CHAPTER 40: BATHING PART 1

Even though the mine owned by Ganz-san was close to the city, we had to be prepared to walk for a while and explore inside of the mountain.

The weather in the mountains is highly changeable and could deteriorate rapidly.

There is also a risk of getting stuck on our way there, so careful preparation was in order here.

So we took an extra day to make sure that we are absolutely prepared for every eventuality.

The next day.

We set foot onto the terrain surrounding the mountain that Ganz-san owned.

「Nyan, nyan, nya~n♪! Nyan, nyan, nya~n♪! Nyan, nyan, nya~n♪!」

Kanade, walking in the lead as always, was humming an unfamiliar tune while being in seemingly high spirits.

She has done something similar before, but I wonder if she just likes to sing in general?

「Hey Kanade? Can you stop singing for a moment? It’s really distracting, in case you haven’t realized that!」

「Nya, nyah? O-Oh, r-right, I’m sorry. It’s just that…… the hike was so fun to me that I just couldn’t help myself but to start singing.」

「Well, at the very least I can kind of understand where exactly you are coming from with this.」

「Right? Isn’t that right? It is, isn’t it? And the hike is even more enjoyable since we are all doing this together~♪」

「See, I know that it is important to have fun, but please do not forget that this is all part of the request that we have officially accepted. So we must be ready at all times.」

「I know, I know! I haven’t forgotten about that, don’t you worry! But still, no matter if this is a part of the job or not, I think that it is important to have fun at times like this!」

「That attitude is very much like you, Kanade.」

「I know, right?」

Both Tanya and I chuckled slightly after saying that.

Being able to enjoy things at any time might be a talent that is Kanade’s greatest strength and staple trademark at the same time.

「Huaah…… Fuuah……」’

On the other hand, both Sora and Luna were visibly dragging behind, unable to keep up with the rest of the party.

We weren’t even walking for that long, but for some reason both of them seemed to be out of breath and breathing heavily.

「Are you guys okay back there?」

「Y-Yes, we are okay, it’s not really all that big of a deal…… or anything like that……」

「M-My beloved sister…… Don’t you think that…… there are limits to putting up a front…… in front of everyone…… As for me…… I’m already at my limits…… I feel like I’m…… I’m dying over here……」

Certainly, both of them seemed to be having quite a bit of a hard time keeping up with us, and they were also sweating quite a lot.

「Could it be that…… you girls are not feeling well?」

「No, that’s not what the problem is here. We are both perfectly fine and healthy.」

「We are the members of the Ultimate Species, after all…… And as such, the Ultimate Species seldom get seriously sick, no matter the cause. Ultimate bodies and ultimate immune systems and all that…… Fufun! Pretty amazing, right?」

「H-However, we the Spirit Tribe have been reclusive for as long as we can remember…… That, and the fact that we mainly specialize in Magic Power…… Hahhh, hyiiih…… means that we do not hold that much physical power or stamina in the first place……」

「A-As you would expect from a shut-in race such as our own…… Haaah, fuuh……」

「H-How much longer…… until…… Haah, haah…… do you think we’ll be able to reach our destination?」

「Hmm, let me think…… I think that we’ll be able to get there in an hour or so.」

「「…… O-ONE HOUR……!?」」

Sora and Luna whined together while the look of utter terror and desperation clouded their faces.

As expected of twin sisters, I should say. Even the way in which they reacted to things was almost exactly identical.

And even in a difficult situation like this one, they were sure to be staying perfectly in sync.

「Come on, you can do it.」

I then held out my hand towards the two of them.

「Hm? Your hand? What for?」

「I will help you trek that remaining distance. Besides, soon enough we are going to arrive at a good spot where we will be able to take a short break, so hang in there until then, alright?」

「O-Oh? Is that so? Thank you.」

「I mean, if you are willing to lend us your hands, then how about giving us both a piggyback ride? It would be way more efficient that way, now would it?」

「Normally I could agree, but unfortunately I only have one back, you see.」

「No problem! Rein just has to carry Sora on his back, and Sora is going to carry me on her back! Problem solved!」

「How could you possibly arrive at a solution like that? Besides, wouldn’t that make us look like a parent tortoise carrying a baby tortoise on top of its shell?」

「Besides, wouldn’t that also be pretty dangerous for Sora? And I don’t think it would also work the other way around, not with those slender arms of yours.」

「Oh yeah, you’re right. After all, Sora is WAY too heavy for me to be able to support her.」

「I-I don’t think that I am THAT heavy, mind you!」

As a result of this conversation, I was walking with the Spirit Tribe twins in tow for the next ten minutes or so.

Before long, the trees opened up and we came to a small clearing.

From the remains of the campfire that we could see, it was likely that this was the spot where many other Adventurers had camped before.

We could also see that there was a small lake behind the tree line as well.

「Alright, let’s take a break here for a while, shall we?」

I called out to everyone and put my bags on the ground, getting ready to take a break.

I was a little tired too from all the walking that we had done so far, especially that I had brought with me enough provisions and supplies so that they would last us for possibly two days and two nights.

Now that I think about it, I should have just found a suitable large animal and tame it, asking for its help with carrying around our luggage. It would have made things that much easier.

「Haah…… Haah…… Fuuh, man, I’m so tired…… I knew it, Spirit Tribe is not suited for any sort of outdoor or physical activity in general. Not at all.」

「That’s because you are just heavy, sister dearest. Under your own weight, I guess that you must be way more tired than I actually am.」

「Like I said, I am NOT heavy!」

Sora and Luna still looked tired, but were surprisingly energetic and had the energy to bicker with one another. Not to mention that they were making quite a bit of noise while they were at it.
