CHAPTER 141: IRIS’S THOUGHTS

The man was running down a small back alley in River’s End.

He was running away as fast as he could, sweating all over and bleeding, tears dripping from his eyes.

Why did this happen to him?

The man did not have a legitimate job or source of income.

He was just a criminal living in the underbelly of River’s End, running the streets from the shadows.

He would terrorize the weak, sometimes use violence completely needlessly, and extort money from them.

He’s been involved in everything from extortion of money to kidnappings, murders, human trafficking and much more.

But still, the man was never caught red-handed in the act.

That is why he was able to cleverly evade the Knights Order’s investigation every single time.

At times, he had gotten out of trouble by offering them bribes and expensive gifts, when money wasn’t enough for him to weasel his way out of trouble.

So the man hadn’t thought about this one bit throughout his entire life. That the roles would one day get reversed.

He had never imagined for a single moment that a day would come when he would go from the position of the hunter to the one being hunted.

But even so……

Right about now, the man was being chased like a wild animal would be.

「W-What the fuck!? The fuck is that monster……!?」

It was supposed to be an easy job.

Just like usual, the man would skulk the city at night, looking for some easy target to rob or kidnap. It was business as usual.

At that moment, something fell right in front of the man.

It fell to the ground in a raggedy manner, rolling around and scattering a red liquid all over the place.

It was a severed head of a human being. And there were lots of them.

All of them had expressions of pure anguish on their faces, and one could imagine that they had met a horrible and gruesome end.

The man let out a shriek when he realized what was going on.

In front of the man, a girl descended from the sky.

She descended slowly and gracefully, as if she had wings on her back, and her feet softly touched the ground.

The man’s voice quivered.

This girl was not what she appeared to be.

It was no exaggeration to say that she was a Demon on the inside.

She was something completely out of this world. Something that possesses power so overwhelming that she could kill all of the man’s powerful subordinates in an instant.

「Why…… Why the fuck are you doing this…….!? Who the fuck do you think I am, you bitch……!?」

「T-The fuck……!?」

「I was hoping to hear a few more words from you, something maybe a little bit more creative? But you turned out to be so boring. The only thing you could hope to muster were a bunch of cliché words like that……」

「W-What the fuck is that suppossed to……!?」

「You’re boring me. I don’t need you anymore. Goodbye.」

In the next moment, the man’s head was separated from his body.

The man’s consciousness vanished, not understanding what had happened to him in the slightest.

The girl…… Iris let out a long sigh while boring observing the pool of blood forming on the ground.

She then blurted out as she rolled the man’s severed head in her palm of her hands, just like a toy of some sort.

「I can hunt humans as much as I like, so this is really fine, but…… This kind of thing lacks texture, lacks the excitement. It’s boring to be dealing with this kind of garbage all the time.」

With a loud plop, she threw away the man’s head.

「…… Oh well, let’s just clean up for now, shall we?」

Iris’s shadow spread out unnaturally.

Larger than her body right about now, the shadow stretched out across the entire back alleyway.

When the men’s bodies touched the shadow, they would slowly sink right into them.

There was the sound of munching and chewing that could be heard.

The men’s remains were being eaten.

She licked her lips with her tongue in a lustful manner.

「But…… But still, this is not nearly enough. I need souls of greater quality…… And more of them…… Way, way more……」

Iris was literally devouring the souls of these men.

She was devouring them like a snack.

It should have been a horrific act, but there was not an ounce of guilt on Iris’ face.

It was only natural that things would be that way.

She had a natural look on her face, as if she was saying that such a turn of events was only something to be expected.

「Well then…… What should I do now, I wonder?」

Stroking her chin with her hand, Iris looked as though all of a sudden she was deep in her own thoughts.

Iris has made a deal with a certain human.

She was willing to obey the human’s orders in return for setting her free after many years of imprisonment.

She obeyed the human’s word and did not kill everyone in the village of Pagos.

She only slaughtered about a third of the village’s population.

After that, she pretended to fight lightly with the humans who came to “save” the village and then retreated.

From then on, she had been busy waiting for instructions from the human that set her free.

A promise was made between them that she would not cause any major incidents while she was waiting.

Therefore, Iris was only able to make these light nibbles at random humans and snack lightly from time to time.
