CHAPTER 135: THE HERO’S ACHIEVEMENTS PART 1

「My, oh my…… If it isn’t Rein is see there!」

Arios seemed to have noticed me amongst the crowd of people and raised his hand lightly as if to say hello to me and my group.

The fact that he happened upon us all the way out here, in the Jizu village, must have been something completely unexpected for him, as his eyes widened in surprise almost as soon as he saw me.

However, that expression of surprise quickly disappeared from his face and was replaced with a nonchalant and relaxed smile.

「Hey there, it’s been a while. How have you been? Life’s been treating you well?」

「Well, I guess you could say that. What about you, Arios?」

「As you can clearly see, we are doing fine as well. I mean, it’s something to be expected, but still.」

「Why are you even here, then?」

「Well, that should really be my line here, but…… Oh well, nevermind that. I guess that I can let you in on a special piece of information. For old time’s sake.」

With a proud smile on his face, Arios straightened his back as he got ready to apparently lecture me about something.

「The fact that you are here means that you are also involved in that recent incident, isn’t that right, Rein?」

「If by the “incident” you mean the one relating to the Pagos village, then…… Is it something about the Devil?」

「Oh, yes, that’s right. For you see, I was actually the one who saved the villagers of Pagos.」

「What do you mean by that?」

「For you see, we were just in the middle of traversing through the Southern Continent when we happened to stumble across the Pagos village completely by accident. At that time the village was right in the middle of being attacked by the Devil or whatever you want to call that thing, and so we fought and repelled it from there.」

「You? Repelled the Devil’s attack……?」

「Nyaah…… That’s a fat lie.」

Kanade, who was listening to Arios’s words all along, glared at Arios with her eyes squinted into thin slits.

「There’s no way that you would ever be able to do that. You don’t have the power necessary to fight an opponent like that head on and emerge victorious. So that has to be a lie.」

「Are you calling me a liar……? Tsk, as always, you are one hell of a rude and uncultured beast, aren’t you?」

「Arios, I get that Kanade insulted you just now, but calling her a beast is a little bit too much, don’t you think……?」

「Are you trying to tell me not to insult your companions? Well, it’s not like I can’t understand where you are coming from. But in this case, wouldn’t you say that she is actually the one at fault here? I just told you the truth as it happened to unfold, and she accused me of being a liar because of it.」

「T-This is……」

Arios’s reasoning here was actually rather solid and it made a whole lot of sense.

I knew that Kanade Kanade hated Arios with a burning passion for all the things that he and his cronies did to me, so I guess that’s why she doubted every word that he would say……

So if you were to think about it calmly and rationally, Kanade was clearly the one at fault here.

But that being said, I was actually thinking the same kind of thing that Kanade was.

Would Arios and his Party really possess enough power and skill to be able to drive the Devil away from Pagos on their own like that? Because honestly, I was having my doubts about that fact.

True, it’s been quite some time since our two Parties clashed against one another, and it might not be a complete lie that Arios and his companions have become stronger.

That’s why I knew that doubting Arios’s power as a Hero might have been a foolish thing to do.

But…… there was still something about his story that was not sitting quite right with me.

Is it possible that the Devil would appear at Pagos village precisely around the time that Arios and his Party were going through that region of the Southern Continent?

The timing of the incident and Arios coming there seemed way too convenient…… and it got me really curious.

When I stroked her head in an attempt to calm her down a little bit, her bristling tail dropped down as she managed to relax a little bit. But only a little bit.

「No matter what you think of me, it doesn’t change the fact that what I’m saying here is the truth. And if you still have your doubts, then how about you ask around and find out for yourself?」

Arios then pointed to the Pagos villagers that were gathered around him.

Just like before, the villagers were expressing their utmost respect and gratitude towards Arios, adoring him like some sort of idol.

I don’t think that they were acting here, as they had no reason to do that in the first place.

So, it’s an undeniable fact that Arios saved the Pagos village from the Devil, huh?

「What about Aggath and everyone else?」

「We are all acting independently now.」

「What does that even mean?」

「Hey, hey, now! Why do I have to confess to you what I have been doing, Rein? Please remind me, who are we to one another right now, exactly? Because I don’t think that we are companions, and we are not even friends.」

「…… Yes, that’s right. I might have overstepped my boundaries there.」

「As long as you understand that, it’s all good. So?」

「Hm?」

「Rein, you tried to grill me as to what I’m doing here, but I didn’t hear your reason for being here in the first place.」
