CHAPTER 19: A NEW REQUEST
Just like that, Tanya the Red Dragon joined our group and……
The next day.
After receiving a new request, the three of us moved to the plains outside of the city once again.
This time around the request was to defeat a group of Slimes.
The reward for this request is based on a percentage system, which changes according to the number of slimes defeated by the Adventurers.
The Slime is an F-ranked monster, a small fry, if you were to put it in more descriptive terms, and the one that even a child can defeat with literal ease.
Hence, they are not considered a threat and are often left alone, but….
They have been neglected so much that they managed to multiply in large numbers, almost growing out of control.
At the current moment, there are more than one hundred of them roaming about the fields.
They even attack animals, livestock, and fields with the force of destroying the ecosystem of the plains
.
Sometimes, they would even grow as bold as to attack other people.
The situation already reached the point where the slimes could no longer be ignored, and the Guild was asked to help.
「Nya, Slimes, huh?」
Kanade let out a disheartened voice for some reason.
「What is it, Kanade? Are you perhaps afraid of the Slimes?」
「Nyau, no, that’s not it.」.
Tanya said mischievously, and Kanade puffed out her cheeks in discontent.
「’There’s no way the Cat Spirit Tribe would be afraid of a mere Slime! If I were to get my hands on one of them, I would dispose of them swiftly and without issues! But…… I don’t like Slimes because of how squishy and sticky they are…… Nyaaah, so gooey.」
「Oh, yeah. That’s right.」
「You’re right. Those guys are basically like lumps of sticky mucus, aren’t they? So it’s small wonder that Kanade, someone specializing in mainly physical attacks, would have a rather hard time with fighting them.」
「Nyauh……」
「Well then, don’t you worry about that. When it comes to Slimes, I can always eviscerate them all at once with one of my fireballs or fire breaths.」
「Oooh Tanya, you’re so reliable!」
「Fufufuh! Keep them compliments coming!」
「Tanya, you’re amazing! Tanya, you’re the best!」
I was initially worried about the two of them getting along, because their personalities were not meshing all that well after that initial encounter……
But apparently, my worries were all baseless.
Tanya may seem standoffish at times, but in the end she is kind and has a good heart.
She thinks about Kanade properly and tries to help her out with the things that she cannot do on her own, just like right now.
These two could really make a good pair.
「Come on, come on, wherever you are, oh Slimes~♪!」
「‘m going to blow you all away with my fire breath~♪!」
Singing a strange song together, Kanade and Tanya were looking around for some Slimes’ activity.
However, the Slimes were nowhere to be seen.
There shouldn’t be any places to hide in the open plains, not to mention that the entire swarm of one hundred of them would have a difficult time hiding, anyways.
However, the plains outside the city are also wide open.
So they must be hiding somewhere where we couldn’t quite see them, even though they were right in the open.
「Nyah, we can’t seem to find them at all……」
「This is starting to turn into a major pain in the ass. How about I just burn this entire place to ash with my breath all at once?」
「Tanya, I know that this was supposed to be a joke, but you should never say things like that out loud. Not even as a joke.」
「But I was actually quite serious just now, though?」
……… Later, I must make sure to teach Tanya some basic rules of common sense for sure.
「There’s an easy way to actually find them all without having to do anything too outrageous.」
「Hoo, someone’s full of confidence here. What are you going to do about it?」
「We can do some reconnaissance from the sky.」
I called in an ordinary wild bird, not a venomous bird like the last time, and made a temporary contract with it.
「Rein, Rein! What are you going to do? You’re going to use that bird to search for the slimes?」
「But what are your orders? Surely, you’re not just going to ask it to search for the Slimes and lead us there, right?」
「It would be really nice if we could do that, trust me. However, doing just that would be somewhat annoying. After all, using wild animals for directions is not really the best thing that we can do. Sometimes the animals misunderstand the meaning of the command and could take you in a completely opposite direction. And we don’t want to deal with that here.」
「So, what are you going to do?」
「I’m going to synchronize with it.」
「Say what now?」
Tanya looked at me dubiously, as if she didn’t understand what I was saying.
But rather than explaining it with words, it will be quicker to have her see it in person.
I focused my attention on the wild bird that I have made a temporary contract with…… and then I synchronized our senses..
My perspective switched from ‘human’ to that of a ‘wild bird’.
What I see in my field of vision are Kanade and Tanya and also myself.
「H-Huh……? What;s this? Rein’s presence suddenly disappeared and…… Huh? Oh my? What? But Rein is still here and yet……」
「I mean, isn’t Rein’s reaction weird? It’s as if he has become a doll or something like that……」
「THAT’S BECAUSE MY SOUL IS INSIDE OF THAT WILD BIRD’S BODY RIGHT NOW.」
「「Hyah!?」」
The two girls suddenly became startled and let out loud shrieks.
And while they were busy doing that…… I adjusted my gaze to witness my entire surroundings from the bird-eye’s view.
「C-Could it be that……?」
「Rein turned himself into that bird……?」
「Close, but not quite. I’m not very good at complicated explanations, so here’s the abbreviated version: I transferred the part of my soul into this bird and immobilized my consciousness for the time being. So yes, you could say that I switched places with that bird for the time being. You could even say that for the time being, my body is that of this bird, I guess.」
What?
I could see that the two of them had literal question marks floating above their heads from this explanation of mine.
「This is one of the Beast Tamer’s techniques. This one is called ‘Synchronization’, sometimes called ‘Assimilation’.」
「I’ve never heard of such a thing!」
「I’ve never heard of that, either!」
They shouted at me so boldly and loudly that I flinched back a little bit from the discomfort.
I’m a wild bird now, so their voices were really loud and powerful.
「Not only you can use animals and beasts to do your bidding, but you’re transferring your consciousness into their bodies…… Huh? What the? Huh!? Rein, now you are even more unreasonable than ever, nya…… Doing all of those amazing feats as if they were nothing in the first place…… Nyaah, just what is going on here!?」
「R-Rein, no matter how you look at it, this is absolutely outrageous…… I mean, I’ve acknowledged that to a certain extent, but I never thought it would be this outrageous…… It’s an extraordinary thing to have the members of the Ultimate Species as tamed companions, but to use techniques that even we did not know that even existed…… Just like Kanade said, this is something truly unheard of. No, seriously. That’s amazing.」
「Well, I don’t know. Is ‘Synchronization’ really that amazing in the first place? I don’t think that a mere trick like this deserves so much praise……」
「「No! It is! It is a big deal!!!」」
Again, the two of them shouted out loud in perfect sync..
But yeah.
They may think of it as amazing, but for me it is nothing all that out of the ordinary.
Of course, it’s not something that the average person who doesn’t know anything about anything could do right away, but……
I thought that it was something that any Beast Tamer out there would be able to do.
But perhaps, maybe it is my perception of that concept that is wrong in the first place?
「By the way, how are you even able to talk to us right now?」
「I’m delivering my thought waves directly to your minds. You can’t speak the language when you are assimilated with animals, so you supplement your magic to deliver the thought waves directly to other people’s minds. I’m a Beast Tamer, so I don’t have a lot of magical power to begin with, but I have enough magical power to deliver thought waves to people who are near me.」
「Ah, now I see, nya.」

「Seriously, that’s really handy.」
「Okay, I’ll take a look around. In the meantime, you two, please take care of my body.」
「Roger that!」
「Have a safe trip!」
Kanade and Tanya saw me off and I flapped my wings high into the sky.
