CHAPTER 27: A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS

Do you ever feel like the whole world has turned against you? Sometimes, no matter how hard you try you cannot succeed. That is how I have felt ever since that day I summoned Daphira. I even asked her if she had such an effect on the world since she was a divine beast, but she denied wholeheartedly. She told me that her only effects are: knowing when someone is near death and showing lifelike illusions when attached to them.

The things that were happening to me slightly affected my work as an adventurer. As a D-rank adventurer I would often go to neighboring towns for monster subjugations only to find that there were no such monsters in the area or have already been killed by passing travelers.

That would result in either cancellation or failure of taken request. But that was not all that happened. One time I was walking down the street shopping for some spices and food when a flower pot fell from a second story window and nearly hit me. And then the same thing happened again not even ten minutes later.

The other time I was practicing my sword skills in the forest when a monster horde of
about forty of them suddenly attacks me. It was really odd to see them grouped up like that since all those species that attacked were known as solitary type monsters. I immediately looked for any other presences but nobody was there.

But aside from monster attacks the worst possible place for me was the forest. If it wasn’t for Daphira I would be dead already. Every time I took a walk in the forest unexplained things occurred. Trees would suddenly fall down trying to crush me, pitfalls would appear under my feet and monster traps would appear wherever I went.

I was certain that all this was, by no means accidental, and someone was trying to kill me, but no matter how hard I tried to find them I couldn’t detect anything about them.

The worst case was yesterday. I was out of town when a huge storm caught me. The amount of lightning that was concentrated in my vicinity was oddly suspicious to me, so I decided to call upon all the lightning elementals that were present around me to act as a shield and absorb any lightning that would hit me. This turned out to be a good call because, as soon as I began walking back home several dozen lightning bolts launched at me, but luckily never
reached me.

And now here I am standing in front of a giant bear. This should be a C-ranked monster that has strong wind affinity. It was also accompanied with another 30 monsters, mostly wolves and foxes each with strength of D-rank.

“Okay, here’s the deal Bear-san. I do not want to fight you and kill you, so could you please leave right now. I will leave you alone as long as you leave me alone. I am already in a bad enough mood to deal with you.”

The bear only growled and I was immediately rushed by all the monsters. Taking out my sword I met them head on and casted magic to slow them or bind them. Their attack seemed odd to me, just like the previous group that attacked me.

D-rank monsters dropped down one after another, after all I was a tad bit stronger than your average adventurer of my rank. However the problem I was having was with the Wind Bear. It had a tough hide and his attack was very sharp. I dare say he was stronger by a large margin than any other monster here. I had to attack him several times to even injure him a bit and that was when I was aiming at his eyes ears and snout which should be weak points.

However this only made him furious. I kept on attacking but only was able to leave minor injuries. It was time for a change of plans.

“Come fire elementals, I offer you my mana in exchange for your help. Heed my word
and burn the opponent from the inside.”

The elementals gathered around happily dancing around me as they took my mana. Lately they have become much more relaxed in my presence. It didn’t take long and the bear soon dropped dead on the ground. He had no way to defend against my attack.

[You have received 1245 EXP from Wind Bear.]

I heaved a sigh and collected his corpse along with other animals. I should just go home and research some evil warding spells, I was tired from all this stuff happening to me.

[SKILL: Presence Detection LV10]
[SKILL: Aura Detection has been learned.]

Great maybe now I will be able to learn something new. I immediately activated it but I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary. Well I didn’t expect much from LV1 hopefully as it grows stronger I will be able to do more with this skill.

Once I was back in town I headed towards the guild when a brick from the roof of the house missed me by an inch thanks to Daphira’s warning. I looked at the smashed brick with the help of [Aura Detection] and sensed just a wisp of a Dark Green almost poisonous aura on it. I tossed it in my inventory and entered the guild.

“Welcome back Naoko-san, you look rather tired. Did something happen again?”

“Nino-san I can’t stand this anymore! Do you know how many times I avoided death in the past two weeks? Heck even today. I swear the world itself is trying to kill me.”

Everyone at the guild was aware of my bad luck. Several of them witnessed my walk in the storm where I was being hit by countless lightning.

“That will not continue forever, I am sure of it. So what was it this time?”

“A Wind Bear and a monster group, the only good thing about it is that I can earn some
extra cash and experience.”

I dumped the corpses at dismantling building and Grant-san did not complain for a change. In fact he seemed really eager to work, although it only seemed excited for the bear.

***NINO’S POV***
-DAY OF THE STORM

The weather had turned ugly, and thanks to that the work will most likely go slow since
people won’t be doing any work. The thundering outside was getting louder with every passing minute. I just hope everything will be fine outside.

“Nino-san… it is terrifying! Naoko-sama! Lightning!

“Millie-chan calm down, speak normally what happened. Do you want to sit down, let me make you some tea so you calm down easier.”

“No time… Naoko-sama, she is walking down the street and she keeps on getting hit by lightning. It is terrible!”

I was shocked. That day all the adventurers and staff of the guild present witnessed a
magnificent sight of Naoko-san being struck by countless lightning bolts but never getting hurt.

From that day onwards you can hear some people addressing Naoko-san as a Lightning Queen, although Naoko-san was not that happy when she heard about it.
