CHAPTER 218: PANIC IN THE CITY

The three weeks of freedom had passed in a blur and tomorrow is supposed to be the day we all set off for Vilikis. There was the small issue of the Archduke joining our party, or at least he was supposed to join, but for some reason he is nowhere to be found. I really didn’t mind it, but Vitou looked angry and frustrated.

I don’t get it, what’s the big deal. It’s him that we are talking about. As far as I am concerned he will just appear before we set off and act like nothing is wrong. Either way, there is absolutely no need to get worried about this all.
During this time Mia became a full member of Dragon’s Descent. It didn’t even take two weeks before she begged me to accept her. She really enjoys spending time with monsters who were all oddly attached to her. I was worried they would no longer care about other members, but contrary to my belief, the owners/tamers were able to get even closer to them, especially if they are in their presence when Mia is around.

Just last week a group brought back two albino baby wyverns that were in terrible state, most likely because they were abandoned after suffering an injury. After some discussion with Dogusu and the rest, I decided to give both of them to Mia. And I had two strong reasons to do that.

First it was because I wanted Mia to become a tamer and a monster user to see if that will unlock some special skill or title that would explain why she has such an effect on monsters. And secondly because I was sure she would take the best care of the two sibling wyverns. I knew that albino animals tend to have more problems in the wild and are more prone to illnesses, but with Mia taking care of them, they would be able to grow up strong and healthy. I was certain of it.

When I told Mia about it she was so thrilled that she immediately ran to the den to meet them. And sure enough, not even an hour later she got the taming skill, unlocked the monster tamer subclass and also monster handling skills. Both skills were at LV7 upon unlocking which was a shock to everyone, but it further confirmed my hunch about her being special. I think she will become an unstoppable force in the near future.

I should probably mention that the Dungeon on the Red Lake stabilized and the King returned three days ago, which meant that Vitou was no longer swept with work and in turn was more free to follow me around much to my dissatisfaction. The King was happy about it, but I wasn’t. Also, I wasn’t able to see the Queen ever since I got back. All I heard that she was feeling ill and that she moved to the Southern Villa.

Anyways, that brings us back to the present. I have completely restocked on food, cleaned up the entire inn, prepared the clothes for travelling and meeting the Royal Family of Vilikis. I felt everything was ready. Now I just need a good night’s sleep to be fresh tomorrow for a long journey south.

I woke up and realized it was still dark outside, but the commotion outside the castle was not something you would expect in the middle of the night. I checked the map, but I couldn’t see any enemies. In fact, aside from several servants running around the hallways I couldn’t sense anything else.

I didn’t bother looking into it further and decided to go back to sleep. Since there are no enemies whatever it is I’ll let them handle it. There are enough capable people in this place to deal with whatever may be causing this commotion.

“Naoko-chan, wake up! We need to go now!”

Mia was in my room throwing blankets off of me and literally dragging me outside. She looked panicked and flustered.
“Hold on a minute, what’s going on? What made you panic?”

“It’s bad, there is a fire rampaging in the city, magicians can’t put it out nor control it. It is on its way here, so hurry up and leave!”

Oh, now that she said it, it does smell like something is burning. I should probably do something about it. I can’t have fire reaching the headquarters if it didn’t by now.

“Come fire elementals, I offer you my mana in exchange for your help. Please take care of that fire. Water elementals, I implore you, gather and bring forth the rain to extinguish the fire burning down the city.”

I really wanted to sleep some more. Why does stuff like that always happen when I don’t want to be bothered. Jeez, this is not some novel so that things keep on happening whenever I am near. Take a break, world, no need to be exciting all the time.

“Naoko-chan, hurry up!”

“It’s fine, no need to go anywhere. It will all be over soon. They took almost all my mana so there is no way it won’t be subdued. Go look outside if you don’t believe me, I will be going back to sleep.”

I crawled back into the bed and put the covers over my head and went back to sleep.

***ERIK’S POV***

This is terrible, a fire like this can only be done by someone or something with extremely high affinity over it. If it were otherwise, this would have been extinguished a long time ago.

“Father, we must evacuate. Nobody can control it, even Daisuke can’t do it for long. He says it is because of the Blessing of Fire or something like that.”

“So someone with a title is doing this, no wonder we can’t do anything about it. Sound the evacuation bell… no wait, something is wrong.”

The fire that was raging suddenly stopped spreading. I could also feel the pressure in the air dropping as clouds started gathering and heavy rain came falling down. The wild fire was being extinguished by mere rain. The same fire that our best magicians couldn’t put out.

“There is no need for the alarm, Vitou, it looks like the gods are favoring us tonight.”

“I don’t think it is gods, but I will take it.”

I looked at my son and saw him staring at the west wing of the castle. Hehe, maybe it wasn’t god, but a rather grumpy woman that had her sleep interrupted. I pity those that spent a long time planning this attack.
