“Translator: Goma/Editor: TheNix”

Now then. We upperclassmen will head to the second floor, so see you guys later.

The upperclassmen then walked along the dark corridor.

Us underclassmen were now left there.

Well it is really dark huh?

As the great detective says; due to the light peeking through the curtains on the windows, I could somewhat barely see the inside of the building. However, it was not bright at all.

It’s good that it is still noon. If this was night, we wouldn’t be able to see anything.

You are right.

To start, we headed to a door near us.

Let’s start by searching this room.

The great detective walking in front opened the door roughly.

It seemed that the small room was some sort of storage space.

Following Tensai who entered the room, D’arc stepped into the room trembling.

T.. there seems to be nothing weird here.

     **Click**

What?

     He stepped on something.

     I immediately pulled D’arc’s arm.

Then something flew from the side where D’arc had just been standing.

Are you alright?

T.. thank you Jūgo.

Three poles had stuck out from the wall.

What are you doing, D’arc. I did not think you would fall for such an easy trap.

     **Click**

While mocking D’arc, Tensai stepped forward. I hurriedly pulled Tensai’s collar.

I don’t think you should mock someone while almost falling into a hole.

After being grabbed by me, Tensai stood at the edge of a hole. She pouted out her lips, and fell silent.

Since we should not just keep on searching recklessly, we went out of the room for a while.

H.. hey. That was a trap, right?

Yep.

Then that must mean this building really is a ((Ruin)), right?

D’arc had easily fallen for the trap. He seemed quite worried. Oh yeah, D’arc had only been observing the entry exam for the Adventure Club, and had waited outside the ((Ruins)) in the high-rise building. It must be the first time he has experienced a ((Ruin)), huh.

Are you alright?

Even as I asked this, I sensed he was not alright at all. He was fidgeting worriedly.

Hmmm. These kinds of traps are hard.

The great detective standing beside me muttered.

What do you mean?

These kinds of traps are purely meant to eliminate the trespasser.

You’re right.

That means I won’t be of much help here.

You are quite humble.

I am good at figuring out mysteries, but not finding treasure. If I was solving a riddle sure, but I am not good at these kinds of sudden things.

Even though this girl usually tries to make herself look good, she’s saying these kinds of things. She really is a decent person, huh?

By the way, what about you D’arc?

As if it is a matter of course, D’arc shook his head hurriedly.

Perhaps if we had information about the traps beforehand, it wouldn’t be hard to avoid these kinds of traps.

So Tensai, who had been quite useful last time, would be a burden this time. The same applies to D’arc.

Would president Yuiga and the others be alright?

Mr. Tsurezure is a ninja and Ms. Ibara seems quite athletic. Although president Yuiga might be the burden, he should still be better off than these two.

But thinking about this, I felt that the teams were quite unbalanced now.

……Hmm, this is just a coincidence right?

I heard a heavy sound. At the same time the whole building shook and dust stirred up.

Was that from above us?

It was quite an impact.

The two looked up and muttered.

True, that impact sounded as if something heavy dropped down. I could guess what kind of trap it was.

If you are crushed by that thing you would be a pancake.

D’arc’s face turned pale as she heard me say this. It seemed that he imagined someone being crushed.

Compared to upstairs, the thing in this room just now was quite harmless, huh?

In contrast to her assistant who had a pale face, the great detective did not seem to be scared at all. She calmly made this evaluation.

As Tensai had said, when D’arc stepped on the switch on the floor the things that came out were mere sticks. It was not that there was a sharp blade on  the end of the sticks. That was the case with the hole Tensai fell into as well. There wasn’t anything in the bottom, and the hole was shallow.

If one were to receive the impact of either, one might become hurt, but neither trap put a life in danger.

Anyways, let’s go to the next room.

Then, we went to another room.

There were two traps activated again. And once again, I barely saved them.

We returned to the corridor immediately and the two who had just fallen for traps twice in a row fell to their knees gasping for breath.

I.. I give up.

H.. how disappointing, D’arc. Stop resting, and stand up.

I don’t think the pot should be calling the kettle black.

After a while Tensai seemed to finally catch her breath. She looked at the second room, put her hand to her mouth, and thought.

Jūgo, don’t you think something seems weird?

     Tensai suddenly said so.

About what?

The trap in that room just now seemed quite easy.

True.

As Tensai said, the traps this time were similar to the first round of traps. It would only hurt one if one fell for it.

Previously when Tensai and I went to the ((Ruins)) with a glass floor, failure meant death. Compared to that, these traps seemed quite easy.

The building shook once again. It was from the second floor again.

……Perhaps the difficulty of the traps is different between the first and second floor.

What do you mean?

The entrance to this ((Ruins)) was not locked. Perhaps there would be other people who might wander into this building even if they didn’t come here for the treasure.

Seems possible.

The building was located very deep in the mountain. Considering how it had been abandoned for a long time, it wouldn’t be unrealistic for a rumor to go around that a ghost lives in this building, or that there would be people who want to use this place as a test of courage.

So the traps in the first floor would be to chase away such people. Perhaps the traps on the second floor would be the actual traps of the ((Ruin)).

I see, that is why the staircase to the second floor could be seen from the back door, and that is why it is located at the end of the corridor, huh. That would be people who accidentally enter would immediately go back, and not reach the second floor.

     That must mean……

Then that must inevitably mean the real stuff is on the second floor.

It seemed that Tensai had come to the same conclusion as me.

Doesn’t that mean the president and the others are in danger, since they went to the second floor?

D’arc made a worrisome face. He is right.

……Actually, if you have the floor plan you could kind of guess that.

A person who enters this building without any information beforehand would not know where the staircase is. Hence one would definitely not notice this hidden design of the building. Instead, the person would inevitably have to search all over the place for the treasure chest. However, things would be different if you knew the floor plan. You would be able to make a guess as to where the treasure chest is.

That means?

At my murmur, Tensai feigned a laugh.

Mr. Yuiga had tricked us again, huh.

We heard another big impact from above.

Section 3

Aiee!

A spear whizzed past in front of D’arc. In contrast to the things in the first floor, on the tip of the spear that popped out from the wall had a real sharp spear head.

I.. I am scared.

D’arc trembled and stuck to me.

Hmph, how disappointing of an assistant are you to be scared at just that?

Saying that, you still hide behind me huh?

Then, we started walking along the corridor of the second floor.

We had stopped investigating the first floor, and immediately headed to the second floor. As Tensai had guessed, the second floor was completely different from the first floor.

The traps were designed not to chase away the trespassers but to kill them.

On top of that, the traps were abundant not only in the rooms, but in the corridor as well.

Hey! Stop touching all over the place. Especially you, great detective.
