CHAPTER 127: THE PURPLE LIGHTNING PART 1

It would seem that the Devil Investigation operation would be carried out by two groups, one consisting of our Party members, and one of a completely different Adventurers Party.

Since conducting investigations like that required light footwork and the ability to go from one place to another over and over again, it was decided that this job was going to be really inefficient if it was handled to a group consisting of a large number of people.

Also, it would seem that the vast majority of other Adventurers were assigned to the Devil Subjugation Team, and because of that fact there were not all that many suitable candidates to fill the necessary role in the Investigation Team.

So to put it simply, the only reason that we were being assigned to the Investigation Team was because that group suffered from the greatest shortage of manpower.

Just like Natalie-san explained to us earlier, you could participate in the Emergency Request regardless of your rank, but……

But even so, it was quite understandable that there would hardly be any F Rank Adventurer out there who would be willing to participate in a quest as dangerous as this one.

After all, our opponent here was going to be a Devil that supposedly leveled the entire village to the ground over the course of a single night.

There were many Adventurers who deemed that kind of opponent to be way above their ability to handle, and with the risks far outweighs the potential gains, they have chosen to play it safe and stay out of this one.

Not to mention that we have also heard from Natalie-san that the number of active participants in this Emergency Request was already quite small, consisting mostly of a small group of people who only thought that they could get rich quickly by taking part in it.

「Nina, for the time being, could you go back home and explain the situation to everyone else? I want them to be up to speed on this one.」

「…… Yes. I understand.」

Nina nodded her head confidently and left the Adventurers’ Guild’s building while running.

「Nyaahh…… For the time being, I guess that we have nothing else to do, huh?」

「Yeah, you can say that again.」

While we were waiting for Nina to return to us, we just sat down at the side in the common hall of the Adventurers’ Guild.

According to Natalie-san’s words, the rest of the Investigation Team’s parties have already been decided on, and so they would be able to introduce them to us soon.

In that case, I thought it would be better for our respective groups to meet face to face as soon as possible, so I asked Natalie to mediate and summon the other group here as soon as possible.

While Natalie-san was busy with summoning the other Adventurers here, both Kanade and I had nothing else to do for the time being, so we were just sitting in our chairs and relaxing to the best of our ability.

「…… It’s really hard to believe that while we are sitting here and relaxing like that, somewhere out there there are some truly horrible things happening.」

「Yes, that’s right…… We are technically doing the same thing that we always do, but for some reason it’s really hard to relax right about now.」

Of course…… Part of the reason for that feeling was because the entire Guild was in a rush about now, and the atmosphere here was way different from its usual one.

「Thank you for waiting, Shroud-san.」

After a while, Natalie-san returned to us.

Standing right behind her, we could see a man and a woman who appeared to be Adventurers.

「Yo! Aren’t you guys the so-called ‘Heroes of Horizon’? I’m Ax Gin. I’m a swordsman who uses a slightly special weapon in a fight. Nice to meet you!」

「…… I am Cell Mercenal. Nice to meet you.」

When it comes to the man, he seemed to be slightly older than me…… Was he perhaps in his mid-twenties?

His hair was really ruffled and unkept.

His well-trained body was covered with light armor, supposedly to make it easier for him to move out there on the field.

He seemed to have a friendly personality and had a bright smile on his face at all times.

And even though it was our very first time meeting here, he forcibly asked for a handshake while grinning the entire time.

As for the woman, she seemed to be the same as that man, age-wise.

She had Indigo-color hair that was put together in a short cut.
Even though when compared to that man her body seemed to be rather small, you could see that she has trained her body as an Adventurer quite well.

In contrast to her male partner, I got the impression from her that she was a very calm and composed person.

And I really mean it just like that. She was not gloomy. She was not cold. She just seemed to be really calm.

If I were to sum her up with one word, it would most certainly be: dignified.

A rather cheerful man and a rather dignified woman…… If there was ever a pure definition of contrast between the two people, those two would have been the perfect representation of it.

「My name is Rein Shroud. This is my friend, Kanade. Nice to meet you both.」

Saying that, I have responded to the man’s…… Ax’s enthusiastic handshake.

「Oh, and if you would please stop calling me a “Hero”. I don’t really like being called that by others.」

「Hmmm, well, well, talk about you being all modest, huh? I imagined that you would be someone who’s way more pompous and egotistical, since you were dubbed a Hero and all that.」

「Are you perhaps disappointed? Because I turned out to be not quite what you were expecting in the first place?」

「No, that’s not it. From now on, we are going to be members of the same team acting together. It would be far easier to get this job properly done if we were to cooperate in a friendly manner.」

Saying that, Ax flashed me a bright smile.

That smile of his somehow reminded me of a small child. That’s how innocent and sincere it was.

Until now, I have had a few encounters with other Adventurers and none of them actually managed to leave that good of an impression on me, but then again……

That might have actually been just my own personal prejudice coming to the surface.

Maybe it’s just me being all naive here, but I was getting a feeling that this Ax guy and his companion were actually good people.

「Nyah……」

However, Kanade still seemed to be slightly cautious of the newly arrived pair, as she was keeping a safe distance away from them.

「Oh my, you really are a member of the Cat Spirit Tribe! I’m Ax. Nice to meet you!」

「Unyah…… N-Nice to meet you.」

「But I must say…… Yeah, you are one hell of a cutie! So how about it? Would you like to go on a date night with me sometime soon?」
