CHAPTER 15: DRAGON’S POWER TEST PART 1

I broke out into a cold sweat in an instant.

I felt a pressure that did not compare to the pressure I felt the other day when I was confronted by that Killer Tiger or even the King Lizard.

The Dragon did not do anything other than just staring down at us, but that action alone was more than enough to make me want to pass out on the spot.

The Champion of the Sky.

Lord of the Heavens.

The Destroyer of Worlds.

The most powerful Ultimate Species when it comes to raw strength alone —— a Dragon.

「Why is there a dragon in a place such as this……?」

「Could it be…… that this dragon is that baddie that we are looking for?」

「Surely it’s not…… right? That cannot be the case.」

Fortunately enough, even at times like this, Kanade’s presence at my side helped me to regain my composure relatively quickly, even if it was only for a little bit.

What we heard at the Guild was that “’someone” was running amok on the bridge.

If a Dragon had appeared in a place such as this, it wouldn’t be such a vague and simple story.

And it wasn’t before long that the Dragon assumed a humanoid form.

「…… It…… it transformed!?」

When the bright light finally cleared, there was a girl standing in the place where Dragon was standing just now.

She looked to be about the same age as Kanade…… so maybe fifteen or so?

And that girl surely was as beautiful as Kanade was.

Her hair was so long that it almost reached her feet.

From her crisp expression, you could get the impression that she was a strong-willed person.

However, while the form that she assumed now looked humanoid, it was not a completely human appearance.

She also had horns and a tail…… and you could see some scales left on her face and arms.

The girl then pointed at the still stunned me and asked:

「You…… You’re an Adventurer, aren’t you?」

「H-Huh……?」

「H-Hey!? Are you deaf!? Weren’t you listening!? You should listen when people are talking to you!」

「O-Ohh…… I-I’m sorry. It’s just that…… I was a little bit surprised, that’s all.」

「So, you could hear me just fine, huh? Then answer when asked! For crying out loud…… So? You are an Adventurer, right?」

「W-Well…… Yes, that’s right.」

For the time being, we needed as much information as we could gather here.

So I decided to answer the girl’s question honestly and nodded with a coy smile on my lips.

「Well then, this means that you will have to compete with me!」

「…… Umm, compete? Like, a match? What do you mean by that?」

「A duel. And a duel is just that — a duel. You still don’t get it? What I’m saying here is this: let’s have a power contest!」

「No, I know what the word ‘duel’ means but what I’m asking here is why would you do something like that in the first place?」

「Simply, because I want to!」

Alright, it’s no use. I can’t understand her reasoning at all.

And on the other hand, I could already feel that my head was starting to hurt just from how unreasonable that girl seemed to be.

「Nyah? Could it be that…… Are you perhaps, a Red Dragon?」

Kanade, who seemed to have some idea of who our Dragon-girl was, said something like that.

「Oh? What’s this? You happen to know about my kind?」

「Yes, I do know about you. The Red Dragons are famous and widely known for wanting to fight a whole lot.」

「Don’t make me sound like I’m some sort of a battle maniac, will you? But wait, aren’t you a Cat Spirit Tribe?」

「Yeah, that’s right! I’m Kanade of the Cat Spirit Race. It’s nice to meet you!」

「I am Tanya of the Dragon Tribe!　I know that we are about to fight, but I hope that we can get along in the near future.」

And just like that, the Red Dragon introduced herself to us.

Kanade’s communication skills are not half bad, it would seem.

Well, in Kanade’s case, it feels like she is just talking with the use of her natural instincts rather than thinking about what she is doing too much.

「A contest of strength……? So wait, does that mean…… Could it be that you are the “Watchdog” who’s been rampaging on the Stride Bridge as of late?」

「Hey! Don’t call me weird names like that! You make me sound bad, as if I’m some unruly bandit or someone like that. I have a proper name, I’ll let you know! It’s Tanya! It’s the dragon name that was given to me, and I am rather fond of it myself!」

「Well then, do you mind if we just call you by your name for now? That would make things a whole lot easier.」

「Sure, I don’t mind. You have my permission to do just that.」

「So, Tanya? Are you the one who’s been rampaging on this bridge as of late?」

「Well, I still don’t like the way in which you phrased that question, because it makes me sound really bad, but…… Well, yes. You are generally right in thinking that.」

And she admitted to it so easily.

This is…… troubling.

Yes, this is really troubling.

I didn’t really expect to find that a genuine Dragon was behind this entire incident……

How am I supposed to accomplish such an unreasonable request now?

「Alright, then! Let’s get this test of strength on the road, shall we!?」

「H-Huh? Wait, wait, wait, wait! I still don’t understand what’s going on here!? Why are you even doing this, Tanya!?」

「The Red Dragons are a really annoying bunch when it comes to their behavior. It’s about their codes of conduct, or something like that, if I recall correctly, nya.」

Unexpectedly, Kanade delivered me the answer.

「When they turn fifteen, they are to travel all over the world in order to become full-fledged, strong, and respectable dragons, is that it?　It’s such an annoying rule.」

「Oh my, you surely know a lot about us Dragon, huh? Hmm, did you say that your name was…… Kanade? Is that right?」

「Yup! I’m Kanade~♪!」

「’Hmmm … a top-notch Adventurer and a member of the Cat Spirit Tribe…… Talk about being lucky! Such strong opponents at the same time!」
