The Demise of the Stones
Having gained Flack as his successor, Kou, too, found himself swallowed by hectic days.
In Kou’s office on the Astraea, Fuyuki had come to deliver a report.
「This is a report from the New Mercenary Association, and from our own people as well.」
「So they’ve abolished the ‘disposal’ of humans under the Stones control—dumping them as so-called organic fertilizer—and they’ve also abolished the nanomachine-capsule brainwashing they were administering to anyone below the citizen class. That’s a major shift.」
Among the general populace under the Stones rule, there had been a three-tier status system.
First was the citizen class: Lacedaemon—so-called first-class citizens.
Next was the resident class: the Perioikoi. They were forced to swallow nanomachine capsules, robbed of the will to resist—yet they were still allowed just enough free will to aspire toward becoming Lacedaemon.
Last was the slave class: the Helots. They had no free will at all—living robots, with even their mealtimes and bathroom breaks
