CHAPTER 253: ESCAPING THE KINGDOM

“My bride! What is wrong? I feel something is blocking my connection with you.”

The first one to arrive was Fulgy. I had no idea what was going on. The pain was not subsiding. It was even worse than the overload of information I get from killing monsters in large numbers. I waved my hand to tell him not to worry, but he didn’t believe me and held me in his arms and began massaging my temples.

It was also at this moment that everyone else arrived. They wanted to cast magic onto me, but I stopped them. The headache suddenly stopped and I could see countless images flash inside my head.

“Nobody move, don’t make a sound,”

I yelled out and concentrated on those images. It took me a moment to realize it was the record that my gift to three Black Hand members saved. I could see everything that happened in the past few months. Considering the pain I just felt, the item must have been destroyed, or someone tried to trace the magic back to me through that time. If my guess is correct, then we are in danger.

“Did you figure something out?”

I looked at the Archduke who was not worried at all. He only seemed curious about the situation, unlike the rest of my party members.

“We need to leave, fast. I think some ‘family’ members might come here soon. It is better to avoid that troublesome bunch.”

His eyes flashed a trace of hatred that I never noticed before. I didn’t let them dilly-dally and chased them out of the room to pack a few essentials before I stored the Lost Inn in my inventory and left the area as soon as possible.

What I didn’t know is that less than half an hour later, two figures clad in gray robes appeared at that same area before disappearing a few moments later.

Right now, I was resting on Fulgy’s back as we were flying back to Elicia. I was digesting everything that I learned today. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find out where the main base for the group was, nor was I able to see any of the key figures that belong to it. The only person I recognized was the man the Archduke called Earl, the same one that saved the Black Baron when I was about to defeat him at the gates of Kapitalia. It was also him that saw through my item and broke it. The last thing that I received from the crystal is him calling for the Black Duke.

The trio I met before was able to pass the test of promotion and were about to be rewarded when all of this was discovered. I don’t know what their outcome will be, but none of that has anything to do with me. We were standing on opposing sides from the very beginning. It doesn’t matter if we are adopted siblings. Even the Archduke has no good feelings about Black Hand.

“My bride, there is trouble at the border. Do you want to skip it, or do you want to get involved?”

Huh, did he say the border? How is that possible? I opened my eyes and saw that the sun was setting. I was stunned for a moment. Did I fall asleep without even realizing it? I thought for a moment and decided to go through customs the regular way. In other words, I was sticking my nose into this.

“Head down, we did nothing wrong. Going through customs will lessen suspicions against me once they discover the Royal Treasury is empty.”

Fulgy landed and soon everyone was gathered together. We approached the border pass and stopped a few people to learn about the situation and what the commotion is all about.

“What is going on? Why is everyone standing around and not passing?”

“You arrived at a bad time. A few hours ago the border was suddenly closed. From what I learned someone had killed a guard and used undead magic on him. The corpse was destroyed and the investigation is still ongoing. I was about to change directions and move west. Who knows how long this will take, I can’t afford to lose too much time. I suggest you try some other pass as well.”

Someone died? I thought this was about our theft. But why would anyone use Necromancy in plain sight? Or is this a way to stop anyone from leaving the country. If that is the case, it is a stupid way to do it. If someone wants to leave, it would be so easy, all you have to do is go through the woods. It’s not like there are surveillance cameras or satellite images that will catch people crossing the border. I think there must be something more to it than meets the eye.

“In that case, I wish you a safe journey. Thank you for telling us, but we will try our luck here.”

I stuffed a few coins into his hands and moved further away to set up my inn. I decided to stay here and wait while also earning a few more coins. I can also use this time to see what is going on.

It didn’t take long before all the rooms were filled with guests, but the profit did not make me happy at all. It is all because one of the guests that checked in was the Black Baron I fought before. I didn’t think I would see him here of all places. When he appeared in front of me, I wanted to make a move immediately and arrest him and present him to the guards, but when I realized he didn’t recognize me, so I stopped-

I was surprised, we fought hard enough and he suffered a huge defeat in my hand to a point where he needed to be saved. So how come he doesn’t recognize me? I acted like a proper inn proprietress and gave him accommodation, but as soon as he was out of sight and the inn had no more vacancies, I called everyone to the conference room to discuss our further actions.

I made sure to activate the soundproofing barrier I had pre-installed in this room while also putting my own and asking Mia and Daisuke to do the same. If my hunch is correct, there should be someone much stronger than the Black Baron watching over him and protecting him and I don’t want him discovering what we are discussing. They were suspicious of my actions, but followed nonetheless.

“Okay, now that everything is set up, I have something to tell all of you. Please stay calm and don’t overreact. As of right now all of the rooms in the inn have been occupied, while this is not a big deal a single person among the guests might cause you to panic. In the last VIP room on our floor a member of Black Hand is currently residing.”
