CHAPTER 14 – MAGIC AND STRAWBERRIES

I decided it was high time to start some heavy experimentation with my magic and just what exactly are the limits. Since there aren’t that many records regarding spirit and dark magic, besides the most common use, I made up my mind to use my extensive otaku knowledge and try out as many things as possible.

First up was enchanting things. I thought since I could use debuffs with Dark Magic I
could maybe use buffs as well. I asked some people about Light Magic being able to do it, but it was not possible since it was only for purification and healing.

In the beginning I tried it on myself but I couldn’t do it, just like I couldn’t curse myself. Then I went to find some goblins and sure enough as soon as I cast magic on them I got a new notification. I didn’t think about this much, but this world is oddly similar to a game. This is another thing I need to ask Thanatos-sama if I see him again.

I kept messing with this newly discovered effect and realized that I it is really similar to Curse magic, only reverse, but mana usage is higher. When I felt happy about my performance, I got rid of the goblins and prepared to test the one magic I wanted the most.

It was Spirit Magic, I was bothered as to why the spirit magic was by far the rarest of them all, and even considered weakest. I looked at some records in the guild and realized that among six magic types from Earth to Dark the occurrence is pretty much the same and I assumed that power between them is the same, although that is not the general opinion. My hope was laying in my theory that Spirit Magic is rare because it is extremely powerful.

The most pressing matter to check about it is the existence of elementals, or spirits of nature. If they exist in this world, and if I can find a way to communicate with them, I would be able to open a whole new leaf for myself. I took a deep breath calming myself and began my chant.

“Come forth Elementals… I am the one wielding Magic of Spirits. I call upon you to answer and in return I shall offer you my mana. Heed my words and appear.”

Uwah, this is so embarrassing. Since I used such sentence it would definitely activate my unique [Chuunibyou] skill. Maybe it might have some effect on helping me get some elementals to show up.

I didn’t forget to pour out my mana to act as bait. I also had my spirit sense activated at maximum level just in case.

“Fumu… this human has such a strong voice and that mana looks so delicious… I can’t resist.”
“I’m sleepy.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Soon over a dozen tiny creatures appeared. They
all had different shapes. A bug, a bird, a flower, a stone… and all of them were extremely wary of me. Just like that, I felt that I was running out of mana and felt dizzy. I couldn’t believe how much mana they were taking from me considering they were so small.

[Class: Elementalist has been unlocked.]

“Human you are weak but your mana is delicious.”
“Why did you call Human?”

“I am sorry for bothering you all if you have been resting but I wanted to introduce myself to all of you here. I am Naoko, you may call me like so or even Nao if you want to. I hope that in the future we will be able to get along and work together helping each other. Since I am still weak I might not be able to help you as much but I will do my best.”

It all depended on their answer now. If I could gain their approval it would mean I would have access to magic of all elements. However the difference would be that I needed to use them as proxy which meant that if they didn’t feel like doing anything I wouldn’t be able to use that magic.

Finally it was decided that they don’t mind lending a hand if they feel like doing it. This was more than enough for me at the moment. This way I will have a ton of opportunities to get them to warm up to me.

Since this seemed really important immediately inspected it.

[EL.AFF] – degree of elements affection towards you. Increase for better communication and lesser mana consumption.

This is a stat I must work hard to increase. It was also similar to LUK stat since I couldn’t allocate points to it. Now that this was done I went to experiment some more.

I wanted to try detaching my consciousness and spirit possession but I was not yet at this point. The other thing I had in mind for today was trying out Summoning Magic. This was something of a gray area since I didn’t know exactly how to categorize it. After almost four hours of trying I admitted defeat. I simply had no idea what was all needed to complete a summon magic.

Despite the defeat I felt happy about my discoveries today. With a skip in my walk I
returned to the town. It was already dusk and most shops were already closed. As I passed through the empty farmers market, I noticed a thin girl not older than 10 years selling something, but everyone was either ignoring her or shouting insults.

Curious about her I went over and saw she had a small bag full of strawberries. So far I have not come across them in this world. I had long made peace that I will never again eat them again, so seeing her selling them made me extremely happy.

“Hey there, how much is for all these?”

She was surprised when I asked her. Now that I was closer to her I realized that not only she was thin but she also looked pale. She must be poor.

“This Red Forest Fruit? I must warn you it is not very cheap since you can’t easily find it, but I assure you the taste is extremely good and sweet. Since it is still really early in the year you can’t find much and this bag is all I have. Since you are my first customer I will give it to you with a discount for only 45Lyr.”

“Hou, is that so. Did you collect all this yourself? It must have been hard.”

“My friends helped me. You can only eat this in season so it is a limited item. I just have a hard time selling it since people don’t want to buy what they don’t know.”

“In that case I will buy it. Here is 50Lyr, take it and share it with friends. Also next time you collect them you can come to me directly. I am staying in Azure Dragon. If I am not there tell Mylene-san and she will buy them for me.”

The little girl was smiling upon hearing my words. When I heard her call strawberries Red Forest Fruit I knew why I couldn’t find them on the market. People here deemed that anything that comes from the forest is not safe and refused to eat it.

“Nee-chan you are the best. Next time I will definitely bring it to you. My name is Ronda, if you ever have time come to West Town Hall. I will show you the best place to eat.”

The West Town was somewhat poor part of the town. It wasn’t as distinct as one might
think but you could see that the standard was not the same. Bidding goodbye to her I went back to my room.
