within. Before Mac or anyone else could say anything, this person bit down on Lena’s arm and started eating like a madman.
*Crunch munch crunch*
This took a few seconds to register on everyone’s mind but as soon as it did, Mac roared at his crew.
“RUNNNNN!”
Mac and the others turned and hightailed it to the town’s gate with their fastest speed. As soon as they turned around to run through, several people appeared in front of them, their speed and arrival both astonished Mac and his crew and frightened them. There was something wrong with the appearance of these people as well. Each of the people in front of them whether they be men, women, or children, all of them had crimson red eyes but there seemed to be no thoughts behind such eyes.
Even more, Mac and his crew could feel that something was completely wrong with this situation.
Mac ran in front of his people and didn’t hesitate to swing his ax down, cleaving completely through a man from shoulder to the opposite side of his waist. Looking back, once more, he roared at his companions.
“CUT THEM DOWN, LET NO ONE STAND IN OUR WAY!”
Jamie and the others froze on the spot and pointed in front of Mac.
“What, why are you pointing at the front, lets mow these…”
“Mac look in front of you!”
Jamie interrupted him before Mac could finish and Mac quickly looked back at the man he had just cut in half. The man had refused to fall and his two halves didn’t break away from one another either. Not only that, purplish-black blood leaked from the wound but before it splashed onto the ground, as though defying gravity, all of the blood pulled upward and reentered the wound, closing it entirely.
Mac froze seeing this and that’s when an eery voice came out from behind.
“St…ay”
The hooded figure eating Lena’s corpse said this but the voice sounded unnatural. Once he said that the man who just healed in front of Mac also opened his mouth and spoke.
“St…ay.”
Following this, all of the people spoke.
“St..ay.”
“St..ay.”
“St..ay.”
“St..ay.” “St..ay.” “St..ay.” “St..ay.”
“St..ay.”
“St..ay.” “St..ay.” “St..ay.” “St..ay.” “St..ay.” “St..ay.” “St..ay.”
“St..ay.” “St..ay.” “St..ay.” “St..ay.” “St..ay.” “St..ay.” “St..ay.” “St..ay.” “St..ay.” “St..ay.” “St..ay.”
Voices echoed all around as hundreds poured out of buildings and they all repeated the same thing.
Mac screamed.
“MONSTERS!”
He once more swung his ax but this time the man put up a hand to block. Mac’s ax cut through his hand all the way through and sliced all the way up the man’s forearm. The man didn’t utter a single cry though. No wince of pain, no moan of agony. Instead, his arm warped into a larger hand and grabbed Mac’s ax, and took it from him.
“MAC HELP US!”
Jamie yelled at the top of his lungs as he and the others were grabbed by these monsters and couldn’t get away.
Mac felt his blood run cold. The man in front of him reached out with a hand 6 times bigger than normal and tried to take hold of him.
“NOoooooo!”
An inscription tattoo glowed on Mac’s arm and he felt his body fill with power and strength. He leaped above the monster and landed on a nearby roof.
(I have to escape!)
Just as Mac was about to leap away, he felt someone grab his shoulder from behind. His adrenaline pumped and his heart pounded like a drum in his chest. He turned to look and to his horror, it was the monster that had stolen his ax.
(So fast!)
Mac elbowed the monster directly in the face but it didn’t budge him whatsoever. The monster instead opened its mouth quickly and bit down on Mac’s elbow. The razor-sharp teeth and terrifying strength severed Mac’s arm at the elbow and the monster swallowed it down whole. At the same time, the monster’s grip on Mac’s shoulder increased severalfold and he felt his shoulder break on the spot.
*Snap*
“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”
Mac screamed in agony and he felt his knees buckle under him and he lost strength in his body. He would have fallen over completely but the monster held him in the air.
At this moment he heard the screams of his crew as they two had limbs torn off and eaten in front of them. Right now though, Mac was slipping in and out of consciousness from the pain and could barely understand what was what anymore.
The monster’s voice rang out once more, which pushed Mac over the edge of insanity. The last thing he heard was…
“St…ay.”
