Beast Tamer Who Got Kicked Out From the Hero’s Party Chapter 20

CHAPTER 20: THE POWER OF THE DRAGON TRIBE

Kanade and Tanya watched as Rain, now assimilated with the wild bird, fluttered away into the sky.

After a while, Rein went so far that he disappeared into the distant vast sky and……

It was then that suddenly, as if remembering something, Tanya murmured to herself.

「Come to think of it…… Rein said it as if it was something completely natural and simple, but sending one’s thoughts into another person’s mind takes a whole lot of both skill and tremendous amounts of magical power. And when we met for the first time, he didn’t seem to have nearly as much Magic Power to begin with. Oh well, not that there aren’t exceptions to the rules, and things that can and cannot be done tend to be blurry when it comes to magic, but…… When your Magic Power is low, there should be more noise mixed in with his thoughts. And yet, I could hear his voice with great clarity…….」

「…… Hmm? What do you mean by that?」

「Hmm…… How about we check that out when he comes back later, shall we?」

After making two laps around the perimeter, I returned to Kanade and Tanya’s side.

I released my assimilation with the wild bird and returned to my own body.

「Phew…… I knew it, I feel way more relaxed and comfortable inside of my own body. It’s a strange feeling when you assimilate with another creature, you know? I feel like I’ve really become a bird, but if I spend too much time in that different body, I start to become afraid that I might not actually be able to return to my original body.」

「Welcome back~♪!」

「So? Did you manage to learn anything useful?」

「Yes, I actually did. And it’s perfect. I found a large amount of Slimes about five kilometers east of here. I’m pretty sure it’s the pack that we were tasked to take care of.」

「All right then, let’s go. And while we are at it, how about we race to the site where the slimes are? Whoever loses will have to buy everyone else a meal at the end of the day. Ready…… Go!」

「I won’t lose! Just you wait!」

The two girls ran out as fast as they could in hopes of reaching our destination before the other one would reach it.

Of course, there was no way that I would be able to compete with them, and much less beat them.

I mean, I’m the one managing the finances of this party, anyways. So no matter which one of them wins or loses, I am ultimately going to be the one buying the food and drinks.

Goodness gracious, I sighed under my nose as I chased after them.

Just like that, I ran lightly for about three minutes, trying not to use up all of my energy.

Before long, I was able to see the two of them far in the distance.

Even though my physical abilities have been strengthened since I signed a contract with Kanade, I was still unable to catch up with them completely.

「Rein, you’re dead last~♪!」

「Looks like we’ve left you way behind.」

「I mean, since you guys were going so…… Oh well, you know, never mind that. What’s important right now is……」

Around the border of the forest and the plains, there was a blubbering mass buzzing around.

Slimes.

More than a hundred Slimes were swarmed together, dissolving the vegetation and rotting the earth underneath them.

I see.

As expected, we can’t just leave them here like this to do as they please.

If we do that, this is going to turn into a major disaster before long.

「Well then, let’s get this thing over with quickly!」

Kanade then bent her body while she picked up a huge rock with her bare hands.

It was a large rock, several dozen times larger than I was, but she lifted it so easily, as if she didn’t feel the weight of it at all.

「Are you going to smash them all? Just like that?」

「Yeah, I am! Because I really don’t want to touch them if I can help it!」.

「I have a feeling that this is going to be a disaster in more ways than one but, well, it’s certainly very destructive. In more sense than one.」

I mean, our opponents here are Slimes. One hundred of them.

If we wanted to take them out one by one, we would be here all day and then some.

「In that case, can you try attacking the Slimes with your fireballs and fire breath, Tanya? I’m going to take out any stragglers that they two of you might miss.」

「Sure thing, but first I would like to try something out…… Rein, can you use any magic at all?」

「Hm? I can use at least a beginner level’s Heal and Fireball, but that’s about it……」

Back when I was still with the Hero’s Party, I tried to learn some magic on my own, thinking that it might actually be of use to me one day.

But in the end, it seemed that I did not have any talent for magic, because I could only learn some basic and beginner level spells at most.

「Okay, so could you try and attack those Slimes with a Fireball for me really quick……?」

「Sure, but…… is there a point to this? I mean, the Magic Power of Beast Tamer is not all that impressive in the first place……」

「Just do it. Come on, come on, don’t be shy. Oh, and while you are at it, don’t hesitate to give it your all.」

「Alright, alright! I get it, I get it! No need to push me like that! You push me anymore than this, and I might actually bump into those Slimes!」

What in the world does Tania want me to do here?

There’s nothing that particularly interesting or outstanding about my magic……

Anyways, for the time being I might as well do as I was told.

So I focus the Magic Power in the palm of my hand.

I then build a magical structural formula inside of my head.

And finally, I unleash it all at once!

「FIREBALL!!」

Fireball is a beginner’s level of magic that anyone can use, and it can produce a fist-sized ball of fire.

Its power is such that it can kill a single slime no problem.

And yet…..

「Huh?」

「Nyah?」

The fireball I released from my hand grew into a giant fireball the size of an adult man.

It didn’t stop there, it continued to grow even more…….and landed in the center of a group of Slimes with a loud roar.

A fierce explosion of fire broke out as it raised a pillar of fire that almost reached the heavens themselves.

The swarm of Slimes that should have contained about one hundred monsters was wiped out in an instant.

「W-Wha…… What…… What the hell was that all about!?」

「N-Nyah!? The Slimes were all done for in an instant!?」

While Kanade and I were both stunned, Tanya nodded with a satisfied look on her face.

「Fufu, I knew it.」

「Tanya, do you have any idea what happened just now!?」

「Rein, you signed a contract with Kanade, and as a result of that you have received a boost to your physical abilities, a staple of the Cat Spirit Tribe, correct? Then…… When you signed a contract with me, a Dragon, what do you think you would get in return?」

「Ah!」

「The correct answer here is this: the Magical Power of the Dragon Tribe. You know that the Dragon Tribe does not only possess high physical power, but also possesses strong magical powers as well, right? We can fly, create fireballs, and spit out fire breath, we use our magical power to make up for that we might be lacking. It is said that the Dragon Tribe possesses the second highest Magic Power among the Ultimate Species. That very same Magic Power of the Dragon Tribe is now in your hands, Rein.」

「Seriously….!?」

「Really now……?」

Not only did I get the power of the Cat Spirit Tribes, but also the Magic Power of the Dragon Tribe to boot……

There’s so much going on that my perception of reality was having trouble with keeping up.

Before last time, I was just a hapless Beast Tamer who was just freshly kicked out of the Hero’s Party……

Honestly, it all felt so unrealistic that for a moment out there I thought I was dreaming.

「And that’s the end of my explanation. So, let’s talk about the details later while we collect the Magic Stones from those Slimes.」

「Nyah! There’s still some slime left!」

「Oh my.」

More Slimes appeared from the back woods.

The information that we had only mentioned about one hundred of them.

Could it be that they have been splitting up by the time we get there, and their population has grown even more?

Either way, these guys need to be cleaned up, too. Otherwise there is going to be a whole lot of trouble.

「Well, isn’t that just perfect? We can use those guys as moving target practice for Rein to train his magic.」

「Huh? What do you mean?」

「Rain, you’ve got the magic power of the Dragon Tribe now, but it seems that you still can’t control it all too well. Magic is so much harder to control than the physical aspects of one’s body, after all. If you don’t practice a little bit whenever you can, you’ll only get hurt later, isn’t that right?」

「Come on, Rein, do your best~♪!」

「It’s all good and all, but guys…… I think that my train of thoughts is still a bit numb, from all that information, and……」

「Please get a grip for now. You are our Master, after all. Please, at least try to act the part.」

「Y-Yeah, I guess I should…… I really need to get a proper grip.」.

So that I won’t have to feel embarrassed by standing right next to the both of them!

I have to grow stronger! Way stronger than I am now!

「Can you please teach me how to use my Magic?」

「All right. Since you are asking so nicely, I am going to play along.」

「J-Just please go easy on me, would you?」

「You can do it, you can do it, R-E-I-N~♪! Don’t you lose, don’t you lose, R-E-I-N~♪!」

While being cheered on by Kanade so much……

I started to clean up after the rest of the Slimes while gradually learning how to control my Magic Power.

…… As expected, Tanya’s teaching method was truly Spartan.

So tough.

But thanks to that, I was able to control my Magic Power to at least some extent.

I’m really grateful for that.
