CHAPTER 249:
***VITOU’S POV***
I stared at the closed door for a long time before I finally was able to move my feet and return to my room. When I came earlier I steeled my will and decided to look at her in the eyes when I asked her about her plans. It took all my willpower not to get lost in them, but her small action completely stunned me. Was that really my Nao-chan just now? How come she seemed so different? There was no screaming, no disdain and no pretentiousness. Did she eat something wrong today?
And that action at the end? I raised my hand and touched my cheek while my lips raised in a smile. I am not dreaming, right? She really gave me a kiss just a moment ago? Hehe, I guess my charm isn’t as dead as I thought it was. I was actually starting to doubt if the claims of all those noble ladies were true or just mere flattery.
“Your Highness, is everything alright?”
“Nakamura? When did you get here?”
The sudden appearance of Nakamura and Ishikawa snapped me out of my daydreams. I had no idea when the two of them arrived in my room. Who knows how long I have been dazed for?
“Boss, you have been out of it for half an hour. What did Naoko do to you to make you like this? If you want us to take revenge on your behalf, I am sorry, but I wish to live a long life.”
I shot him a glare. Even though he is a hero, he is still my subordinate. He should be so laid back and instead act accordingly. I’ll make him suffer a bit once we’re back in Kapitalia, that will teach him more respect.
“Why are you here now? It is late. Whatever needs to be said, say it tomorrow.”
“Don’t you want to know more about what happened yesterday?”
Now that caught my attention. That man from yesterday is not simple. Just by standing next to him I could feel the pressure and fear of death. He is someone that you want to stay away from. If I am correct, he should be the adoptive father of Nao-chan, but there should be more to him than that.
“What did you find out? Tell me everything.”
“First, there is no doubt that the King had malicious thoughts towards Naoko and the person behind him was Princess Zimo. From our spies in the castle I learned that she was always maligning Naoko in front of the King, making him have a bad impression of her. She wasn’t the one to suggest giving that gift, but was directly involved as to why it was given out despite being a family heirloom.”
Hah, they are really courting death. I can’t wait to see their faces two days later. I waited for the rest of the report.
“I was unable to see the properties of the item that caused the incident with Naoko-san, but according to the reactions of that man and the Archduke, I can conclude everything they said is true. Also, there is no harm done to Naoko-san whatsoever and any unwanted consequences are nonexistent.
“I already know that. What about that man? What did you learn about him?”
I saw him hesitate. I think my guess is correct and he couldn’t get any information on him. Just like the Archduke, it will be impossible to learn anything.
“Your Highness, I’m afraid I will have to disappoint you. It was impossible to get a normal reading of the information regarding him.”
I looked at him curiously. He seemed to have been able to find out something, but was reluctant to say it.
“Do I have to remind you of your position right now? Speak, what do you find out about that man?”
“Your Highness, it is not that I don’t want to say it, but the words are too blasphemous and just saying them could brand me as heretic.”
“Speak!”
I used pressure to coerce him into speaking. He was still much weaker than I am and for a few more years I could do this, but I don’t think it will be forever. Until then, he has no choice.
“Yes, Your Highness. When I looked at his information I saw the following: “You f*cker, dare to peep at this Great One. I will shove a stake up your a*s. You will wish that you died that day on Earth. Hmph, those twelve bastards only know how to cause trouble. This time I will let you off because I was able to meet my most adorable, cute, smart Nao-chan, but if you meet those twelve dimwits, tell them unless they want to keep their jobs, they should stop acting so unruly. I warned them once, but it seems they are turning a deaf ear to me.”
Is this a joke? The fact heroes have to die in their previous lives to arrive here is a secret known only to a few people. How can he be aware of it? Moreover, I am pretty sure those twelve he mentioned are the twelve gods of this world. Isn’t he afraid of retribution? I could understand Nakamura’s worry, if such words were spoken and overheard, he really could be branded as a heretic. Especially without knowing the context behind those words.
“Is this really what you saw? Does that man know about your ability? But there shouldn’t be anyone aside from the three of us that know it. Even Nao-chan doesn’t know how it works.”
“I am not sure either. If he knows my status, it could be possible to be aware of it and counter it. But I saw this message as soon as he appeared. He didn’t even look at me the entire time he was there.”
I remained silent, contemplating on who that man really is. There are simply way too many secrets about him, the Archduke and Nao-chan. I was about to send the two of them away when Ishikawa spoke up.
“Boss, before the twelve gods became gods, who was in charge?”
This simple question made me stunned. His words, however, made me feel dreadful as if some unspeakable secret is about to be uncovered.
