CHAPTER 143: A REUNION AND A CONFRONTATION PART 1

「The Devil is here…… The hell is that supposed to mean!? Hey, Cell!! Didn’t you say just now that it should take it at least a couple of days to come here!?」

「Yes, because that should have been the case here, but…… Does that mean that the Devil can move from one place to another faster than we expected? But even so, if we were to assume the worst case scenario, there should have still been some sort of leeway for us to take advantage of……」

Ax, visibly flustered with the sudden announcement of the Devil’s arrival, turned towards Cell and asked her.

However, Cell also seemed to be as confused as he was, and doesn’t seem to have a clear answer for him to possibly explain why something like that was happening in the first place.

The eyebrows of the pair of A Rank Adventurers were furrowed in heavy doubt.

「Anyways, this isn’t the time for us to just be standing around here and doing nothing!」

「That voice…… It came from the direction of the entrance to the village!」

Kanade took the lead in going forward and we followed right behind her.

Just like that, we ran straight towards the entrance to the village……

The one standing at the entrance to the village was none other than the silver-haired girl I had met earlier in River’s End’s back alleys.

Those who had no idea who she was or what had happened were looking at her with curiosity, wondering what this was all about.

But those who knew what had happened and who she was…… Mainly the survivors from the Pagos village, started to scream in fear and panic.

Some of those people were actually so overcome with fear that they collapsed to the ground, unable to maintain their consciousness and sanity.

Looking at those villagers and their reactions, Iris…… She only smiled.

She was looking down on them, just like a human being would look down on a mere bug, and she was smiling happily.

When I met her back in River’s End, she seemed to be a strange and peculiar girl, but right now……

Right now, that was not the case. It was something else entirely.

I could feel a clear malice and genuine madness emanating from her.

And the amount of those negative emotions was so much that you could almost see them with a naked eye, just oozing out of her.

That girl was truly something else. In a truly terrifying sense.

It was then that all of a sudden, Iris’s gaze caught mine.

「…… Oh my? Oh my, oh my? Oh, my, oh my, oh my? You are……」

「Long time no see, huh, Iris?」

「Yes, I suppose that it has truly been a while. Good day to you, Rein-san.」

Iris picked up the hem of her skirt and bowed her head politely towards me.

If the circumstances were not the way they were right now and we were meeting in a place quite different from this one, Iris could have certainly pass for a noble woman of high birth.

「Fufufu…… For us to be meeting once more in a place like this, I wonder if it’s fate at play here?」

「Yes, that may actually be so.」

「Oh my, I didn’t think you would be so ready to accept that fact so willingly?」

「That is only because the timing here is way too good for this to be a mere coincidence…… Or at the very least, I want to think that way.」

「Fufufu. I knew it, you really are a truly mysterious gentleman, Rein-san. It’s that kind of a trait that I cannot bring myself to dislike or hate.」

Iris then laughed softly.

But nevertheless……

We couldn’t bring ourselves to bring our guards down, even though Iris was not attacking us right away.

Rather, for some reason, ever since we met her, there was this really nasty and bad premonition that’s been growing stronger and stronger deep inside of my chest.

Everyone seemed to feel the same way about this, and they were ready to move onto the offensive or defensive at any moment.

「Hey! What is this commotion all about!?」’

An Adventurer on guard duty at the Jizu village heard the commotion at the entrance and came forward to see what this was all about.

The Adventurer seemed to have determined that the source of the commotion was Iris at a moment’s glance.

However, he couldn’t seem to judge the threat level that she was oozing out and just casually walked up to her, completely unguarded and unconcerned.

The Adventurer then touched Iris’s shoulder.

In a single instant, Iris’s face turned grim.

It was kind of a look as if her shoulder just now was touched by a mass of walking garbage and filth.

「Could you please refrain from touching me so casually?」

「What did you say!?」

「A mere human touching me so casually…… Know your place, you worm!」

「What the hell……!? Gyah!?」

Iris shook off the Adventurer’s hand violently as if she was shooing away a nasty fly or a pesky mosquito.

But the strength of that act alone was more than enough to send the Adventurer flying several meters away from here.

The Adventurer would then come to a stop on the fence surrounding the entire village, hitting it with his back at full power and passing out on the spot.

「Oh my, you’re still alive? You’re a tenacious one, aren’t you? As expected from a pesky little bug, I suppose……」

Iris then waved her hands up in the air…… Oh no! Not good!

　I hurriedly activated the mechanism inside of Narukami and ejected the wire from the gauntlet.

The shot wire managed to entangle itself around Iris’s arm just in the nick of time.

「…… Why would you even interrupt me, Rein-san?」

「Of course I would try to interrupt you…… Iris. You, just now…… Just now you were trying to kill that Adventurer, didn’t you?」

「Hm? Why, yes, of course I did.」

Iris let out a small chuckle.

It was not as if she was guided by some sort of evil intentions behind her actions.

In other words…… She just so happened to believe with all of her heart that killing that Adventurer was the right thing to do.

She didn’t believe even for a moment that her actions were wrong here.

This girl is really dangerous.

It was just now that I finally realized that.

「If you touch something that is filthy and dirty, it is only natural that you want to sterilize and disinfect it, right? But you see, doing just that is not nearly enough for me. I need to make the root of the filth itself disappear from the face of the earth. Only then I can feel satisfied.」
