Extract from the notebook of a certain editor from the magazine『NanNan』

ーDoes the rumored cup really exist?

「Ahh, it’s probably about that one mug cup. Yes, it’s true that I have it. It’s a cup that I bought some years ago at a flea market. It seems like it has some sort of strange power. If I had to explain it, I would say it is a magical cup. However, I don’t think the thing is that amazing.」

ー What is the actual effect of the cup?

「When you drink coffee from the cup, the other person at the table will fall in love with you. I guess it is a sort of love potion? However, the effect only lasts for about 30 minutes, which is extremely short. As soon as the time is up, the other person’s feelings return to normal. So it is not really a magical cup, is what I mean to say.」

ー Why are you using such a cup in the equipment of your shop?

「For sure, the love that is born from this cup is just a deception. However, within those 30 minutes, the other person is in love with you. In that time, I think they could realize there is a chance for them.」

ーA chance, you say?

「Imagine that the girl you like is made to fall in love with you because of the magic, don’t you think it would be easier to confess your feelings for them as well? Thinking of it from the opposite perspective; even after 30 minutes when the magic spell breaks, the fact that you were temporarily in love with them will remain clearly in your memory. And that means you now know of a “maybe” that you weren’t even able to imagine before. You wouldn’t be able to help but wonder: what would happen if you were in love with that girl? Could that make you happy as well? That’s what I’m talking about when I say chance. If it was someone you were not all that close with, it might just end with a brief moment of confusion. But the closer you two are, the more likely it is that you will know there is a chance.」

ーIn other words, you are offering them a starting point.

「I wouldn’t want to go as far as to decide that kind of thing for them, but yes, that is my intention. It’s just a little prank from an old man. That’s why I only bring out that cup when I’m in the right mood.」

ーI see

「So it’s okay if you turn this conversation into an article or something, but please keep it as vague as possible. Because in the end it is entirely up to me whether I decide to use that mug or not.」

ーWell then, can I perhaps make a deal with you under some conditions?

「Uh, what kind of conditions?」

ーTo be honest, there is a person I like at my workplace.

「Oh, I understand. Well then, try and visit together some time. I’ll prepare you a beautiful cake and a suitable tea. I also recommend you my coffee. I’m especially proud of the aroma it gives off.」

ーI would like that very much.

「However, you can’t know whether or not I will bring out the special cup.」

  The next day, I invited the colleague I was interested in to the master’s cafe, and the magical cup did not appear. However, being able to talk to him in the cafe ended up becoming a starting point for us. We got along better and we ended up dating.

  In the end, there was no way for me to know whether the magical cup really existed. Whether or not this magical cup really existed though, this ended up being a starting point for the romance with the person I liked to bloom. I guess it was true that it was up to yourself to decide if you should take action.

  Let’s make sure the article is quite vague, like the master wished for. Because I think that rather than truly believing that this cup exists, it is better for the readers to wonder whether or not it does. That way the girls will probably work the hardest on their romance. They will probably try to look extra cute for the person they like. To be truly happy with the person they like, that is probably the best way to obtain it.
