「The Sky People were able to dominate even the ancient dragons with their magic and scientific technologies. In a way, it was inevitable that they would become arrogant.
As one would expect, they fought with the Three Dragon Empires, and the ancient giants, but the celestial beings that came from far beyond the sea of stars also arrived to fight at the same time. It might be hard to imagine it, but anyway, their fight with all those races greatly weakened the Sky People’s power. That became the reason for their decline」

All things considered, if I were to introduce this Professor to Ryoukichi, he would simply attack her with questions about the Sky People with all his might, without any regard to her being the strongest Water Dragon in the world.

「But you know, Dran. The Sky People’s fight with their superiors and with the off-world invaders wasn’t the only reason for their downfall and destruction」

「Hmm? Is that your new theory, Professor? I’ve always assumed that the decline of their influence was because of the large scale war between all the races…」

「Yes, I think that explanation is certainly true too.
But in the legacies and the literature that the Sky People have left behind up until now, in a place inside the ruins that is unrelated to the war that brought their end, it appears that they welcomed the limits of their race.
All living things wish to increase their own numbers, and fill up the world.
In order for their most superior bloodlines to survive, living things seek out fellow beings who have good survival skills or are at least proficient at some kind of skill, and without needing to think about it, they naturally establish a life for their offspring.
But the Sky People had a long history, and they matured as a race until there was no more room for growth. Gradually, they stopped giving birth to children, and they ran out of creativity or imagination to make any more new cultures or techniques.
Even so, because of the unbelievable scientific technologies that they cultivated, and the secret mysteries of their magic tools, they were able to take various measures to preserve their lives. That is what we’ve learned from the many materials they left behind.
Honestly, it includes so many things that are so difficult to understand, that I hesitate to even speak about it.」

「Then, Professor, the reason why you are holding another investigation in Solania, is because you think that it is a place that has something to do with the preservation of the Sky People, right?」

「It’s based on the results of all the previous investigations, and my intuition too. If I had foresight, or if I were a priest of some god of knowledge or truth, then I would sound more convincing. But unfortunately I’m neither of those, so I haven’t been able to receive support from the scientific society, or the Magic Academy.
Well, it can’t be helped, because I don’t have any physical proof to give to them. Right now, it’s just an abstract theory sitting on the desk inside my head」

As Professor Edward said that, he smiled brightly, without a single hint of resentment or discontent for having his theory not be acknowledged. He simply believed in the answer he had come to, and I felt he had a strong determination to reach the truth.

「Wow, there’s hardly anyone who would listen so intently to me talking, so I ended up blabbering on for a while. You didn’t get bored, did you?」

「No, it was very insightful. If you suggest something that goes against traditional values and knowledge, there will be people who won’t accept it.
However, Professor, I don’t see any dark emotions from you despite facing such hardship and rejection. I think you are the kind of person who’s worthy of respect」

「Dran, no, no, no, I haven’t been praised this much in years! I’m so happy and embarrassed, it’s a little unbecoming, ahahaha.
Oh, right, we’re almost at the campgrounds. Do you see that small hill over there? That’s where the tools for the investigation, and proper lodging facilities, are. We should stop there first and have something to eat」

After laughing for a bit with a happy embarrassed expression, Professor Edward pointed out the hill that we could see down the road paved with the synthesized material.

We were almost there, just a short distance away now. But when I looked toward where Professor Edward was pointing, from just around the corner right in front of us, two types of magical energy came flooding out, and hit us.

It was a large amount of magical energy that no human could have possibly produced. It drove away the carefree attitudes that everyone else but me has had until now, and we all immediately prepared for combat.

「What is this magic power!?」

It was a magical power so strong, the superhuman Christina-san couldn’t hold back her astonishment. Selina’s face became pale, and even Professor Edward and Miss Eliza, who could be called experienced veterans of battle, settled in tension.

Lenia, however, was the only person who had a fiendish smile rise to her lips.「Oh?」She let out that single word, as if she were truly amused. Her reaction showed that she thought this situation was perfect for distracting her from her boredom.

「Professor, this magical energy is extremely dangerous. If we fire an emergency signal flare now, the ship should still be close enough to see it」

「That’s right, Eliza. As long as we are alive, we can come back to Solania again. Besides, it is my responsibility as a teacher to bring Dran, Christina and the others back home safely」

As Professor Edward and Miss Eliza, with very serious faces, decided to make an escape from Solania, I apologetically stopped them right there.

「Professor, Miss Eliza, how should I say this, I have an idea of who this magic energy belongs to. So first of all, since there definitely isn’t any danger to us, there is no need to leave Solania.」

「This is someone you know!? But I doubt even Headmaster Olivier can produce this amount of magic. This would be on the same level as a high ranked magic beast or ghost, you know?」

Well, somehow or another, these were the offspring of my fellow brethren, but I couldn’t say something like that so truthfully. So I gave a vague response, as I walked toward the turn in the road.

「Well, you see, they’re part of a very rare race. They’re probably fighting each other over something, so I shall go over and mediate them. You two should please wait here. Mmhm」

「Ah, Dran-san, it’s dangerous!?」

「Don’t go alone, I’ll go too」

「……」

Leaving Professor Edward and Miss Eliza behind, and walking as if they were trying to hurriedly escape from that place, Selina, Christina-san, and Lenia chased after me.

I can understand Selina and Christina-san, but even Lenia wanted to come too? Could it be that she might just be worried about me, as impossible as that sounded?

Rather than that, I was more worried that Lenia would clash with those people waiting on the other side of the corner.

Anyway, for now, suppressing this murderous intent and the threat of conflict coming from the magical energy was my top priority. When I turned the corner, the following sight was what came flying into my view.

One is an Imperial Dragon with the antlers of a deer, the ears of a horse, and the tail of a snake extending from her small butt, while the other was a Dragon-person with sharp horns, pointed ears that slipped through her hair, and bat-like wings on her back.

Both of them were Dragonian, the strongest type of demi-human, but the small size of their population made their interaction with other races so scarce, they were even called a phantom race. Here stood two young Dragonian women. There wasn’t enough room in the sky for both of them to fly together. And so, they stood against each other now as enemies.

For me, these two were people I knew very well.

「You should have been stuck holed up at the bottom of the cold sea, so why are you here in the city of the Sky People!」

「I could say the same to you! Shouldn’t you still be sleeping in that cave that stinks of sulfur and shows no sign of morning and night!? You should be lazing about eating ghosts or magic beasts and sleeping all day!」

I felt like I was the one who should be voicing both those complaints to them.

Ahh, Vaje, Liu Yu. Why, oh why, are the two of you here in Galois?

「Grrrrr」

While raising a growl, fire began to spill out from between Vaje’s fangs.

「…………」

Vaje glared with the intensity of a king of beasts, enough to make even the largest, most ferocious of magic beasts run away. Indomitable and undaunted, Liu Yu returned a glare that was as cold as the waters of the sea.

It was unlikely that these two had come to the Sky City, and together no less, for no reason. And of all the things, I had come across the two of them so suddenly, and witnessed their quarrel.

No, there was but one thing that these two had in common. It was, in other words, me. By any chance, could it be that these two had come to Solania to see me?
