CHAPTER 164: WHO WAS THE ONE THAT SEALED HER? PART 1

After we parted our ways with Ax and Cell……

We decided to look for a way to seal Iris once again. This time for good.

Once again, we dedicated to question the villagers about it……

We were even going through the rest of the literature and other written sources that were available in the village……

By doing that, we were hoping to stumble on potential clues or snippets of information.

As for the results of all our searching……

「Fuuh…… Well, this isn’t really going too well……」

I let out a loud and long sigh as I sat down on the bench in the village’s square.

For a while we were conducting all kinds of research on the subject of a possible Celestial Tribe sealing method, but ultimately we were unable to find any useful clues.

There was nothing on Iris. And nothing about the seal.

There were people who knew some bits and pieces on both of those subjects, but it was the kind of knowledge that was barely scratching the surface. And we needed something that would delve deeper.

But I guess it was something that couldn’t really be helped all that much.

After all, those were the events of many years ago, so it was only natural that not that many people would be able to remember anything about it.

We were hoping for maybe one or two people who would be able to remember SOMETHING…… But I guess it was a really naive idea.

However, this was only the beginning of our research on this subject, so there was no way that we would simply give up after an initial setback. So there was no use getting depressed here.

Iris had taken a fair amount of direct damage in that earlier battle.

It would only stand to reason that she shouldn’t be able to take any action right away after the battle ended, and would need appropriate time to heal her wounds.

So I don’t think that the clash between Iris and the main Strike Team was something that would be happening anytime soon……

But still, we couldn’t exactly afford to take it easy.

With every moment that we were wasting, we were this much closer to running out of time.

We needed to make sure that we do what we can now, and that we do it quickly.

「Rein.」

I turned around and saw Kanade and everyone else right beside me.

Kanade was holding a cup and held it out to me.

「Are you perhaps thirsty?　I got you some cold water to drink.」

「Thank you.」

I accepted the cup and poured the ice cold water down my throat.

And once I did that, my head felt instantly clearer and my mind felt refreshed.

「Alright then.」

I guess it means that break time’s over!

So let’s try a little bit harder to look for those clues now!

「How did everyone else do? Any luck so far?」

We had agreed to go our separate ways for the time being and investigate in different places and on different subjects, so that we could cover more ground that way……

I wondered what the outcomes of those separate investigations would be?

I asked that with great anticipation in my heart, but……

「Nyaah…… I’m sorry, Rein. But I didn’t manage to find anything in particular.」

Kanade’s tail hung down in a heap as she told me that.

Everyone else also made some rather difficult expressions and shook their heads in a gesture of negation.

「Oh, I…… I see……」

「I’m sorry.」

「You don’t have to apologize. It’s not like it’s your fault or anything like that, Kanade. And neither anyone else’s.」

But I wonder…… What are we supposed to do now?

It’s not like I intended to give up on our investigationI don’t intend to give up on the investigation, but without a clue of any kind for us to work with, we couldn’t even formulate a cohesive course of action.

It doesn’t matter what it is, but it would be really nice if there was even the smallest clue out there for us to latch on, but……

「…… Rein, in this situation, I have a small suggestion for you.」

After a hesitant pause, Luna opened her mouth.

「How about we try to find out who it was exactly who managed to seal Iris away all those years ago?」

「I mean yeah, sure. It would be really nice for us to be able to find out about that, but…… How would we even do that?」

「We shall use some Special Magic to find this out.」

「Luna. That’s a rather poor explanation if I do say so myself.」

「What!? You say that my explanation wasn’t sufficient just now!?」

「Yes, that’s right. It was not. You Useless Little Sister.」

「Useless Little Sister!?」

Luna was so shocked by Sora’s sharp comment that she literally went speechless for a moment out there.

Nevertheless, even though that retort seemed to be on point, there was something else that actually picked my interest there..

「Umm…… What exactly do you mean by that?　I need you to elaborate on it a little bit more.」

「Umu. Do you remember the time we went to see the site where the shrine was located? We used our Memory Search magic on the corpse of that Adventurer to see what events transpired there, didn’t we?」

「Yes. And since it was just the other day, so I remember it quite well.」

「With the application of the same Memory Search magic, we can explore the memories of the site of the shrine as well. We can go back in time inside of the memory of the place itself, and try to find out who created the seal that imprisoned Iris in the first place.」

「Wow, you can do that kind of magic as well? Well then, why didn’t you say so sooner? It would have spared us quite a lot of trouble.」

Tanya’s words seemed to be on point here, but Luna only answered her with a rather difficult expression on her face.

「You see, the longer it takes to go back to the past, the more difficult the magic of exploring the memories becomes. Iris was sealed more than a hundred years ago or so…… We have never tried to search for memories that long ago, either. The chances of us actually failing the search are quite high, so I thought it would be a bad idea to place all of our hopes on something that might not even work out. That’s why we kept quiet about it.」

「However, at the current moment it would seem that we have no other choice but to give this a try. That is why we can try to do it now, as a sort of last resort…… Well, if we still end up failing, it will be a tremendous waste of our time, but at the very least we won’t be able to say that we didn’t try everything that we could.」

「Fumuh.」
