CHAPTER 34: THE SHADOW KNIGHT BATTLE PART 1

「…… There it is!」

After making some progress through the forest, we came to a stop.

I found myself a squirrel, assimilated with it and used its body to scout ahead, thus being able to discover the Shadow Knight’s location.

Judging by my eyes alone, he seemed to be at least three meters tall?

The closest analogy that I could find to describe that creature was that it looked like a huge knight wearing a jet-black armor.

However, there was no face in the place where the face would usually be on the head. Instead, there was a mass of deep and swirling darkness, and a pair of blood-red glowing eyes shining eerily in the middle of it.

In his hands, it was holding onto a large, ridiculously oversized sword.

That was all that I was able to visually confirm, at the very least.

There was also a little piece of useful intel: since it was completely resistant to all kinds of magic, the Shadow Knight was naturally unable to use magic of its own.

So if we were really going to fight it, our best bet here would be to keep our distance and attack it while making it unable to approach us.

「Now to look for Sora’s sister…… Ah! There she is!」.

The area where the Shadow Knight was located was an open plaza, as if it had been partially cleared for some reason.

The Shadow Knight was in the center of that square.

Behind it I could see a girl from the Spirit Tribe with her limbs tied to the trees by some rusty chains.

I was sure it was actually Sora’s sister.

Just like that, I got all the information I needed.

I returned to Kanade and Tanya and released the assimilation technique.

「…… Phew.」

「Welcome home, Rein♪」

「So, how did it go?　How about Sora’s sister?　Where’s the Shadow Knight?」

「There’s a little clearing about three hundred meters from here. Sora’s sister and Shadow Knight are both there.」

I then shared all the information that I managed to obtain with Kanade and Tanya.

「Tying someone up with chains! That’s absolutely unforgivable!」

「This cannot do. This cannot do at all. Anyone who does not know how to treat girls with respect is in for a good spanking.」

「Here’s the plan: Kanade and I will run into the Shadow Knight and distract it. In the meantime, Tanya is going to rescue Sora’s sister.」

「And why am I the only one who cannot get the piece of the action for myself?」

「That’s because your fireballs and breaths are all generated by magic, Tanya, so you are not the ideal matchup against an opponent such as Shadow Knight.」

「You know that those are not the only things I have in my arsenal, right?」

「Yes, I know. But I trust you, Tanya and I recognize your power. That’s why I’m asking you to save the most important hostage here at the current moment. We’re not very good at applying our skills on the fly, because we specialize in physical attacks most of the time. In that respect, I can trust you that you are going to get the hostage out and bring her to safety, so that we can focus solely on fighting.」

「Hmph…… W-Well, I mean, if you say something like that to me, I guess that I have no choice but to meet those expectations of yours.」

「Hehe, just admit it, Tanya. It makes you really happy that Rein is counting on you with something so important, nya.」

「Oh, just shut up! Stop saying something so unnecessary!」

We moved closer to the edge of the Shadow Knight’s sensing range and took our positions in the appropriate places, respectively.

I then turned towards Kanade, asking her in a hushed voice:

「Are you ready to go?」

「Yes, I’m ready!」

「Alright. So, on the count of three. One…… Two…… Three……!!!」

Muttering those words in a slightly louder voice, on the count of three Kanade and I ran out of our hiding place as fast as we possibly could.

「First to the goal, nyaaahhh!!!」’

「Wha…… Gyaaahhh!!!」

Even though I had gained the power of the Cat Spirit Tribe, Kanade was still far superior to me in terms of pure and raw physical ability.

Kanade, who had managed to reach the enemy first, carried the momentum of her run through into her fist and struck the Shadow Knight’s abdomen with all of her might.

The Shadow Knight folded its huge body into a figure of a “ku” character.

「And here we go! Yet another blow!」

「Guah!?」

She then kicked the ground and leapt upwards at an angle.

As she was, she shot the Shadow Knight in the face with her knee.

「Guoooaah!? W-Who the hell are you guys!?」

「The enemy! That’s who!」

Kanade struck another blow at the Shadow Knight, who was spouting something truly unnecessary and unfit of the situation.

「Or you can call us the allies of justice!」

Kanade then spun around and readied another kick to be blown into the Shadow Knight’s body.

While spinning around at high speed, the Shadow Knight was struck with a flurry of kicks one after another to its jet-black armor.

「Guh…… C-Could it be…… Are you that blasted Hero!?」

「Don’t lump us……」

「…… Together with a guy like that!」

Kanade and I breathed together in perfect sync and hit the Shadow Knight at the same time.

Its giant body was easily blown away.

Its jet-black armor cracked and something like black mist poured out of the cracks.

「Damn you! Damn you, damn you, damn you DAMN YOUUUUUU!!!!!! Damn those blasted Spirit Tribe bastards! They knew that they could not handle me, so they resolved to send someone else to do their dirty job for them, huh!? I am going to kill you both! But first, I am going to kill that little shit’s little sister!」

「Oh, that’s cute. You really think I would let you do that? With me around?」

「Guah!?」

What followed here was an explosion.

The Shadow Knight was engulfed in flames.

Behind him was Tanya who had safely managed to rescue Sora’s younger sister.

With one hand, she would focus her efforts on defending Sora’s younger sister, and with the other hand she would continue to throw fireball after fireball in the Shadow Knight’s direction.

「Damn it! So, there was yet another rat scurrying somewhere out there in the shadows, huh!?」

「Well, excuse you! I am not a rat! I am a Dragon, just to let you know!」

In addition to her barrage of fireballs, Tanya would add some additional Dragon Breaths attacks to the mix.

However, although the Shadow Knight would certainly stumble under the pressure of the breath attacks, no damage seems to have been inflicted onto it, as we might have expected.

「Did you really think that those attacks would be able to do anything to me!? Attacks of this level are a mere child’s play to me!」
