“TRANSLATOR:TheNix/EDITOR TheNix”

O Month X Day:

I ended up living in a room that is inhabited by a terrifying earthbound spirit…

「Who are you calling a terrifying earthbound spirit?! 」

And here is Nanana-chan in her straight-man comedy role again.

「Wait wait wait. This is what Nanana-chan said to write, right? 」

「I wanted to try out a straight-man comedy role」

I think I can do it.

The terrifying earthbound spirit loves yogurt…

「Who are you saying loves yogurt!? 」

In fact, she only eats low-fat, low-calorie foods.

「Who cares about their weight? 」

And is very cute.

「That word has already been banned!」

Nanana-chan is so embarrassed that she’s blushing.

Yeah, this is getting interesting. As I’m thinking this Nanana-chan takes away my notebook and pen while muttering “Mumumu”

「I don’t want these things written about me anymore so this time I’ll be the one writing. 」

It’s Nanana-chan’s turn.

O Month X Day

Hi I’m Juugo Yama, a very nice young man.

「Don’t write that, I’d never say that! 」

How am I spending my days off? Should I talk to the flowers that I cherish so much?

「No no no because there are none! Stop it, really! 」

Let’s go little kittens, time to party

「Who the hell is this guy? He doesn’t exist! 」

I was desperately trying to appeal to Nanana-chan and she shot me down with one word.

「Actually, isn’t this sentence boring? 」

「Wait a minute. You are messing around with a person then dismissing it as boring! That’s terrible! 」

I take the notebook back from Nanana-chan and put the pen back on the paper.

I’m Ryugajo Nanana, a very pretty girl

「Waaah. That’s not me. Not me! 」

Screaming, Nanana-chan steals the notebook and pen back.

Hi, I’m Juugo Yama. My hobby is reading my own poems while looking up at the white clouds.

「Hey! I don’t have a hobby like that! 」

I take the notebook and pen back from Nanana-chan.

I’m a magical girl who fights bad guys who threaten world peace.

「Eh, that’s fine」

「What!? 」

A lot of boys fall in love with me because I’m so cute

「Stop! Stop it! 」

The notebook is stolen.

I love girls with glasses!

「YES! 」

「Oh. I just wrote something random, but it turns out that’s the truth. Then how about…」

Bigger boobs are better.

「Well, I don’t really care about that. 」

Not bad for a short kid.

Hmmm. I don’t really care about that either

「You grew a thick skin. How come you aren’t shy anymore? 」

「Lash out! No, when it comes to girl’s tastes there is so much damage…」

「I see so, so this kind of thing」

All the little kittens in the world are my mine to own

「I didn’t say that! I wouldn’t say that, because I wouldn’t say such cheesy lines! 」

After that Nanana-chan and I scrambled for the notebook and pen. We wrote about each other and squirmed with embarrassment. As the mental damage takes its toll, they are out of breath.

Before I knew it, we had wasted a bunch of pages. The mysterious characters we dramatized (based on Nanana-chan and I) were nothing more than cringy caricatures.

What’s more, the two people who are appearing in the book are just arguing at each other about the cringy characters they are creating for each other, and how they don’t really act like that.

At this rate the novel will get nowhere.

「Hey, Nanana-chan. I feel like if we keep fighting we’ll just both end up unhappy. 」

「You’re right. Our arguing won’t create anything. Then it might be better to find a way to settle this. 」

Nanana-chan handed me the pen she had been guarding.

「Let’s see…」

「It’s important to wrap up the story neatly. 」

「How can I sum this up elegantly? There are only two people and they have nothing but cringy traits! We can’t end this story like this! 」

「It’s ok, if it’s important we can end it with a twist. 」

「No, let’s just leave it half finished…」

「Let’ me say this, I hate leaving things half finished. No matter how it ends up, we keep working on it till it’s finished. That’s my rule」, said Nanana-chan with a serious tone to her voice.

What a strange rule to impose on yourself.

Judging from that statement it seems that Nanana-chan is serious. So I grab the pen and turn back to the notebook.

I thought about it while remembering the cringy traits that I had written so far. There’s no way this can be elegantly concluded. Nothing has even happened! How can I make an elegant conclusion with this?

After a few minutes of trial and error, while Nanana-chan stared at me, I wrote a conclusion with a trembling pen.

A meteorite falls and destroys earth. <The End>

「…」

「…」

Ugh, Nanana-chan’s gaze hurts.

「…just have a thick skin. No matter what. 」

「Will I not like it? 」

「Well it’s like this…」

「Well you can write instead. 」

「Wha, me?! 」

「To me it’s the best ending, but if you don’t like Nanana-chan you can change it. Well, I’m looking forward to it. Are you going to write the ending? 」

「Ugh. 」

「You love comedy shows. I’m sure you’ll write a conclusion that will make me laugh. 」

「I hold out the pen to Nanana-chan with an awkward smile on my face. 」

Nanana-chan looks from the pen to the notebook. She can see the ending written in the notebook, the ending being a meteorite falling…

「…is this good? I think it’s a pretty good ending. 」

Smiling with a wink she gives me a thumbs up.

「That’s right! Yes, that means I’m done writing the novel! 」

I took my notebook in a hurry and thrust it into my bookshelf.

After a few seconds of silence I mutter, 「Nanana-chan. 」

「What, Juugo?」

「It’s hard to write a novel, isn’t it? 」

「I agree」

「Speaking of which. Nanana-chan, I have a question. 」

「OK, what is it? 」

After a brief pause, Nanana-chan had gone back to playing online games and eating pudding as if nothing had happened. I asked what was bothering her.

「Why did you end up helping me with my story all the way to the finish? 」

Sure, I was the one who invited her to write with me, but Nanana-chan had been trying to help me write even before that. I thought it was because she was interested in writing a novel.

This is how Nanana-chan answered this question:

「I guess it was because you were trying to do something new? 」

「I’m not challenging you, I was just curious…」

「I think that kind of intuition is important」

「Intuition? 」

Nanana-chan nods.

「I think that’s what triggered it. I was interested in it, or it seemed interesting. I thought I should give it a try. That might be what Juugo wants to do some day. 」

「Is that something I want to do? 」

「Yeah, I was like that too」

However it may have just been a whim that triggered the idea. No matter how it happened though, things worked out in the end.

The strange rule that Nanana-chan imposes on herself crosses my mind now. It doesn’t matter what form it takes, whether it’s a success or a failure. I’ll try my best until the end.

If you stop in the middle and throw it away, your path will end there. But if you continue until the end… Maybe that path leads you to where you were aiming for.

I see. So that’s how Ryugajo Nanana managed to create this island. That somehow convinced me.

「That’s amazing Nanana-chan」

Nanana-chan’s face immediately turned bright red.

「Wh..wh..what are you saying all of a sudden, Juugo!? Even if you flatter me you aren’t getting any of this pudding.」

「That’s too bad.」

***

「I’m going, Nanana-chan.」

「Good luck. Buy some pudding on your way home.」

This morning scene feels natural. Nanana-chan smiled at Juugo, as usual. And Juugo waved goodbye from the entrance, as usual.

When Juugo closed the front door he heard the voices of the freshmen Tensai and Hosino. They lived in room 203, the room next door. He bumped into them as he ran out the door.

Their voices are getting further and further away, and eventually can’t be heard anymore. Nanana-chan starts to feel a bit lonely. Juugo has gone to school and Nanana, who is left alone in the room, goes back to playing online games as usual.

She turns her eyes towards the bookshelf and a notebook catches her eye.

「That’s nostalgic.」

It’s the notebook that Juugo tried to write a journal style novel in when he first moved to the island.

Since then, he’s tried several times, saying “This might be a chance to get closer to Yumeji-san!” He’s tried several times, but it hasn’t seemed to work out.

Nanana picks it up and turns the page.

You can see traces of Juugo’s struggle to write something. Lots of writing and erasing.

Nanana had no intention of saying anything about Juugo giving up on writing the novel.

I just don’t think that’s the path Juugo should take. He challenged himself, came to that conclusion, and stopped. I think he’ll find something new.

She looked at the last page and couldn’t help but laugh.

O Month X Day

It doesn’t seem right for to imagine something and write it down. Instead of letting the protagonists of the story do various things, I’d rather go do them myself. That’s why what I’m going to do is find the person who killed Nanana-chan. But until then… I’ll live happily with Nanana-chan.

As a side note, that sentence was written with a pen. He must have been embarrassed to write that himself.

Seeing that Nanana muttered, 「This story doesn’t seem to be fiction. It’s non-fiction.」

I’m not sure what the ending of this story will be. As for me though, the last sentence is the undeniable truth. Ryugajo Nanana is now living happily with Juugo Yama.
