CHAPTER 129: AN ENCOUNTER. OR MAYBE, A REUNION PART 1

We made it across the Stride Bridge without any trouble, just as we did before.

From there, we continued to move further and further south.

After a while, we arrived at the town of River’s End, the first town on the Southern Continent that travelers would come across.

It was a relatively small town, but it would still serve as a base of operations for various Adventurers and merchants, so there was no trouble with us being able to find a place to stay.

We spent most of our time traveling for the day, and it was already getting dark outside.

「Nyah……..」

When I finished checking us in at the local inn, for some reason Kanade did not look too happy about it.

「Hm? What’s wrong, Kanade?」

「Why do we have to be apart?　I’d like to have all of us in the same room together, just like we used to live before we bought the house.」

「Well, it’s not like I can’t understand where you are coming from with that one, but there was nothing we could do about it. There was no other alternative for us.」

We could have rented one of the larger rooms at the inn, but unfortunately, they were all occupied for the moment.

The only rooms that were still available were the small rooms for two people at most.

That’s why we had no other choice but to rent four small rooms.

By the way, the room assignments were going to be as follows: Ax and I, Kanade and Tanya, Sora and Luna, and Nina and Cell.

Tina was going to stay with Nina for the time being, since the kettle was currently like a portable house for her.

「Could it be that you do not feel comfortable being alone with Tanya, or something like that?」

「N-No! No, it’s nothing like that…… But I just thought, since it was my chance, or rather an opportunity, I might have wanted to share the room with Rein…… or something like that.」

「Huh? You wanted to share a room with me? Why? Is there some reason behind that?」

「N-No!? No reason at all, nya! I-I-I-It’s j-j-j-just a t-t-t-thought that occurred to me all of a sudden…… T-There is certainly no hidden meaning behind it! No! Nothing at all, nya!」

「Oh, is that so?」

For some reason, Kanade seemed to be strangely flustered.

Did I perhaps say something strange that upset her?

I have a vague feeling that Kanade has been acting rather strangely ever since Suzu-san arrived……

Hmm…… Yeah, thought as much. I have no idea what that could be all about.

「Come on now, Kanade. Let’s go and get some food.」

「Nyaah! Food, food♪!」

Anyways, what we all needed for the time being is a proper meal and to rest for the day.

We were a little late for dinner and moved to the dining room on the first floor of the inn.

Everyone was already seated and we were the last ones to arrive at the place.

「Alright, I can see that we are all here. Let’s have a toast, then!　It’s only going to be for a little while, but we are going to be a Party of traveling Adventurers working together! So here’s to us working together in a fruitful and efficient manner! Today, let’s drink, eat, and have a good time together!」

After Ax led the toast, Cell silently punched him for taking way too long and being way too loud.

「W-What…… what was that…… even for……?」

「What’s the point of turning this meeting into a drinking party? First of all, dinner is about to be served , so let’s eat. Then we can switch to the main purpose of this meeting, which is to talk about how we are going to move forward from now on, what policies we are going to take…… Am I right?」

「Well, I mean…… Yeah, you’re right but…… you didn’t have to hit me over it……」

「If I didn’t, you wouldn’t get my point, wouldn’t you agree……?」

「W-Well, I can’t really argue with that one……」

These two are either really good friends or they simply can’t get along at all.

And I am having a really difficult time determining which it is here.

「Nyaah, you must really get along, you two! Your reactions seem to be perfectly in sync!」

Fortunately, before I could waste even more time on this subject, Kanade has already come up with an answer.

「Please don’t say that, even as a joke. It’s seriously unpleasant.」

Cell, on the other hand, made a disgusted face upon hearing that remark, looking as if she was about to throw up.

Really now, I have never met a pair whose relationship was so difficult for me to understand or define.

「A-Alright then…… Let’s start over from the beginning, shall we? Let’s eat first, and then talk about our future plans.」

Ax made a serious face and pulled the conversation along.

「The purpose of our investigation is to find out everything that we possibly can about the “Devil” that was said to destroy the village of Pagos. So, I think that the first order of business for us should be paying the ruined village a visit. What do you think about that?」

「I’m not so sure about that.」

「Yes, I agree.」

Cell and I seemed to be on the same wavelength as we both disagreed to that almost right away, and Ax’s face twitched nervously in response.

「W-Why not?」

「Why not, you say? Hmm, no, it’s just that…… If we go to a place like that, we might run into the Devil there, right? After all, the killer has a tendency to go back to the scene of the crime, right……? And if there is even a slight possibility of something like that happening, then we should avoid it at all cost for the time being……」

「Rein is right with this one. I might add here, if we are going to investigate, we should talk to the survivors from the village first, right?　Investigating the village itself is something that can come much later on our list of priorities.」

「Hmm…… Come to think of it, now that you say it like that, you might actually be right.」

「…… Ax, are you sure you are not actually slow or anything like that? I’m sure that even a child could come up with such a simple conclusion, not to mention a grown-up man.」

「…… Hush, Luna! You shouldn’t talk about those things out loud, even if you do notice them!」

In the back, Sora and Luna were both blurting out their true feelings that shouldn’t be said out loud for sure.

Fortunately, or should I say unfortunately, Ax didn’t seem to hear them at all.

「If we are going to talk to the surviving villagers…… I wonder if our destination should be the Jizu village?」

「Yes, I suppose that would be the best. They have built the biggest shelter for the possible refugees, so I’m sure that all the surviving villagers were being relocated there.」
