CHAPTER 278: THE DAY OF THE TEST

Much to Vitou’s dissatisfaction, I couldn’t recover from being dazzled by the six men that showed up today. I was still in a dreamy state, even after they were settled in their rooms. I had no idea where they got such people, but if the other six are anything like them, I will let my eyes feast on the beauty tomorrow.

“Nao-chan, can you please control yourself? I am still here. At least pretend you are not drooling over them in front of me. I am, after all, your fiancé.”

“Don’t blame me, Vitou, I have always been weak in front of handsome men and women, I want to admire them. It’s not easy to see such a group of fine men on a daily basis.”

He could only admit defeat in front of me and send me back to my room. There was a dinner planned for tonight that I wanted to attend, but was forbidden from doing so. I was denied entry for not being a member of the Church. Even when I disguised myself as a servant, I got caught and delivered back to my room.

I could only give up and go to sleep. If I want to see them, I will have to wait until tomorrow. At that time, I will make sure to have my fill of beautiful people. Vitou and the Heroes that I see from time to time are all eye-candies, but these men are on another level.

Once again, I awoke to the sight of a dozen maids waiting to help me get ready, but this time around, I was expecting it. Letting myself be tossed around by them, I began daydreaming and looking forward to the upcoming test.

“Why are you still in a daze? I thought you would calm down by now. I’m starting to get worried that I can’t keep you and will run away when the first handsome man appears. Nao-chan, you should comfort me.”

“Vitou, you should know by now; I’m running away even if nobody appears. I’m not hiding anything. If the Archduke wasn’t here to make sure I would show up, I would have disappeared a long time ago.”

“That does not count as comforting someone.”

I shrugged and continued to endure the dressing up. When Vitou arrived, I was not surprised. Today is an important day, so he will make sure I show up on time and be presentable.

“Actually, I’m here to inform you about a slight change of plans. Last night a brand new procedure for the test was proposed. I don’t know who leaked the information, but the Church knows that you have a god patron that is not among the Twelve Gods.”

“So, what’s the big deal? I thought the test was the same regardless of who takes it, as long as they don’t belong to the Church.”

I don’t know why there is a need to change things. Why did Vitou run here so early to inform me? Could it be that it will not be easy to obtain the approval now?

“There are two major changes. First, you will be interrogated by the twelve Archbishops to ensure you do not worship a heretic god. I tried to stop them, but my father agreed almost immediately and even offered to use the Sword of Light. You will be inconvenienced today.”

Oh brother, what an annoyance. I wouldn’t be surprised if the King was the one who told the Church those rumors. I just don’t know if he made a wild guess that turned out to be correct, or does he know something he didn’t know others were aware of.

“It’s whatever. I have a way to go against the Sword of Light. I already used this method before, so this ‘interrogation’ will not pose a problem to me. What’s the other change that you mention?”

As long as I tell partial truth, I won’t be subjected to the punishment of the Sword. What I don’t want to say, there is nothing that can make me say it.

“This is something that I strongly objected to, but all twelve Archbishops agreed unanimously to implement it. Even though I am the Crown Prince, but my influence in the Church is not that big. That is why I couldn’t make them revoke the decision.”

I saw him avoiding the answer and giving excuses. Something tells me this second change is not good. At least not good for me, otherwise he wouldn’t be unwilling to tell me.

“Just spit it out. What is the other change? Don’t test my patience.”

“They decided to hold the trial in public. Everyone is free to come and see the process.”

Sh*t! I don’t mind taking the test, but I don’t want to become entertainment for others. If everything is done in a castle with only a handful of people present, I wouldn’t be worried. But now…

“Are they planning on publicly shaming me and using me as an example to other non-believers? Or are they treating me as a tool to promote themselves?”

Either way, I don’t like it. I must be careful and not fall into their traps.

“I really don’t know, but before I got here, I found out this is something that had been planned some time ago. The arena was reserved two months ago just for this event.”

“It looks like someone is pulling strings behind our backs and they don’t want the two of us to get married. I want to know who it is, but I don’t like them doing things without my knowledge.”

The only one I could think of was the King, but it didn’t make much sense. I mean, he’s the one that wanted the two of us to get married. Whoever this person is, he is one scary individual to be able to move the Church.

“It appears so. I was able to prevent several messengers from going out with the notice from my father about the event. However, there was nothing I could do about the Church.”

“It’s fine, you did enough. Leave it to me. I’ll make sure to not give them a cause to slight me.”
