PROLOGUE – part I

I died. If I must say, it was quite a good way to go out. Saving a child from certain death would make anyone proud of giving up their life. Yeah right, I am super pissed right now. I was just on my way to buy the latest VR gear that came out for the most popular game called “Free World” and only to meet such an awful end. Life seriously sucks.

And yet here I am. But if you ask me where this is I have no idea. I was sitting in some garden still wearing bloodied clothes from the day I died. There were two more empty chairs beside the table I was sitting on. I assumed that more people would come but the more pressing issue is why am I alive in the first place. Just as I was wondering what was going on, out of nowhere a face I know all too well suddenly appeared in the chair next to me.

“Hii-Chan?! What on earth are you doing here?!”

“Nao-chan! Are you a complete idiot? What were you thinking running out in front of that  speedingtruck? I tried saving you, but from the obvious I failed.”

“Hii-chan, so cold. I tried to save a child from certain death. You don’t have to yell so loud. I am already feeling bad enough just by being dead.”

“What are you talking about? There was no child at all. You ran in front of a truck all by yourself. I know your situation is bad at home but that is no reason to commit suicide.”

He hadn’t seen a child there. Could I have really been mistaken and died in vain. And to top it all I caused HIi-chan to die as well. Well the day is turning from bad to worse.

“Please allow me to explain your situation to you Nakanishi Hiiro-kun and to offer an
apology to Maeda Naoko-san as well.”

A girl that looked like a grown up version of that child I tried to save walked out from the inner part of the garden and sat down at the last free chair.

“Who, who are you?! How do you know our names?”

“I am Rosa of the Holy Sword, one of the twelve guardians of Doren that oversee
everything about that world. Although my official title is that of a guardian you may call me a goddess like many others do as well.”

Could this be it? That famous reincarnation into another world with many overpowered
abilities and cheat skills. I can’t believe my luck, my time to shine has finally come. With my knowledge about Earth’s technology and all those books about magic I read and games I played it ought to be a piece of cake to sweep the world away with my power.

“Don’t speak bullshit! A goddess? As if I would believe that. I demand that you send us back immediately.”

“Hiiro-kun please calm down and let me explain. I am extremely sorry, but I cannot send  you back to Earth. Your existence has ceased there and you can never again return to your previous life. However, I made a small blunder, you see only one person was supposed to come here, and that was Hiiro-kun but I never expected that Maeda-san would die as well.”

Oh no I really did die in vain. Hearing that is a real bummer. But how cruel of a person
you must be to act all nonchalantly while talking about killing someone.

“Stop spouting nonsense and send us back!”

“I’m afraid that is impossible. The only thing I can do is let you reincarnate into my world or send your soul into the Otherworld where you would cease to exist for all eternity. But if I do  that all my effort would be in vain. Now Hiiro-kun please make your choice. To live in another world or to stop existing.”
Die for real or live in another world. There is not really much of a choice is it now. Well I knew my answer. And I was sure Hii-chan would choose the same.

“What kind of place is this Doren?”

“Compared to Earth it is much lower in hierarchy. There is magic and monsters living in that world and the civilization would be that of late middle ages and early renaissance. It is much different from what you are used to but overall it is a nice place with a lot of adventures to await you.”

Hearing her words my eyes gleamed in expectations. This is entirely like a light novel setting. A true fantasy world with dungeons and dragons, a world I would live in.

“In that case I will choose to live there. You haven’t given me much of an option you
know.”

“Me too! I will also choose to live there.”

Rosa-sama smiled upon hearing our words, but for some reason the moment I saw that face I felt chills running down my spine. Somehow I had a bad feeling about this.

“I am thrilled to hear that Hiiro-kun. First let me tell you why I brought you here. You see every so often us guardians of the world would gather and send our representatives to serve as heroes. The monsters are strong and people need hope to fight them, that is why we will send you there.”

“So Hii-chan and I will act as heroes there?”

“Well, you see I can only have a single representative and Hiiro-kun is the one most
suited to inherit that position. Someone with your looks… let’s just say you are unfit to represent me”

Come again? Did she just call me ugly in not so roundabout way. What happened to my
dream of living in another world? I do not want to die in Otherworld without anyone knowing of my existence. I didn’t sign up for this, you took me away from my world and I won’t be able to live in another one.

“Even if you don’t have a cheat skills and overpowered strength I will make sure you
aren’t living in a harsh world.”

My dreams, my cheat skill, my life… it is all gone.

“Don’t worry Maeda-san, I will send you to other guardians. If they don’t have a
representative they might take you to be their hero. With that farewell, I shall spend some alone time with my Hiiro-kun.”

She snapped her fingers and everything around me turned black. A strong pushing force hit me and I lost consciousness.
