CHAPTER 132: AX AND CELL PART 1

The next day.

After we finished our preparations, our group officially departed River’s End.

Our destination was the distant village of Jizu.

It would take about a week for us to get there, so it was going to be a long and arduous journey.

But since we had time to prepare and stock on necessary supplies, there was actually hardly anything that we had to worry about.

But if we had to carry a week’s worth of food and water and other various provisions, it would be quite a burden on our entourage.

So I decided to search for a bear in the wilderness, tame it and have it carry our luggage around to lessen that burden.

「Oh wow! That’s amazing! Man, having a Beast Tamer in your Party sure is convenient, huh!?」.

Ax said that in a somewhat happy tone as he looked at the bear carrying our luggage on its back.

Cell, walking right next to him, give Ax a rather cold look.

「Ax, please refrain from frolicking around like a small child. It’s unbecoming of a man your age. And it’s really embarrassing.」’

「Yeah, I know, but…… Isn’t it great, though? Look, Cell, this bear! He’s carrying all of our stuff properly on its back without complaining! I honestly didn’t know that Beast Tamers could do this kind of thing! I have only heard that it was supposed to be a rather peculiar Job with very limited use, so that really comes to me as a surprise.」

「Fufufun! Yes, that’s right! Gaze upon this and realize! Isn’t our Rein great!?」

For some reason, Kanade joined Ax and Cell’s conversation, puffing her chest and looking and sounding all proud.

「I mean, after all, Rein is our beloved Master! And that makes him really special!」

「Why is it that every time this topic comes up, you sound so proud in my stead, Kanade?」

「Hahaha! I can see that your companions love you dearly, Rein!」

「Nya, nyah!? L-Love him dearly…… Umm…… Well…… This is…… You know…… Aahh!!」

For some reason, upon hearing that remark, Kanade’s face became beet red.

I mean…… This was just a light-hearted remark meant as a joke, so why would she react so seriously to it?

「Haha. I see what’s going on.」

Seeing Kanade acting in such a flustered and panicked way, the look on Ax’s face turned quite devious.

「Ooohooo? I see, so that’s how things are, hmm? That’s what this is, hmm? Alright! Listen up, Kanade! If that is indeed the case here, then I am going to help you out! You have my full support!」

「Fueaah!? N-No! No, no, no! There’s no need! I definitely don’t know what you are talking about here, but I assure you, there’s no need for you to help!」

「Oh, come on now, don’t be like that! You see, I consider myself to be the friend of all girls and women out there. I mean, it’s a shame that I won’t be the one who is going to get to know you a little bit better, but at the very least I can help you out with your struggles and make sure that you are going to succeed in your endeavors!」

「And I’m telling you, it’s fine! Besides, I find the current status quo to be more than satisfying, so I don’t want to destroy it for a petty reason like that……!」

「Naive! You are way too naive, Kanade! If you only wish to maintain a passive attitude like that, you are only going to regret it the moment someone else goes in for the kill and steals your prize right from under your nose! That is why you should leave everything to me, and I will make sure that you are going to succeed! And that is exactly why…… Hey, Rein! How do you feel about Kanade-chan!? Serious answers only!

It was at that moment that Cell smacked Ax across the head with her bow.

「W-What the hell, Cell!? What the hell was that for!? What gives……!?」

「There is no way that you could possibly hope to solve such a delicate problem with such a brute-force approach and crude methods, wouldn’t you agree? So mind your own business and don’t interfere. Because that way you are just going to stir up even greater of a mess out of things and make those matters even more confusing for the two of them than it already is. And no one would want that to happen.」

「I-I see…… I see how it is. Because I am worried about Kanade-chan and I want to help her out, it’s making you feel jealous, right? Because I’m directing my attention towards some other woman, right? Well, you don’t have to be worried about that, Cell! You are the only one for me! But that being said, I might like to play around with fire JUST a little bit in order to…… GUBOAH!?」

「First of all, I have no idea what it is that you are talking about. And the second thing: what is even the purpose of having an affair in the first place when you are going to announce it like that to everyone around, interested or not?」

「Nyaah…… Rein, Rein.」

Hearing and seeing that exchange between the two, Kanade came closer to me and whispered in my ear.

「Are you really sure that these two are actually A Rank Adventurers? Aren’t they just some sort of traveling comedy duo? Or entertainers?」

「Trust me, Kanade. I know exactly how you feel.」

If you were to judge them solely based on those interactions that were going on between the two of them on a daily basis, there was no way that you would ever think that Ax and Cell were actually A Rank Adventurers.

But maybe…… this was their way of handling work-related stress　and other things like that? Kind of like flipping a switch on and off?

Because truth to be told, no one out there can go being all tensed-up all year around without blowing off some steam every once in a while.

…… But that was a huge maybe. One that was solely my own assumption.

「Whoa there!」

Before long, Ax quickly got back to his feet and resumed walking in the lead, ahead of all of us……

But then he came to a halt, seemingly noticing something in the distance.

「What’s going on?」

「Everyone, stop right there. We have a monster nearby.」

「What?」

This road was pretty much a main artery going out from River’s End, and monsters would rarely even show here.

The only places to hide around here were behind trees and some small bushes.

It certainly did not look as if there were any monsters anywhere nearby, but……

But Ax had the most serious look on his face, unlike anything I have seen before from him, and he’d already drawn his sword.

There was no doubt about it.

He knew that something was coming. That’s why he told everyone to stop in their tracks.

「Where is it?」
