Beast Tamer Who Got Kicked Out From the Hero’s Party Chapter 47 Part 1
CHAPTER 47: TAKING A STROLL PART 1
「Hello.」
「Oh, Shroud-san. Hello to you, too.」
As I stepped into the Guild first thing in the morning, Natalie-san gave me a bright smile.
Yes, it was truly a bright smile. Like a flash of bright light, or like the radiance of the sun itself.
「How can I help you today? Do you perhaps have a new commission that you would like to undertake?」
「Oh, no, it’s nothing like that. Thing is, I am going to take the next week off and have a short break, so I won’t be coming here to take any kinds of requests or commissions. I just came here today to see what happened to the guys I handed over to you just the other day.」
「Oh, you’re talking about the Personal Request that you received from Gantz-san, correct? As far as the perpetrators are concerned, they will be stripped of their status as Adventurers. Additionally, they will be stripped of their citizenship as well. This pretty much makes them nothing more but slaves, with very little use to society. It was then decided that they would be transported to the Royal Capital and dealt with accordingly there.」
「Slaves…… I can see that their punishment is really severe, wouldn’t you agree?」
「Yes, that’s right. Not only did they undermine the status and good name of all Adventurers out there, but they were also stealing. And there is also the use of force against you, Shroud-san. Illegal breeding of demons, illegal occupation of private mine, and many other extra crimes to boot. But overall, those people should be thinking of themselves as lucky. Normally, under those circumstances what would await them would be a straight up death sentence.」
I see. So for all of their transgressions, a sort of “No mercy” policy had to be employed.
Oh well, if Natalie-san says that they have also committed other crimes, the ones that I am not even aware of, then I guess it is something that just cannot be helped.
Either way, it’s a good thing that I know that they were accordingly dealt with.
For a moment out there I thought that they might have actually broken out of prison and try to assault Gantz-san out of revenge, or something even worse than that……
But fortunately I can see that those fears of mine were baseless and unfounded.
「Oh, by the way, Shroud-san?」
「Yes? What is it?」
「I have been meaning to ask you this, but…… Who are those two?」
Natalie-san’s gaze turned somewhere behind me.
The ones who were standing behind me were……
「Hello. My name is Sora. You can call me Sora.」
「And I’m Luna! It’s nice to meet you, and all that jazz! Fuhuahuaha!」
The Spirit Tribe twins, Sora and Luna.
When I told them I was going to the Guild, they followed me as they were interested to see just what kind of a place it was.
By the way, Kanade and Tanya are still sleeping back at the inn.
「Huh…… Nice to meet you, too. My name is Natalie and I’m the Receptionist here at this Adventurers’ Guild.」
Natalie-san looked strangely bemused, as if she was having trouble with being carried by the momentum that the twin sisters were creating with their sheer presence.
However, that expression of hers only lasted for a short while.
Because it soon changed into the one of someone who was asking the questions, probing their conversation partner for answers.
「…… Could it be that you two are also in Shroud-san’s party?」
「Yes, that we are.」
「Umu! Luna and Rein are soul-bound friends, you could say!」
「Adding even more pretty girls to his entourage, huh……?」
I don’t know why, but for a moment out there Natalie-san seemed to have looked at me with a strange kind of resentment.
「Hm? Is there something wrong, Natalie-san?」
「No, it’s nothing, really. ABSOLUTELY. NOTHING. AT ALL.」
「Y-Yeah? I…… Is that so?」
For some strange reason, I could feel that Natalie-san was in a really bad mood.
But why? I mean, I didn’t do anything to make her feel that way, did I?
Yeah, I really cannot understand what is going on here…… The heart of a woman is something the intricacies of which are way too complicated for me to properly understand.
***
「Mmmnnn…… Oh yeah! The warm sunshine feels so nice!」
「Hmm, yes. It really is the perfect day for a walk, I suppose.」
After we exited the Adventurers’ Guild……
Since the weather was good today and neither one of our three wanted to go back to the inn for the time being, I decided that we might as well go for a nice stroll through town together with Sora and Luna.
And just like that, the three of us walked through the town while walking side by side.
「So this is what a human city feels like…… Hmm. It’s really interesting, I must say.」
「Really now? Personally, I don’t think it’s all that interesting.」
「…… Did you already forget, Rein? Both Sora and I haven’t interacted with humans for over two hundred years. Same with the rest of our people. Our knowledge of humans is two hundred years old, so it’s very interesting to be exposed to the culture of today because it’s all new and fresh to us.
「Hmm…… I see. I think I get it. I guess that’s true.」
Sora and Luna were both scurrying around with great interest.
It’s like they were just two girls from the countryside, on their very first excursion into the big city.
So I guess that in this setting I would be their guardian, huh?
「I can see that the standard of living hasn’t improved nearly as much…… Of course, there has been some progress compared to two hundred years ago…… but still…… Hmm?」
「I think it’s to be expected. After all, for the past two hundred years humanity have been in quite a few wars.」
「Wars? What kind of wars?」
「Mostly the Humans-Demons wars. The Demon Lord waged war on humans, his demons followed suit, and monsters followed after demons…… Then humanity retaliated and invaded the demon realm…… It’s been a constant back and forth for almost two hundred years now. Normally those were single battles or skirmishes, but sometimes they would even escalate into an all-out armed conflict that would involve the world in its entirety. Maybe that’s why that kind of thing has happened so many times and that’s why civilization hasn’t developed very well, even after all this time.」
I have heard that some people share a rather radical belief that it is war that advances civilization forward, but……
History has proven time and time again that this approach was nothing more but a mistake.
It is only one aspect of war, I suppose. When war is waged, many technologies improve as a result of that.
For example, military power and various inventions supporting the war efforts.
Military power, which is essential for war efforts, expands the more wars are fought.
For example, advanced technology allows more mobility.
