CHAPTER 142: THE DISASTER, ONCE AGAIN PART 1

We descended from the mountain back to the ruins of the village of Pagos.

Just to be sure, we did some research based on the information we got from the mountain, but we couldn’t really find any new clues.

So it would seem that the one holding the key to solving this mystery was indeed Arios.

And the memories of that dead Adventurer that Sora and Luna related to us……

What has Arios gotten himself into this time around?

We had to question him directly if we ever wanted to get some proper answers.

Ax and Cell seemed to be still half-convinced that the Hero would have anything to do with an incident like that…… But on the other hand they did not have nearly enough material to deny Sora and Luna’s words, so they were convinced for the time being and played along.

Thus, we went back to the Jizu village in order to meet with Arios.

「Nyaah…… It feels like it’s been ages since we have last been here.」

When we arrived at the Jizu village, Kanade said something along those lines.

I mean, it was not really all that surprising of a feeling. After all, we have spent several days getting to the village of Pagos and going back from it.

So it was only natural to feel as if a way more time than a few days had passed. I would have been more surprised if Kanade didn’t feel that way at all.

「But still…… Isn’t there something wrong with the atmosphere around here?」

Tanya tilted her head slightly as she said that.

Sora and Luna also agreed with her right away.

「That’s right. The atmosphere here sure is strange…… It’s way different from the last time that we were here.」

「For some reason, it makes me all tense and nervous.」

「Could it be that…… something happened?」

Nina’s small body shrank in size as if the heavy and oppressive atmosphere in the air across the entire village was heavily pressing down on her.

Seeing her like that, I patted Nina on the head to reassure her that everything was going to be just fine.

「Hmm…… Thank you, Rein……」

「Don’t worry about it. I am here, so everything is going to be okay. And so is everyone else.」

「…… Yes.」

「And yet…… It is exactly as Sora and Luna are saying. There is something really weird in the air about the village. What’s going on here?」

「Hey!」

It was at this moment that both Ax and Cell returned to our side, after going into the village a moment ago to look around.

They were also in a hurry, and even Cell, who was always so calm and collected, had a really worrying look on her face.

「What’s going on? Did something happen?」

「This is bad, guys! It looks like the Devil has made an appearance once more!」

「Wha……!?」

Did it emerge once again while we just so happened to be away from the village……?

「Ax, your explanation was really lacking. Just look how confused they all are.」

「Oh, yeah, you’re right. Sorry about that, guys.」

「Huh? Sorry for what?

「Ahh, you know, the thing is…… What was the name of that town that is a little bit further away from here? The one that we have come from……?」

「…… River’s End.」

「Oh yeah, that one! That’s it. We have heard that the Devil showed up there.」

「At River’s End?　But why would it show up there of all places……?」

「I don’t know, and I don’t really want to know. That being said, there has been a spree of mysterious murders at River’s End as of late. So we looked into that and……」

「We think that the trail leads directly towards the Devil.」

「H-Hey! That’s my line!」

Ax looked really sulky there for a moment, but Cell was truly unconcerned with that and continued to talk as if nothing had happened.

「It also seems that some of the members of the Strike Team were present in River’s End at the time of Devil’s emergence, and so they engaged it in combat.」

「…… And the result of that?」

「Total annihilation of the Strike Team.」

Cell said that with a bitter expression.

I have heard that this Emergency Request could only be accepted if you have the right Rank and abilities to match that rank.

And yet, none of the team members survived the battle and they were all wiped out……

So apparently, our enemy might be even more formidable than we might have thought.

「But that’s not all. I don’t know if we can call it a blessing in disguise, but we were able to obtain some information on the Devil as well. It seems the Devil has left River’s End and is heading straight for Jizu Village as we speak.」

「Towards this village……」

「And since we had no way to actually do some much needed information control, the news got leaked to the people and now everyone in the village knows that the Devil is out there and that it is coming for them.」

「So that would explain it, huh?」

No wonder the whole village was so tense.

The Devil that destroyed the village of Pagos and spread carnage and destruction across River’s End was approaching fast.

Knowing such a thing would frighten everyone, without a shred of a doubt.

I was rather surprised that the villagers didn’t pack their things and made a run for it from here in panic.

「What is the future course of events going to be? Did you manage to obtain some intel on that?」

「We have checked with the Guild and they are planning to intercept the Devil on its way near Jizu village. There’s also a different Strike Team on their way here as we speak.」

「Will they actually make it in time?」

「We don’t know anything about that. Same for the Devil. We don’t know how much mobility it actually has. So there is a chance that it will be able to arrive in the village before the Strike Team gets here.」

「Then I guess that it will be entirely up to us to stop it once it gets here.」

「Yeah, you got that part right.」

It certainly is going to be bummer that the main Strike Team is not here to back us up, but……

It’s not like we are going to just let ourselves be defeated so easily.

Everyone is here with me, and even if we’re dealing with a Devil, even if we are going to be unable to defeat it ourselves, I am sure that we can at least stall it long enough for the main Strike Force to arrive.

It’s just that……

Our opponent here is an entity of which we know virtually nothing about.

How much power does this thing even have? That’s what worries me here the most.

If I could, I wouldn’t want to put everyone’s lives in any kind of unnecessary danger.
