CHAPTER 36: AND THUS, THE HERO IS…… PART 1
Now that we have completed our business in the Lost Forest, we were ready to return to Horizon.
Including the time needed to arrive at the Lost Forest and come back from it, the entire escapade took us a total of two days.
I guess it could be said that we managed to get this job done rather quickly.
After coming back to town, we went to the inn where Arios and the others were staying and asked at the front desk in which room they were currently staying.
「Oh hey, Rein! Back so soon? What’s the meaning of this? Oh! Don’t tell me…… Have you already given up on the idea of capturing the Lost Forest? You have, haven’t you?」
「Actually, it’s the opposite of that. We have done what you asked of us, and the quest is over.」
「…… Huh?」
「Here it is. Your precious Shield of Truth.」
I said while taking the Shield of Truth out of my luggage bag and I handed it to Arios.
「N-No way! There is just no way that it’s the real deal! A-Are you saying that you actually managed to conquer the Lost Forest!? In two days!? That’s just absurd, no matter how you want to look at it…… No, could it be…… You’re not trying to weasel your way out of the request, right!? By preparing some high quality fake that you wanted to hand to us!?」
「As if I would ever do something so stupid. If you have your doubts about the Shield, how about you examine it all you want by yourselves?」
As I suggested that idea, Arios began to examine the Shield of Truth in greater detail.
First he equipped it, then he meticulously checked both its front and back, and then he even tried using Appraisal Magic on it.
It seems that he was really skeptical about this.
No matter how you look at it, there would be hardly any point in us preparing the fake Shield of Truth, if something like that could even be accomplished.
However, I guess that Arios was not going to trust me so easily on this, kind of how I would no longer be able to bring myself to trust neither him nor his Party members ever again.
When I thought about it for a while, it was the kind of logic that made the most sense at the moment.
「Certainly…… It looks like this IS the real deal.」
「Right?」
「Hmph. S-So, even someone like you can actually pull off taking care of a basic errand like that every once in a while, huh?」
「Nyaah…… How rude. And you didn’t even say thank you yet!」
「Not to mention apologizing for suspecting that the Shield of Truth was a fake!」
「So, is this how the Hero is like……?」
Once we got that business out of the way, I could hear my companions whispering about Arios and his group behind my back.
It would seem that Arios managed to make a rather poor first impression in the eyes of both Sora and Luna, as their faces looked rather grim.
「Is he looking for a fight? Or does he want to take this one outside? Sure thing, I can throw hands with the Hero, no problem!」
「Nyaah! Yes! I agree! Let him have it!」
「Both of you, calm down, why don’t you?」
The four people behind me were having a tumultuous conversation right now, and I felt like it was on me to stop them for the time being, before things would needlessly escalate.
「Oh? And who might those two be? I have never seen them around here before, but……」
「No need to concern yourself with them.」
Sora and Luna had used their Illusion magic and cast it on the wings growing out of their backs, so that they were completely invisible to those around them. hallucinogenic magic and the wings on their backs are invisible.
The reason for that was that we thought that if the general public came to know that the two of them were Spirit Tribe, there would be a whole lot of trouble because of that.
Kanade and Tanya are rare individuals as well, but they are of the kinds that you would occasionally see in human settlements, so they were not THAT out of the ordinary, even though they were Cat Spirit Tribe and Dragon Tribe.
But if a Spirit Tribe that had cut off contact with humanity for more than two hundred years suddenly was to make an appearance, it would only give birth to all sorts of nasty rumors.
Not to mention that there could be those who would seek to do harm to them.
It might be somewhat inconvenient for them, but for the sake of their and our peace, we needed to have them do this in the city’s limits and all the other places where people could be watching us.
「So, what about our reward?」
「My, oh my. Look at you. Cutting to the chase and bringing money so soon.」
「Well of course. You wouldn’t think that I would ever work for you for free, would you?」
「You certainly learned how to yap that mouth of yours nowadays…… Here, take it.」
「Mind if I confirm the amount first?」
「Do whatever the hell you want.」
I opened the leather bag I received from Arios and checked its contents meticulously.
Inside of it, there were twenty gold coins, as promised.
So at least that matter was settled.
「Just as we agreed beforehand. Hope that you have no problem with that?」
「There is the possibility of the coins actually being fakes…… Oh well, I can’t be that paranoid. So yes, no problem. A deal was a deal, after all.」
And with that, the request was officially completed.
This also means that we were pretty much done here.
So with that thing being taken care of, we could finally be on our way.
With that, I turned my back on Arios and started to walk away……
「Wait, Rein.」
Aggath, who had been watching the conversation in complete silence until just now, stopped me all of a sudden.
I turned around to face him, thinking that it wouldn’t be very wise to just downright ignore him like that.
「What is it?」
「Would you like to actually come back to the Party?」
Aggath’s words came completely out of left field for me, and I couldn’t help it but to actually open my eyes wide in surprise upon hearing them.
However, apparently I was not the only one who was shocked by that proposition. Apparently, Arios looked as shocked as I was, if not even more.
「Hey, Aggath! What the hell are you talking about!? I haven’t heard anything about bringing Rein back to the Party! And I certainly did not authorize such a thing!」
「It’s something I have decided on at my own discretion. You may have a lot of thoughts on this subject, Arios, but I’m afraid you’ll have to let me handle this one for the time being.」
