CHAPTER 103: NIGHT BATTLE

I woke up to the sound of explosions around me. The last thing I remember, was escaping from the night patrol after releasing Triton, so how did I end up in a battle all of a sudden? I was still atop the serpent Triton’s head. But I could not recognize my surroundings, as all I could see was the sea. I immediately jumped up and held Sapphire, that was physically trembling, more tightly in my hand.

“What is going on here?”

“A ssship attacked, brace yourssself. I’m going to attack back.”

I looked around and spotted a ship that he mentioned. It was not flying any flag, but the barrage of cannons didn’t stop. This is by no means a trade ship, since they can afford to attack a monster that is obviously extremely strong. I even thought that it was pirates that wanted to earn some glory and bragging rights by defeating Triton.

“I’ll fight as well. Nobody will dare to harm you on my watch. Come elementals, I offer you my mana in exchange for your help. It’s time to go wild. Triton, you can dive underwater anytime you want.”

As I was saying that, a whirlpool almost fifty meters wide, began forming around us. Nice try, but useless effort. I took the Mermaid’s Tear and infused mana into it. As I did that, I imagined the water calming down. This was my first time using it and sure enough, the might of legendary ranked item didn’t disappoint. The whirlpool that was forming disappeared without a trace and all that was left was calm surface. It was a truly fearsome item.

“Hold on tight devil woman.”

Triton dove underwater and hid from the barrage of cannons.

***VITOU’S POV***

“Your Highness, that creature should have complete control over water. He killed my magic instantaneously. I will switch to sensing magic. Taichi I’m leaving the defense to you.”

Oddly enough, those two after becoming my bodyguards, became extremely in sync in a very short time. I was worried that they could not find the needed teamwork since they didn’t travel together, but seeing as one is the strongest magician among heroes and the other is the strongest swordsman, I can guess they can rely on each other and believe their backs will be safe.

I observed the two of them feeling at ease. Keeping an eye out for any surprises we all waited. The silence was excruciating, but nobody dared to relax their guard.

“BENEATH US!”

The temperature plummeted immediately and the next moment a large thud was heard. Sadly, I didn’t have time to think about it since above us an enormous amount of water came crashing down.

Deploying the wind barrier, I guarded the whole ship from the falling water. The pressure was real and I was actually starting to feel exhaustion, something I haven’t felt in a long time.

“Ishiwaka, Nakamura, we have two enemies. Nakamura didn’t you see anything aside from the serpent?”

“No Your Highness, I only saw the serpent. Please forgive my error.”

“Could it be some sort of hiding skill?”

“No matter what skill is used, if I can see it I can learn about it.”

So he really didn’t see anything aside from the serpent. He said the monster was tamed, so the owner is here as well. We might be in trouble. I only know a single person strong enough to tame such a monster, but from what I know, he doesn’t possess water magic.

“Prepare for impact, we’re up against two monsters; the serpent and its owner. Ishikawa try and get into close combat. The owner is a magician, most likely will not excel in sword fight, since he doesn’t show himself and attacks from a distance and using dark as cover.”

***NAOKO’S POV***

The people on the ship are quite strong. They had at least three magicians that are strong, maybe even more, to be able to stop the combined attack of Triton and me. As a fellow fighter you have earned my respect.

“Triton, change of plans, we’re attacking head on, but this time they will not be able to escape our grasp. I’m going to give them a huge gift that will leave them speechless and most likely without a way back to land.”

“Devil woman you are ssscaring me, but I guess I will go along with your plan.”

“Hehe, time to hitch a ride for a bit.”

***VITOU’S POV***

It became quiet once again. I didn’t like this, as it kept me on edge all the time. Whoever this person is, his power is far above the norm. I don’t know where he was kept hidden all this time, but having such an expert with unclear motivation near my kingdom was making me nervous.

“Nakamura speak to me where are they?”

“Your Highness the serpent is still below us just staying there and waiting.”

That is weird, is it waiting for an order of the owner to attack or something else? The ice barrier that stopped its attack had shattered so why isn’t it going for the ship?

“Can you sense the other person, the one that tamed this monster?”

“I am sorry Your Highness, but the presence of the serpent is simply too strong and it is overshadowing everyth…”

All of a sudden there was a huge ripple in the water and shook the boat violently making all of us lose our balance for a second, even interrupting Nakamura in his report. For a second, I thought there was another attack, but aside from this ripple there was absolutely nothing else going on. Even the unnatural stillness of water stopped and small waves began swaying the ship slightly.

I had a bad feeling all of a sudden. I turned to Nakamura to ask what was going on when I saw his pale and confused face and I knew things weren’t looking good for us.

“What is wrong?”

He looked a bit hesitant, but after a slight pause he answered

“You Highness, the serpent, it is gone!”
