CHAPTER 101: THE OCEAN

I took my time returning to Orzak so by the time I got there it was already late in the morning. I wasn’t planning on going to the inn and simply wanted to check in at the guild to finish the request and to see if there are any that needs me to travel to the seaside. The morning rush should have already ended, which is why I was surprised to see so many people gathered at the guild room.

I walked to the counter where Nino-san was working. When I first started as an adventurer, I told myself that I would make Nino-san my designated receptionist, but when I realized that there is no such thing, I was a bit sad. However, as time passed the people in the guild got used to the fact that I always choose to go to Nino’s counter and now, whenever I enter the guild, the adventurers often give up their position for me to go to Nino-san. He really became my designated receptionist, even though he never planned on doing that. This is why I love whenever he is working since most of the time I don’t have to wait.

“Good morning Nino-san, what’s with all this crowd here?”

I passed him my guild card and the completed request form.

“Good morning Naoko-chan, I see you are back already and with another completed request. You may not know this, but today an adventurer called Banbo is coming back after almost nine months away. He is the only A-rank adventurer that lives in Orzak. I don’t think you met him, since you arrived after he left.”

This sounds interesting, all these people were most likely waiting to hear the stories
about his adventures. I wanted to stay and take a look, but I made a promise to the serpent, that is why meeting this adventurer will have to wait. While he was processing the request I took a look at the board and picked up three more requests that required me to visit the seaside. They were two D and one C-rank request.

“Here is your guild card Naoko-san, you will need fifteen more B-rank requests to rank up. I must say your progress is astounding. If you didn’t take that break to train for the past three months, I think you would already be B-rank adventurer. Also here are the packages for your deliveries. Have a safe trip.”

I bid goodbye to Nino-san and left. In order to reach the seaside, I needed to pass through a tunnel that went straight through a mountain range and unfortunately it was open every other day for each side. Since I chose a bad day, I had to spend the night in an inn. It didn’t make much sense to me, since the tunnel was large enough, but upon seeing the caravan of traders the next day, I realized why such schedule was made.

Another reason for this rule was because the tunnel was actually a maze of natural caverns and you could only enter in the company of an official guide, otherwise you would end up lost in the caverns. Sadly, because of this rule, I was stuck travelling at a snail’s pace. I felt like the ten hours it took to pass through the maze could have been so much shorter if I had been alone. Next time, I will definitely go over the mountain just so I don’t have to endure this torture again.

As soon as I was out of the tunnels, I didn’t bother staying around and chatting with others and immediately went towards my destination. Luckily, I was able to reach it before they closed the city gates. Not that they would stop me from entering either way.

The air here was different. You could smell the salty air and the soft wind felt soothing to me. I could see myself relaxing and simply doing nothing the whole day long. Wanting to finish the request, I went to this city’s guild branch. It was oddly quiet considering it was already evening.

“Good evening. I am here to finish a request. I have these packages that need to be delivered here. Here is my guild card.”

The counters here were all empty, so I chose the closest one where a middle aged woman was working. She took my card and processed it without a word. I found it rather odd, since they always asked something about requests. I wonder if she is sworn to silence or something like that, since she didn’t even greet me.

She handed me the guild card and then took out a booklet. Opening one of the pages she showed it to me. “Do you need anything else” was written there. I noticed she was looking at me intensely as she waited for an answer. A thought popped into my head, maybe she is deaf and couldn’t speak. Slowly, I said the next words and shook my head while using sign language to say thank you.

“No, thank you very much for the help. Have a good night.”

I gave a slight bow and saw her smiling as I left. I don’t know if she understood my gesture, but she seemed really glad to be able to do her job. Who knows, I am just glad to be done with two of my requests. Now I need to release the serpent and also ask it to give me a ride to my next destination, since it is on an island not too far from here.

Considering there was still a lot of people roaming around the city, I didn’t want to release it just yet, so I spent my time sightseeing and buying whatever I found interesting. Hoarding has become a habit for me, since I had all the space in the world to keep things. And who knows when all of this might come in handy to me.

Finally, when everything was calm and most of the people were asleep, I went over to the pier avoiding the guards on patrol and took out my sword. I held it above my head and swung it while releasing its skill. All this was good, but I overlooked one major thing. The sound of thousands upon thousands of liters of water including one oversized Demon of the Sea hitting the surface of the sea was by no means quiet. It soon created a huge ruse among the guards on patrol and those stationed near the pier.

“Quick! Hide me, I can’t get caught.”

I called out to the serpent. I could hear the guards rushing over here. The serpent simply lowered its head and allowed me to hop on. Without any delay, I jumped on and let it carry me away.

“You were true to your word devil human. If it’sss you I don’t mind giving you help whenever you are at sssea. If you ever need anything, call my name and ussse that pendant. I ssshall come to your aid.”

[SKILL: Taming has reached LV5]

“Thank you… umm… I guess I need a name for you; Guardian of the Deep and Demon of the Sea just isn’t rolling off the tongue easily.”

“A name? I never had one, not before.”

“In that case I will name you Triton after the son of Neptune, the god of the sea.”

As soon as I said those words, I felt vertigo hit me and the very next moment my consciousness slipped away as the world turned black for me.
