Volume 6 Chapter 3 Part 6

There are still a few more days left till the ritual to ask for the blessings of the water spirit. Teaching etiquette isn’t the only thing we need to do for the medium till then. Magic taught by Edi and politics taught by the youth Heinrich are important too. 

The man was meant to teach the boy magic, the day after I named the boy Snow and started giving lectures on basic etiquettes. Edi was in front of my eyes explaining the basics of spiritual magic and how borrowing power from the water spirit works. The medium was sitting on a chair and had the same expression from when I was teaching him, he looked bored but Edi ignored his attitude completely and continued with the lecture. There I was watching them both, sitting on a sofa a bit away from them. You may ask why I am with them here, the medium got fond of the baked sweets I gave him and he wished for them during this lecture too. Thanks to that, I was made to work in the kitchen even in a foreign land. The man and the youth Heinrich, and even the princess, were baffled by me. I was hurt a little. Leaving that aside, I noticed that the medium’s head started moving like a pendulum being exposed to the man’s pleasant voice.

He is quite bold, falling asleep in private lessons. I’m obviously not praising him. The man continued even under such condition but it would be observed that his naturally beautiful eyebrows were frowned. Frankly speaking, their situation couldn’t be taken  positively from any angle. The lesson is meaningless if the medium himself has no intention of attending it. Edi obviously knows it  and maybe that’s why his aura is gradually turning thorny as time passes. 

｢Your eminence, let me show you an example first.｣

I have a bad feeling about this, the man started chanting in magical language in a low tone and at the same time water in the pitcher next to me splashed and left the pitcher turning into an opaque lump of floating water. My eyes goggled in astonishment but that wasn’t the end of it, the lump of water turned into a pitcher sized beautiful lady. She fluttered her opaque attire made of water and began to fly around the drowsy medium. The medium who had finally woken up by then widened his copper red eyes. The small lady smiled and patted the medium’s tip of the nose. She watched the medium’s face turning bright with happiness and gave a mischievous smile and dispersed right away. 

There was a huge splash and medium who got water all over his face blinked multiple times trying to figure out what had happened. Water drizzled from the turban on his head. He wiped off water from his long eyelashes with one hand and smiled proudly. 

｢I too am pretty good at playing with water!｣

While the water was dropping off from his body, he pointed his what coloured fingertip towards the man’s nose. 

｢My friend! Let’s play together with him till we are satisfied!｣

As he declared it happily the water started to gather on his finger tip. The huge lump of water took the shape of a serpent and crawled towards Edi. I stood up predicting a future where Edi would be all wet, Edi’s face was indifferent as usual. Before the serpent would touch him, it stopped completely. It looked at Edi’s face and then at the medium’s face with a troubled expression like that of  a human being. The man put his hand on its face and muttered something short in the magical language, the serpent lost its shape and fell down without any resistance. The medium widened his eyes in surprise and the man who wasn’t in contact with any water snapped his finger, the water on the floor and the water on the medium evaporated in an instance. There was no sign left that the floor or the medium were once wet. All of it disappeared without leaving a trace. 

｢My friend…..｣

The medium muttered all stunned and the man replied to it with a sneer. Quite childish of my husband. He must have realized my gaze criticizing him, he gave a glance at me as if to ask if I had anything to say. This man seems narrow minded but he doesn’t hesitate to pass on his vast knowledge to people who work hard and strive to get better but he is really strict against the people who don’t strive for anything and are lazy. So his treatment of the medium can’t really be helped. I would repeat it again though, I personally think that it was quite childish. 

If this continues, nothing productive will happen. I kept the sigh from coming out and bent down and picked up the teapot from the lowtable. 

｢Your highness, Edi. How about you take a break?｣

I raised my voice in a stronger tone than usual. The man sighed and the medium stood up and came running towards me, the stunned medium from a few moments ago seemed like a lie. 

｢Filmina, Filmina, you brought the sweets from yesterday, right?｣

｢Yes, I have. Here you go, please sit down. Edi, come sit I’ll brew tea immediately.｣

｢-Alright.｣

The man endured by turning all his complaints into a sigh and sat on the sofa in front of me after the medium had sat next to me. I watched him sit and then brewed the herb tea from the royal capital and poured them for the medium and Edi. The medium started filling his mouth with the sweets and Edi began to drink the tea to regain his composure. I was relieved that the atmosphere was peaceful again and took a sip. The only sound in the room was that on the medium eating the sweets as the awkward silence filled the room. The medium drank the tea at once and smiled at the man sitting in front of him. 

｢Agedilus, was it? You are amazing. You are the first person that my friend prioritized over me.｣

｢It isn’t like that.｣

Edi denied the medium’s praise without any hesitation. It was something unexpected for the medium as he tilted his head in wonder.

｢What do you mean?｣

｢The water spirit from before didn’t propritize me, it just obeyed me since I gave it clear orders. If you haven’t asked it to play but had given clear orders then it would have obeyed you.｣

｢…What do you mean by that?｣

｢You need to make them follow you based on your will and not on their will. Do you think you can accomplish what you need to accomplish when the time comes with such a method?｣

Upon hearing Edi, the medium frowned. He pouted and glared at the man.

｢You too are trying to make me give orders to my friend just like everyone else.｣

He lowered his copper red eyes in a bad mood, he looked somewhat disappointed. 

｢Everyone is like that. But I don’t want to give orders to my kind friends.｣

Since my friends and I are on equal terms said the medium. I didn’t know what to say so I pretended to drink the tea and kept silent. It’s not like I don’t understand what the medium is saying. It is obvious that nobody wants to boss around their important friend. It pains me, even though it isn’t possible status-wise, to think what if I had to order around the princess. On contrary to that, no matter what the princess says turns into an order due to her status. I am quite happy to oblige if she gives me an order. But she didn’t do that this time. Not only this time but she has never been unfair to me. That’s why I don’t want to do anything that betrays our friendship. 

The same can be said about the medium. Even I can understand that he doesn’t want to ruin his relationship with the spirits that he considers as his friends by giving them orders. 

Wonder how Edi would respond. I looked at the man, he put his teacup back on the saucer and looked straight at the medium for the first time since he sat on the sofa. The medium shivered,the man had noticed it but he ignored it and opened his mouth. 

｢You not wanting to give orders is quite noble.But if this continues, people would blame the spirits who have no ill intentions. Are you going to keep quiet and watch the spirits being blamed for the crimes that you don’t intend on committing?｣

｢…..｣

On Edi’s inquiry, the medium turned meek, looked down, and turned silent. The man didn’t continue further and proceeded to drink tea. And awkward silence that couldn’t by no means be called comfortable took over the room again.
