「Right, so onto the matter at hand…… What do we do after this?」

「Yes, that’s right…… Well, for the time being I think it might be a good idea to go back to River’s End and investigate the trail that Rein just told us about……」

「But we are not quite done yet with interviewing the surviving villagers, aren’t we?」

Yes, we still had a couple more survivors to interview about the Pagos village incident.

Some people were just too traumatized and emotionally scared from this incident to be able to listen to what we had to say, much less to be able to retell what they saw on that day.

Perhaps such people might have important information that could benefit our investigation. It was something that was worth looking into.

With that fact in mind, I was not too sure if leaving this place was the correct course of action. Not if we could stumble across some potentially valuable lead.

「Well then, how about we split up for the time being? One group will stay here to collect more information, while the other will go back to River’s End and investigate that Iris person.」

「…… No, let’s not do that.」

After a moment of thinking deeply to herself, Cell shook her head.

「Our enemy, the Devil, is a being that possesses a tremendous amount of power under its belt. If I had to hazard a rough guess here as to what its identity must be, it would most probably be……」

「One of the Ultimate Species……?」

「Yes, that’s exactly what I was thinking here.」

It was something that we have come across after hearing from various survivors around the village.

Even if Pagos was a remote village far away from civilization, it would not be normally possible to destroy it all at once, no matter how small it was.

There was also the fact that there were apparently some Adventurers there at the crime scene, but the Devil was so overwhelmingly powerful that those Adventurers did not stand a chance against it.

None of us got the chance to actually see the Pagos village with our own eyes, but still……

From the descriptions that we have heard, the result of the Devil’s arrival was as if a natural cataclysm rolled over the entire village, leaving only death and destruction in its wake.

So, the Devil was the kind of existence that commanded such a ridiculous amount of power, and was able to unleash it with ease.

Which means that the possibility of the Devil actually being one of the Ultimate Species was quite high, indeed.

「And if our enemy here really was one of the Ultimate Species, then I could clearly see why splitting our party in two groups might not be the wisest choice out there. I mean…… It’s not like we were actively going to look for a fight with it, and we would certainly not go down that easily, but it was much better to avoid unnecessary danger rather than dive headfirst into it.」

「Yes, that’s right. If this Iris person really turns out to be our culprit, then meeting her right now would be something that we would really not want to happen.」

「I will inform the Adventurers’ Guild that the potential culprit is a girl who can still be in the vicinity of River’s End, along with the information we got from our interviews. I think that this is going to be more than enough for now. And since our time for this investigation is fairly limited, let’s wait with any further notifications after we are going to be done with investigating matters around River’s End. Are you okay with that course of action?」

「Yes, let’s go with that for the time being.」

「Nyaaah…… So, in other words, what does that even mean?」

Kanade asked us while rolling her eyes over and over again.

It seems that our conversation just now managed to overload her brain with tons of new knowledge.

I mean, it’s not like we were talking about anything that difficult or complex in the first place, but……

Should we perhaps give her some time to let all of those information sink in for the time being?

「For the time being, let’s just continue with our investigation here, see what we are going to learn from all that.」

「Nyaaah! I see! Well then, what do you want me to do!?」

「Hmm, let’s see……」

With the exception of a few villagers who seemed to be too shaken to be of any use for our interviews, we were more or less done with getting to know what exactly transpired on that day in the Pagos village.

And if that was the case, then our next course of action should naturally be……

It was then that we heard a familiar voice calling out to us.

When we turned around, we saw Ax’s figure approaching.

He seemed to be in a hurry as he was practically running towards us at full speed.

「What’s wrong? Are you done with the search of the village’s perimeter?」

「Don’t tell me that you actually managed to find something?

「N-No, unfortunately, I was unable to find anything that could be of use to us.」

「Well then, why did you come back here?」

「Ah, no, it’s just that…… There is this little thing that I t-t-thought that I should tell you about right away. That’s why I came back here……」

Cell stared at Ax in an annoyed way as he just made a really sloppy excuse.

Surely, that was the exact thing that Cell meant when she said that Ax was only going to get in the way of us interviewing the villagers.

「A little thing? What is that? Come on, spit it out already!」

「Umm…… It would be way faster to show you rather than trying to explain it to you. Come over here! Quick!」

「Ah…… Hey!? What are you……!?」

Ax pulled Cell by the hand as he started to go somewhere.

While he was doing that, he also turned towards Kanade and I.

「Come on! Rein! Kanade! You go as well! Quick! On the double!」

「And where exactly are we even going?」

「Towards the entrance to the village. You two are C Rank Adventurers, right? So you are going to know it right away when you see it.」

What was he even talking about here?

I wondered about that, but ultimately decided to do as Ax said for now and we followed right after him.

Together with Kanade, who also tilted her head to the side in the apparent puzzlement, we headed towards the entrance of the village.
