I just couldn’t help myself but act in such a way. When I smiled at him gently in a gesture of apology, that man just stared at me.

I’m honestly starting to think that you’re the most dangerous creature here, something even scarier than monsters, demons and hardened criminals.

I guess it is partially true when he puts it like that, but instead of feeling angry at that remark I felt a slight tingling in my chest for some reason. Maybe because my body moved all on its own there. But if I tried to actually say that to him, I know he would just smile in a sour way and respond with: “And whose fault do you think it is?” Scary, those words and that tone would be downright scary.

So it’s my fault now?

No, I get what you were trying to say.

The man says in response to me and lets out another deep sigh. I’m terribly sorry for worrying him so much, but that’s the thing with women: once we make up our minds about something we won’t back down from it no matter what. Same with him – I would never give up on him, even if that meant making the whole world my enemy.

With that being done, I turned away from that man and looked towards Malena-sama, whom I tried to protect from the thug earlier. Even though she was attacked and taken hostage she seemed to be unharmed, but the look in her eyes was a clear indication that she didn’t really understand what just happened here. Then she, just like other guests, looked towards that man with a dumbfounded look on her face.

Soon enough, the whole garden and the courtyard was filled with quiet mutterings and feverish whispers.

What a terrifying thing to happen……!

I know that he’s a Hero, but I guess black hair will always be black hair.

Keep it quiet! What if he hears you? He might do the same to us as well.

All of the guests were trying to keep their voices down, but I could hear them perfectly. They were all talking about the same things, and hearing them made me want to bite down on my lip and grasp strongly at my sleeves in order to maintain my composure. Strangely enough, my heart was in far more pain than my bleeding arm. Gazing up at that man, he was wearing his usual expressionless expression. Seeing that was painful, compared to if he was showing that he was angry or sad.

Thanks to that man, this incident was resolved quickly and without anyone getting hurt in the process. And I don’t want to think what would have happened if Edi was not here in the first place.

It must have seemed easy to summon his staff in a split of a second without any incantation, and casting the spell with his own magical power rather than calling for the help of the spirit, but in reality it was a hard thing to do, and needed years of training and proper preparations. Of course, some dose of talent was also needed. And the reason he reacted like that was because he knew that this thug was posing a real threat here. I get that as well, but still. I grasped at that man’s sleeve so hard that my knuckles became white. He might be used to being looked upon with fear and scorn, but I couldn’t stand it. It was unbearable for me.

At the edge of my field of view I could see the guard that apprehended the thug had started to carry him away. Oh, so now you decided to show up, even though the security at the Marquis’s mansion should be more than enough to stop anyone from slipping in unnoticed? No matter how you look at it, it was a rather shameful display of incompetence from the guard’s side. When the commotion finally started to settle down, Lucius slammed his fist on the table.

L, Lucius-sama……?

Startled people called out to him and the Marquis himself also stood up. But Lucius disregarded all that and raised his voice out loud.

What the hell is wrong with all of you!?

His cheeks flushed red, his eyes looked to be filled with pure and genuine anger when he spoke the next words.

That man saved all of our lives just now, so you should be grateful to him! And what do you do!? You cower in fear from him and talk behind his back!

To the passionate words of Lucius, the vast majority of the guests looked away in embarrassment. Who would have thought that a young boy’s words could make such an impression? Then he got up from the table and approached that man and myself, looking us straight in the eyes and extending his hand towards us in a gesture of gratitude. It was a beautiful sight to behold, and a display of charisma and power that shouldn’t befit someone so young. We watched him in amazement, and Lucius continued in such a manner that his words could be heard by anyone who was present here.

I was watching you closely this whole time, and even though I can see that you are happy together, it’s the people and their behavior like that that I absolutely cannot stand! That being said, Nii-san, please come back home together with me!

Ha?

Eh?

Both that man’s and my voice were full of astonishment and surprise which overlapped splendidly. What was that just now? It took me a moment to actually comprehend that. While I was at a loss for words, that man looked as though he could not quite believe his ears. Contrary to our reactions, Lucius seemed to be quite pleased with himself for the current moment.

After that, the party was disbanded because of the atmosphere that suddenly took root amongst the guests. Honestly, I can hardly blame them for that. Before we left in our carriage I had the Marquis’s doctors treat the wound on my arm properly, and while we were going back home the atmosphere was less than pleasant. Lucius still seemed to be angry at the people at the party and that man was keeping silent, not wanting to willingly address the matter Lucius mentioned at the end. It was all making my stomach twist from stress and tension. Even though I had somehow become used to their beautiful features, seeing both of them look grumpy and angry at the same time was a sad sight to behold.

I was still trying to process the meaning of the words spoken by him back then: “Let’s go back home!”, and while I understood that he spoke those words with no ill intent behind them, I also understood that it wasn’t an offer that would be easy to just accept right off the bat. It cannot be helped that that man wasn’t going to give Lucius the answer right away.
