CHAPTER 100: A SPONSOR

“Your parents must be oh so proud to have you become an arrogant p*ick that has no respect towards others whatsoever.”

The sarcastic remark I said, made him frown while the rest of the party gasped in unison.

I was done being nice and respectful with them. If they don’t let me pass I don’t mind using force to get past them.

“How dare you say those words to me? Don’t you know the difference in status between the two of us? You are just a lowly adventurer and are not even worthy to look at me, a noble.”

“Yes, I am indeed aware of the difference between the two of us. You are nothing but a noble’s son, not even the inheritor of the title and yet you go around showing off like you own the whole world. Allow me to introduce myself again.”

My words seemed to have hit a nerve with him. Without giving him time to talk back, I once again introduced myself, but this time I made sure to use Dark Magic and made them feel weak and dizzy as I talked.

“I am Maeda Naoko, C-rank adventurer stationed in Orzak town. I bear the title [Elemental Empress], leader of Dragon’s Descent guild and bearer of noble rank of Viscountess. With all that I should be the one saying you are not worth to stand before me and not the other way around. Mark my words, never, ever judge others just because you think you are better than them. You never know when you might hit a steel plate. I will let you off this time since I am in a hurry, but if I see you again, you better pray that you don’t step on my toes.”

I could see their faces changing color upon hearing my words. The two girls in the party looked like they are about to faint and the baron’s son seemed like he might puke at a moment’s notice.

Seeing their shock, I began walking away and moving towards the village. This time around, none of them dared to stop me and they even opened up a path for me to pass. As soon as they were out of sight, I began running and used [Blink] to shorten the time of travel.

This is the first time I used my noble title to pressure someone. It sure is handy to have it in a situation like this.

When I reached the village, I immediately went to look for the chief and reported everything that I learned about the temple and the cause of the rain. I spoke about the layout of the temple and the underground lake and how I defeated the ghost that was causing the rain, but I didn’t say anything about finding legendary equipment nor did I mention the serpent and the loot I took while in the lake. If it got out that I possess these items, it will only bring me trouble. The less people know the better it is for me.

“My, my you sure did a lot for us. I want to thank you personally, but we don’t have much to offer. How about you come and join me and my family for dinner? It may not be much but please accept this act of kindness.”

Hmm, now that I think about it, this village does not look very prosperous. They probably aren’t able to get much money to invest into development since there isn’t much to get out of it. I decided to accept the chief’s offer since it would really be rude otherwise.

Dinner was simple and modest, but very delicious nonetheless. I have learned that this village mainly lived off of farming and cattle and they couldn’t develop much, since there is not a lot of people passing through here and the trade is not connected with large routes.

“Then, have you thought about promoting it as a tourist destination. This will be great, since you have the temple nearby and you will most likely be able to attract young nobles wanting to explore the ancient site. It will take some investment from the village, but in the long term it should pay off.”

The chief looked intrigued with this idea, however…

“That really sounds interesting , but sadly we cannot afford even that much. We would need to find a sponsor among nobles who would be willing to invest in our village, but nobody wants to do that for a small village like ours. It would be better for them to support areas where there are large trades going on.”

Hou, that is an interesting point.

“Is that so, well I guess there is a lot of work to do, like making a plan, clearing the trees and making a route to the temple. Then clearing the rubble so that the temple looks decent enough and also making sure that the hunters mow down the monsters in the woods around it. That would take a lot of money as well. And even with all that done, you would need to spread the word about this place and once all that is done having inns and other places to hold the guests will also cost money. No wonder you will need a sponsor. I really didn’t think this through. The entire cost would be well over a few hundred gold.”

“Actually I think all of that wouldn’t even cost hundred gold, at least the first phase
wouldn’t be that much. If we hire adventurers to help, I might even need to pay less. And the forest has good quality wood so that can be used to build inns and other accommodation and it can be used during winter to keep us warm. According to my calculation I would need about seventy gold to set everything in motion. But without a noble backing this project, nobody would visit since they would think this is merely a commoner’s thing to pass the time. Having a backing will make this more popular and less likely to fail.”

“I sincerely hope you will be able to find luck and do this project.”

Even without trying, I was able to sway the chief into thinking about doing this. I talked some more with him and realized that he was truly a kind person that cares about the village and its villagers. I had a feeling that if I entrust this idea to him, he would be able to make it come alive. That is why I decided to help him. In the dead of the night I snuck inside his office and left a package for him sealed with my official seal that was given to me when I was in
Kapitalia and a letter explaining my true identity as a Viscountess as well as official statement that said I was the sponsor and backer of this project.

In the package I left fifty gold and few jewels that I looted from the temple. That should cover most of the costs that were needed to start this project. To ensure nobody other than the chief opens it I placed curse magic that would react to anyone other than the chief opening the package. I got the idea for this magic thanks to Irina and Anika who did something similar while trying to kill me with potted plants and other things that were meant to fall on me.

With everything done I left the village and went back home to Orzak.

***AUGUSTUS’S POV***

“Hey dad, have you ever heard about Maeda noble house?”

That woman yesterday mocked me and humiliated me in front of my party. I don’t know what she did to all of us, but when she spoke I couldn’t move a muscle and felt really weak and dizzy. She must have used some curse to make us feel like that. I refuse to believe that a kid overpowered me with mere pressure and a commoner one nonetheless.

“No, I don’t think I have heard of that noble house. Why do you ask? Did you go and provoke someone again? I told you countless times not to act arrogant to people you don’t know. Why do you think I made you join that party? You need to grow up and take responsibility for your actions, don’t go insulting everything and everyone you meet.”

“Dad, does that mean I should let even commoners insult me?! That woman tricked me, even humiliated me. What is worse she even claimed to be a Viscountess and even made up silly titles saying she is known as [Elemental Empress] and stuff like that. Who would ever believe such lies? Haha, I must have been stupid to freeze in fear. Dad her name is Naoko Maeda if you ever meet her, make sure to take revenge for me.”

I thought my dad would agree immediately with me. Although he sent me to be an adventurer, he never allowed anyone to insult our noble house. However, when his face turned pale I suddenly had a bad feeling.

“Son please tell me you didn’t insult that person in any way. I didn’t recognize that name since it really isn’t a noble house, but now that you told me her name and her title, I fear you have made a terrible mistake. She is indeed a Viscountess and one who was personally granted that title by the King himself. Not only that, but I can say for sure that she is one of the strongest
people in this kingdom. I shall pray that you stay alive because even I don’t dare go against her. She defeated the Disappearing Demon in a fight and even went head to head with the Crown Prince and finished the duel with a draw.”

For the first time in a while, I became truly scared. I think I really messed up this time around. Just like Maeda-sama suggested, I will definitely stay away from her in the future. From here on out I promise that if I ever see her, I will turn around and walk the other way. I will never let myself be seen by this monster again. I love to live and I don’t want my life to come to an early end. This will be a promise of a lifetime to me.
