CHAPTER 73 – FLASHING LIGHTS AND INVISIBLE BATTLE

***HIIRO’S POV***

I lost against Earl Orzak in the quarterfinals .He was quite the nasty opponent, as I could not land a single strike on him no matter how fast or strong my attacks were. Just when I think I would get him, he would disappear right in front of my eyes. I could experience firsthand why
and how he got his nickname. It was a very frustrating fight for me.

“Hii-kun, will Naoko-san win?”

“Mai-chan, honestly speaking, I do not know. The Earl is a very strong person, but from my battle I simply cannot see Nao-chan winning this battle.”

“Don’t be so sure of it. She is still hiding her strength, by chance I was able to see her status earlier and according to her numbers she hadn’t gone all out in a single match this tournament. Not even against me, if she really did decide to do things efficiently I wouldn’t be able to cast a single spell. I have no idea how, but she learned how to break others’ magic before it is even launched. I think she did that to me already but it was with skill activation which should be even harder.”

I stared at Daisuke in disbelief. I heard how Nao-chan beat him earlier and suddenly felt chills down my spine. All that power and she is hiding even more. Truly monstrous, these days I feel like the quiet and clumsy Naoko that I knew on earth does not exist at all.

It was time, the King gave the signal for the beginning of the match, but nothing happened. The two of them, Nao-chan and Earl Orzak stood seemingly still in their positions looking as if they were completely focused on each other. Rather than a fighting match it was more of a staring contest.

The crowd was growing restless with every passing second. I could understand them; after all they came to watch a thrilling match, not a staring contest. It was then that I noticed something was off about this situation. Naoko’s right hand sleeve was soaked with blood and Earl Orzak had a cut on his cheek with several singed holes on his clothes.

Turning all my focus on the two of them, not daring to even blink, I finally realized what was going on. For just a moment the two of them seemed to flicker and immediately a small cut on Naoko’s clothes was open and another singed hole appeared on Earl Orzak.

“HOLY SHIT THEY’RE SO FAST!”

I couldn’t help but yell out in surprise. This caught the attention of many around me, but they all looked at me as if I was insane. However, I was not the only one that noticed the changes on the stage and soon everyone realized what had happened. The restlessness was very soon replaced with astonishment as the crowd watching became aware of just how fast the two of them were fighting.

“Hiiro-kun, please come with me, the King has summoned you to his area.”

King’s servant came to me. I had no idea what he wanted, but I knew better than to refuse an invitation from the king. Luckily I was not that far from the royal viewing stand. Bowing before the King and the Queen I remained a few paces away.

“Hiiro-kun, you have known Naoko-chan from even before coming to this place. Could you tell my just what kind of person she was before arriving here?”

So it is about Nao-chan. His eyes were glued to her battle not even bothering to look at me while speaking.

“Your Majesty, the Naoko-chan I knew was an introverted person and barely got out of being called a shut-in. Aside from school and occasional shopping trips she didn’t leave her house at all. The amount of times I had to literally drag her out for some leisure time was countless.”

Seriously, I had no idea how someone like that can turn into this battle maniac that she is right now. This will be a mystery for many generations to think about in the future.

“Is that really all?”

“Yes Your Majesty.”

“Then, how can you explain her being on par with the fastest person alive; one that was said to be unable to capture because as soon as you think you have him he vanishes and the next moment you are caught instead?”

I had no answer. I looked away to observe the battle. It seems to be growing more intense as they no longer remained in place but were flashing all over the stage and all you could see is sparks from where their weapons collided.

“If I knew the answer to that question maybe I would be able to grow stronger as well, Your Majesty. But right now all I can tell you is that this battle loving Naoko is someone I am completely unfamiliar with. It is to a point where I doubt whether this person is the same one I knew back on Earth.”

The creepiest thing about this fight is the fact that Nao-chan kept on smiling as if she was really enjoying this and was treating it like a game.

“If that is the case, I can actually give you an answer. Please forgive me Your Majesty for interrupting your conversation, but to answer your question there is a simple reason and also it was how I was able to use a sword from the very beginning, unlike other Heroes.”

“What do you mean Ishikawa-kun, did you also know Nao-chan? As far as I know, she didn’t have that many friends.”

Ishikawa never told us how he was able to wield a sword as soon as he grasped it. Whenever we asked him, the only answer we got was that he simply copied a great master.

“Taichi-kun do tell what you mean. Give me an explanation.”

“Firstly, I never met her in real life, but inside the game. You should know about it Hiiro, it is called Free World. Anyways inside that game Naoko-sama is something akin to a legend. She was a player that single handedly challenged and defeated five hundred opponents all on her own. She even caught the attention of game masters who used her battle clips to promote the game’s PvP events. She had a title in the game community ‘Calamity of Crown Colosseum’ as whenever she appeared there was only calamity for all the other players at the arena there.”

A game? Because she was playing a game she was able to turn into this battle maniac? But, she never showed any change whenever we hung out. My brain was refusing to believe what Ishikawa was saying so I turned my attention away from him and visibly frustrated King towards the stage where the fight was still ongoing.
