CHAPTER 288: A FORGOTTEN HERO
“You are not the only one that wants the other to give in. I find that your little trick is quite useful to me. How about we fight a few more rounds? I am still not ready to give up the benefits that you can give me.”
Although I didn’t expect to get anything from this item, the new skill came at a good time. This means that I will need to spend less time to acquire the levels for it, if I focus wholeheartedly on training. After all I do have a title that allows me to gain proficiency faster when I focus on training something.
“You are the first person that dared to control me even after getting close to death on several occasions. I can’t tell if you are brave or just plain stupid.”
“A bit of both, when it comes to gaining power that is. I can’t get stronger in a short time if I don’t risk things. I don’t know what to call you. I’m Naoko, by the way.”
I don’t know what this ‘person’ is nor how did it develop a consciousness inside an item, but I am certain that it is not a normal being. Otherwise, he would be just another soul screeching in the background. He would not be able to control everything inside this item. That is why I decided to try and talk to it and learn more about it. It will allow me to get a better grasp on how to deal with it and make it submit.
“Naoko, that sounds familiar. Are you by any chance a descendant of Heroes? I thought they would go back. I didn’t think they would settle down.”
“No, I came from Japan.”
If I am correct, he should be a past hero. He would not think that name is familiar unless he came from Earth. I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but from his tone of voice, that should be the case. However I don’t remember any heroes that would end up this way, unless he is counted as dead. In that case, I have a lot to choose from.
“So, another Hero. Tell me, what generation do you belong to? How much time had passed?”
“I never said I was a Hero, I only told you about Japan. For all that you know, there could be a country named like that in Doren. Are you a past Hero?”
“So, what did you do to make everyone despise you and not recognize you as a Hero? Don’t try tricking me. Nobody would dare name their place Japan. There are laws about it.”
This man is turning out more and more interesting. From what I can gather, he should have committed some big taboo or was framed by other heroes to carry such anger when mentioning heroes.
“Why would I tell you? So far you haven’t told me anything about yourself. Don’t you think sharing things is a good basis for building a better relationship?”
It seems that me not being a Hero is a good thing in this case. I can work with that, but I have to ensure that he is also willing to open up and tell me his story. If I get him on my side, I might as well get to use this item.
“I am a nobody, someone whose name is forbidden, so what is the point of telling you anything?”
“I don’t want to keep calling you with ‘you’. Besides, isn’t it nice to have someone to talk to after all this time? It seems that you were locked up here for a long time. Kinda boring and monotonous, isn’t it?”
“I guess you have a point there. Just call me Sai, it has been too long and there is no need for any honorifics.”
So, he’s definitely Japanese, but I don’t recall any heroes named Sai. I came across a book that had descriptions of all the past heroes and their achievements, but there was nobody named Sai or anything similar among them.
“It is a pleasure to meet you. Officially, that is.”
“You don’t seem as stuck up as the rest. So what year is it now back home? I bet the world has changed a lot from the time that I died back there.”
“It should be 2019. I don’t know how much it changed. At which period did you live in?”
“You’re joking, right? That is the year after I went missing as well.”
What? How can that be? Are all heroes that have been summoned from the 21st century Earth? Is this predetermined year of disappearance for all the people? It seems I have another question for Thanatos when I meet with him later on.
“So that’s it. Say why don’t the history books mention your name? You also said that it is forbidden. What’s your story? I really want to know; how did you end up inside this item?”
“That was a long time ago and the story is complicated. In short, I discovered something I shouldn’t have. When I shared it with my friends, they betrayed me and I became a wanted person by the church.”
That sounds like a story full of intrigue and thrill. But if he offended the Church, I can understand why there aren’t any historical records. Let’s hope that by the time he finishes his story, he will no longer attack me when I decide to use the item for my own gain.
“I want to know what you discovered. What if I come across the same thing and because I was unaware, I end up making the same mistake. I hope you would be able to enlighten me on what not to do when dealing with the church.”
“Fine, but first you must promise me one thing.”
There was a sense of determination coming from him. I knew that I had to make this promise if I were to gain his trust. That is why I agreed immediately, without even bothering to learn what it was that he wanted me to do.
“Good. It is a deal. No matter what you want, I will do it for you.”
