CHAPTER 232: SUDDEN COMMOTION

***VITOU’S POV***

It was strange seeing how well Naoko was behaving, but the actions of the Royal Family were even stranger. This type of banquet was not something you see every day. I heard that the second princess was in charge, but why was this change allowed? Also the invitation presentation still hasn’t been done. I couldn’t help but have the feeling like there was someone intentionally making this invitation presentation ceremony delayed, but since nobody present was complaining about it, I didn’t want to bring up this point either.

When the Princess made the toast I was worried Naoko would try and do something, but even then, she behaved even gave a toast in return. When the performers arrived, she just watched them silently slowly sipping her wine. It seems that she really had no idea to cause any commotion tonight. I could finally relax a bit.

As soon as I thought that, I heard coughing next to me and the smell of blood hit me. I turned to look at Naoko, only to see her collapsing. Without thinking I reached out and caught her while calling out to her.

“Nao-chan?! Naoko, wake up!”

I checked and saw she was still breathing, but from the corner of her mouth I could see blood trickling. Even the handkerchief in her hand was dyed red. I kept trying to see what happened, but just a minute ago she was perfectly fine. Why did she collapse all of a sudden? Gods, please let her be fine at this moment.

All of this caused a huge commotion in the hall. Screams were sounded out from those closer to us and soon more and more people came closer to see what was going on.

“Nao-chan, don’t play tricks on me like this! Wake up! Do you hear me?! Someone get the doctor!”

I saw a maid run out as soon as I called for the doctor. For a second, I thought this was all her own devising, but she was entirely unresponsive. If it weren’t for her shallow breathing, I would have thought she was dead. I looked at the Archduke, but he only shook his head. This meant that during this time Naoko didn’t use any skill or magic to make herself like this. Why is she like this?

There was one more thing that shocked me, but also made me certain this was not an act. The reaction her dragon was showing was abnormal. He was among the first ones to arrive here and he was furious. His eyes turned into slits and there were scales starting to show up on his face, neck and arms.

“Whoever dared to mess with this dragon’s person can forget his life!”

“Where is the doctor? Why isn’t he here yet?”

I was really worried about her at this time. Daisuke and Taichi were already here and they were clearing away the crowd to give us more space. Mia soon joined them and helped out as well. However, the biggest effect that had on the crowd backing away was when Fulgur showed his wings and tail. I could see just how unstable his emotions were at this moment.

“Everyone calm down! Nobody is to leave the hall until we discover what happened. The doctor is on his way. Vitou, today’s matter, I will ensure that you have a culprit.”

“He isn’t the only one that needs an explanation.”

Fulgur was exerting his pressure on everyone around him. Even I had trouble standing next to him. The only person remaining unaffected was the Archduke who only showed slight signs of confusion on his face.

“The doctor is here.”

A doctor followed by a maid that I saw running out came and immediately he started checking Naoko’s pulse. He opened her eyes and used light magic to check her complexion. He then cast healing magic, but still nothing happened.

“Doctor, what is wrong with Naoko?”

I asked, but there was no reply from him. Instead he took out a set of needles and started poking them all over Naoko’s body. When he took out some of them black ooze started seeping out of her. I never saw such a method of treatment. Usually, everyone would just cast healing magic and wait for the person to wake up. This made me suspicious of this man.

“To reply to Your Highness, Lady Naoko had come in contact with poison. Please allow me to check more things before I determine what kind of poison it was.”

Someone dared to poison her under my watch?! I want to know who is that brave.

“Nakamura, find the poison. I don’t care if you have to strip everyone, just give me the culprit.”

“Yes, Your Highness.”

“Archduke, do you have any ideas? Why aren’t you worried? She’s your sister for heaven’s sake!”

He still looked as relaxed as ever albeit somewhat confused. He kept looking towards the maid that came with the doctor as if trying to see through her. I wondered if that maid had anything to do with Naoko’s situation, but she never left her position near the gate and moreover, she never came close to Naoko. It was only a moment later that he sighed and shook his head looking almost amused. I couldn’t comprehend what he meant. Is the maid guilty or not? Why is he acting like this?

“She won’t die. It seems that this time she didn’t need to do anything because someone already did everything for her. She will wake up soon. Just give it an hour or two at most. The culprit has already been found.”

He glanced at the table where the Royal Family was sitting. Before I could ask what he meant by that Nakamura called out.

“Your Highness, there is poison in this wine!”

He held the cup that was in front of Naoko’s seat and I immediately realized what the Archduke meant a moment ago.

“Princess Zimo, how do you explain this?!”
