CHAPTER 175: A PATH ON WHICH COMPROMISE IS NO LONGER AN OPTION PART 1

For the time being, Tanya was flying in circles above Ax and Cell’s heads.

As if following her movements, lines of bright light would fly her way from the ground time after time.

The light was traversing the road from the ground towards the sky, as if the order of gravity had been reversed for each and every single beam.

Rays of light were being shot out of Cell’s bow one after another, relentlessly aiming at us.

「What the hell are those guys even doing!?」

「Tanya, you better land at once! If you keep on flying like that, you are only going to make yourself a huge target for them!」

「Roger that!」

Tanya nodded her head and put some distance between ourselves and Ax and Cell, just so that we would be outside of the effective range of Cell’s bow.

Once she did that, she could finally land on the ground and she returned to her human form.

In the meantime, Ax and Cell have closed the distance between us.

They stopped as far as their voices could reach, not going even an inch closer.

「That’s one hell of an abrupt greeting that you guys gave us just now.」

I threw those words at them, wary of their intentions and ready for a fight at any moment now.

「Terribly sorry about that. I was surprised when that dragon appeared out of nowhere, and I attacked him without thinking.」

「But it was actually me who shot from my bow? You did nothing, Ax.」

「…… Is that true?」

「What do you mean by that?」

「Don’t you think that this attack was a little bit TOO bold, even for someone like you?」

After all, their presumed opponent was none other than a dragon.

For all that they knew, this dragon could have been native to this particular region, so if it wasn’t going to attack them, they could have left it all alone and just allowed it to do its thing.

Usually, that’s what a cautious Adventurer would do.

It was entirely possible that Ax and Cell attacked us while fully understanding that it was us just now……

In response, Ax smiled wryly at us.

「Good grief…… I can see that your instincts are as keen as ever, Rein. Let me guess: you think that we knew full well that you were coming just now, and that’s why we attacked you, right? So that we could get ourselves rid of you all, right?」

「The answer here is…… Yes, that’s right.」

「…… You admit to that pretty easily. You didn’t even try to deny it.」

「I don’t think that any attempt at deception here would have made that much sense. Do you?」

「Okay, so then, why did you do that just now?」

Tanya asked in an aggressive tone, glaring at the two Adventurers.

Not to be outdone by the sheer intensity of her glare, Ax replied quietly.

「Judging from the fact that the direction in which you guys were heading is the same direction where the Devil is supposed to lurk…… I would hazard a guess that you have actually found a way to seal the Devil away, right?」

「Yes, that’s right.」

「…… Yeah, I thought as much. Well, since we happened to officially break up, I didn’t really care if you were going to find whatever it was that you were looking for or not, but for you to actually find a way to seal her away…… And doing that in such a short amount of time, given the circumstances at hand…… You guys are way bigger of a deal than you yourselves might realize.」

「So, from the fact that you are saying all that…… I guess that the two of you are dead set on interrupting us with trying to seal Iris away, is that right?」

「Yeah, you pretty much guessed it.」

Cell nodded her head in affirmation, and spoke in a quiet…… Really quiet voice.

「The higher-ups have made the decision to take the Devil out for good. This means that the option of sealing her away is officially off the table from this point onwards.」

「So, surely you know what that means, right?」

Ax spoke to us with a hopeful expression on his face, as if to say that this was going to be our last chance to stop doing what we were doing and join them in fighting for the only rightful cause here.

「Even if you get lucky and manage to seal the Devil away once more, that seal will too be broken sooner or later, just like it happened this time around. And once that happens, the Devil will be free once more. And if that ends up happening, then that would mean that everything that you did here was basically meaningless and in vain. Not to mention that it would basically create all sorts of trouble for the possible future generations, which I absolutely won’t allow to happen! It would only serve to leave a nasty aftertaste in my mouth. So we have to take care of the Devil right here and right now, once and for all.」

「So, does this mean that you are absolutely hell-bent on killing her?」

「Yes, that’s right.」

Ax nodded his head without any kind of hesitation.

「Rein, I can understand your sympathy for the Devil. I really do. To be perfectly honest, I feel a little sorry for her, too. But that being said…… Just because she happened to had horrible things done to her and her entire tribe in the past doesn’t give her any right to seek revenge on unrelated people of the present. Wouldn’t you agree?」

「……………」

「Besides, she already happened to kill so many innocent people. And she was lusting for even more death and destruction, as you yourselves surely had seen. She’s killed without hesitation and she took pleasure in doing so. So there is no way that someone like that would be able to stop doing that now, just because someone asked her to stop.」

「……………」

「You see, when it comes to hatred, it is not something that is simply going to disappear with the passage of time. It’s something that you can hold onto for a long, long time, and it is only going to grow stronger and more vile. At least that’s what I think about it. So there’s nothing we can do about it when it comes to the Devil herself. There’s nothing we as humans can do when it comes to the sins that our ancestors had committed. Only thing we can do right now is to kill that monster and stop it from sowing more pointless death and destruction.

Deep down inside, I knew that Ax was in the right here.

The arguments that he spoke right now were solid and there was nothing that someone like me would be able to rebuke them.
